Chapter 2: PROGRAM PRODUCTION CENTRE

Director: Vo Quoc Thanh Deputy Director: Tran Chan Uy Deputy Director: Nguyen Chi Hoai 1. Structure: 5 crews: 1.1. Editorial Crew: Its commander is Mr. Tran Chan Uy. This crew undertakes news report and other programs. Their jobs are to edit, rectify and censor programs done by other departments. 1.2. Displaying Crew: Nguyen Minh Duc is the commander. People who work here often go outside to film. 1.3. Technique Crew: The commander is Nguyen Hai Dang. 1.4. Accounting Crew: Its commander is Dang Thi My Hong. 1.5. Satellite Crew: It is commanded by Thi Thi Ngoc Phuong. I had taken my internship here. Being a section of Program Production Centre, its duty is to exploit programs including: International News, Animal Planet, National Geographic, sports, cartoons, circus, Nature and Science. They exploit these programs from International Satellite. People who work here are all female translators. They record programs on Satellite then watch and translate them from English, French, Chinese, and Russian into Vietnamese.

Each translator has their own working desk with a television, a video player and a head phones. Some translators who do the International News have computers connected with the Internet. In this section, it is normal to ask the other more experienced colleagues for help. They often help each other to finish their works. This shows their solidarity in working. 2. Strengths and challenge: 2.1 Strengths: It has a personnel staff with capacity, experience, enthusiasm and passion in their jobs. They are all hard working and many of them even go to work on their days of rest. People working here often take some training courses so that they can update the knowledge in their fields that ensures effectiveness in working. The station always makes favorable conditions and provides sufficient modern equipments for workers in the section. 2.2 Challenge: The number of programs that they can exploit from the international satellite is limited because of program copyrights. The expense of buying these programs is so high and they cannot afford. It will be more difficult for them in the future when the number of programs having copyrights is increasing.

Chapter 3: MY JOB DESCRIPTION

When I took the internship there, I did two kinds of programs: 1. International News:
a. How an International News program is made:

Each program includes from nine to ten pieces of news. International News programs are broadcasted two times a day. One is at 10.50 am and another is at 8 pm. The translators must go to the office early in the morning then watch and record news on ABC, BBC or CNN channels. Next, they will choose the typical news among a day and translate them into Vietnamese. After that, the translators will type then print the news out. The translated news will go to the Editorial Crew. People working in this crew will edit the news. Then Mr. Tran Chan Uy, the Deputy Director of the Program Production Centre and the commander of this crew, signs his name on the translated text. Mr. Ho Hong Son also gives his signature on it. Last, the translated text and the recorded video will go to the Technique Crew. The program is completed here before it is broadcasted on TV.
b. My work:

I had worked as a translator though the news video is already recorded. I had done four pieces of news: three from BBC channel and one from ABC channel. The news in the video were rather long, I didnt have to translate all the information but just the important ones so that viewers could catch the main things that we want to convey through the news.

My problem:

10

The speakers often delivered the news very fast; I sometimes even didnt understand what they said. At that time, I needed to watch it again and again. Because they spoke so fast so I was not sure that the information that I got was true or not. I had used the Internet to solve this kind of problem. I can check the accuracy of the information I heard by searching on the Internet. 2. Nature and Science: I had done a program named Wolf attacks on Nature and Science. Doing this program took most of my time. Every day, I went to the office, put on my headphones, listened and wrote down every word that I heard until I got all. Then I translated it. When doing this kind of program, the translators duties are just like when they do the International News. The biggest difference here is that they have to listen and translate exactly every word, every sentence being said in the video. It is very difficult and it is also my problem. I had to listen sentence by sentence and listened for many times. There were several new words that I didnt know. So I listened to them very carefully then I looked up in the dictionary to find out the new words. However, there were still some words that even I had listened for many times and I had looked up in the dictionary, I couldnt find them. The last way I could do was to ask for my supervisors help. She will listen and help me find these words. She was more experienced and was familiar with these words; it would be easy for her to get it. Chapter 4: INTERNSHIP SUMMARY

11

1. Good practice: I have obtained many benefits from my internship at Khanh Hoa Radio and Television Station. This was a good opportunity for me to gain experience in translation field. I had worked as a real translator and not just a student. I acquired many new skills and developed many already existing skills including translating skill, listening skill, and communicating skill. Of these skills, the most worth-saying is listening one. I had listened most of my time and I could listen as much as I can. So that I had improved my listening ability a lot. Besides, working in such full of updated news environment also helped me improve my knowledge. I could know most of the current events happened around the world during that time. In addition, it was a chance for me to get used to the working environment that I might be in the future. I could know how the work of a translator in such position is. 2. Short comings: One thing that I feel regret is that the internship period was rather short so I could not try in other programs such as cartoons, sports, national geographic, circus which the other translators in this section could do. One disadvantage that I had to face was that I could not do my job without a video player. However, each translator have their own one, there was only one spare video player which the translator being on pass left for us. We had four people who took the internship at the same time there. So we had to share it and took advantage of the other translator days of rest to do our jobs. That was why the amount of programs I did was not much.

3. Future orientation:

12

In future, I will continue maintaining the improvement of the skills that I had got during my internship period. The main thing I should do is to continue to practice translating everyday. I will also practice listening through the tape or by watching cable TV. One thing that I should not forget is to read books and search information on the Internet to update information and to improve my knowledge as well.

EVALUATION
1. Self-evaluation:

During my internship period, I had worked very hard; I even went to the office on the weekend. I had taken many efforts to do my job and to solve problems generating unexpectedly. I also took much time to translate the program Wolf attacks carefully. Lastly, I feel satisfied with what I had done. 2. Supervisors evaluation:

WOLF ATTACKS

The attack took place early in 2008 in a county of Balikun, east of TianShan Mountain in Xinjiang. Visitors to herdsmans house where the attack had occurred were shocked by what they saw, the body of calculus sheep lying around killed by wolves. On January 15th, 2008 we came to the place where the wolves attack had occurred. Balikun County is located east of the TianShan Mountain range where its very cold in winter. January is the coldest time on the year. The next day, Nature and Science drove to Kuisu Town, 30 km away from the county seat. It snowed the whole way but we eventually arrived then found TianRongHong, the correspondent who reported the wolf attack. TianRongHong; Public Secretary, Kuisu Town, Balikun County: After learning a little more about what had happened, we set out with Mr.Li, the town head, and Mr.Ha, another town head in charge of animal husbandry. Around 9 oclock, we arrived at the herdsmans home. I was shocked by the sight that greeted me when I arrived. There were so many sheep that had been killed by wolves. I had never seen a real wolf before, although I had certainly heard about them. As our request, Tian took us to the settlement of the herdsman in question. The place is over 20 km from the town seat. The heavy snow and the strong wind so it took us more than an hour to reach the village. Lets have a look, TianRongHong.

17

The home of HuSaYin, the herdsman who had been attacked by the wolves looked no difference than any other farm house, but upon entering the house, it would be easy to see that this was a home of a Kazak. Recalling the horrible night, it would be easy to see that HuSaYin still felt very much afraid. HuSaYin:I saw 1 or 2 injured sheep could hardly stand up. They were bleeding from various wound and it seemed quite clear that they were victims of a wolf attack. We tried to understand HuSaYin accented Chinese. What seemed clear though was that on November 10th, the herdsman drove the herds out and by midnight they decided to take a rest. Wolves are nocturnal animals. They could the herdsman completely by surprise. Liugou village is not the first place where wolves had attacked. HuSaYins herds were attacked by wolves at the wintry pasture on North Mount which is nearly 30 km away from the village. Not wound after the last wolf attack, HuSaYin moved down hill into the village. HuSaYin, where do you stay for winter? Just in that mountain. Now there are wolves there and we dare not stay any longer. We moved away out of fear of them. Its hard to calculate how many wolves there are in the mountains. Some say there are about a dozen and some say over 20. Now the herdsmen often run into wolves in packs of 3 or 4. They typically attack the livestock. HaYiDo, a deputy head of Kuisu Town Government in charge of animal husbandry showed us a report on wolves attacks which indicated that in the months of November

18

and December 2007 alone, livestock get the wintry pastures on the North Mount were attacked about a dozen times with 183 sheep being killed. According to incomplete statistics, during winter, nearly 1,000 domestic animals, large and small, were killed by the wolves. However, Balikun County is not the only place affected by wolves attacks. YuanGuoYing, President, Xinjiang Ecological Association: There was an investigation done which shows that just in Wensu County; nearly 10,000 domestic animals have been killed by wolves. Its so surprising that just in 1 county; almost 10,000 live stocks had been killed by wolve in the winter. The frequent wolf attacks around Xinjiang indicate that there are quite a few wolves packs active in Xinjiang right now. From interviews, we also got to know a shocking fact: only 7 wolves took part in the attacks reported in Balikun County but they killed 97 sheep from which on can get a rough idea of how efficient they are. What is more appalling in such a killing spree is not the most serious. YuanGuoYing:There are some statistics. Recently, a pack of wolves rushed into a herd and killed some 20 or 30 sheep. This is just normal. In 1 attack, 90 were killed, and in another, 190 killed. According to folklore, wolves enjoy drinking blood and foreign legends, vampires are even depicted of having a wolf head. But this has not been scientifically verified. JiangRong, the author of Wolf Token believes that wolves are very intelligent animals. They hunt and kill more frequently in winter so to save food, for they know that food doesnt go bad in the cold weather. This theory has yet though to be proven.

19

YuanGuoYing: They are unlike snow leopards or grizzly bears, which attack a herd but are content killing just 1 or 2 sheep and pulling them away. Some other people even believe that because human beings has been continued with the extending pastures to raise more sheep that intruding on the habitats of the wolves. They are acting out of revenge. In the months of December and January, wolvesre going to heat. They flock together to form large groups. Only a few dominant male and female wolves can mate freely while most of the others dont have the right to reproduce. Moreover, the snow seals the mountain passim and food is scarce so the livestocks on the pastures becom a natural choice for the wolves. YuanGuoYing: Its just their nature. Very strange indeed. They certainly pose a serious threat to animal husbandry. No matter what the reasons, in the vast western wilderness, this winter has witnessed a more cruel disaster than simple extreme weather. During mid January, people are busy celebrating the ice and snow festival in Balikun County. The whole county seat becomes quiet and serene. Even in Xinjiang, it has been a long time since people last heard about wolves. PengXingLi, Former Head, Balikun Administrative Office of Cultural Relics: Since the 1960s, we have been hearing less and less about wolf attacks. Why have the wolves extinct for nearly a half century suddenly reappeared in groups? MengYuQiang, Director, Hami Region Forestry Bureau:

20

I think the 1st reason is that the society now has a stronger desire to promote the protection of wild animals. Everyone is paying attention to it. The second reason is that we are stepping up protective measures for such animals. Our forestry police and laws enforcement teams have been severely cracking down on poaching. As the predator at the upper end of the food chain, the wolves had no natural enemy in China Wild West except the grizzly bears and the snow leopards both have smaller in number now. In Xinjiang, there is even special some snow leopards weve never seen them. YuanGuoYing: Since the 1980s, there has been a state policy of confiscating personal weapons. The work has been so thorough that all shotguns and small-caliber rifles have virtually disappeared. At the Balikun Public Security Bureau, the policemen showed us the guns and ammunitions the had collected over the past years. ChenXueJun, Captain, Public Security Corps, Balikun Public Security Bureau: Since we implemented various violence-control measures and banned guncollecting, we have been collecting heavy-caliber shotguns and this kind of tranquilizer guns used on breeding farms; there are also obsolete signal guns like these. Among the firearms and ammunitions collected by Balikun Public Security Bureau, therere even tranquilizer guns and signal guns. In China Western Regions, human are the last natural enemy of the wolves. Now with the closing place to protect the wolves, human are less effectively on armed and the wolves have nothing to fear.

21

Winter is the season when food is hardest to combine. In the wiriness, hungry wolvesre scaring around in such afraid. The flock of sheep represents an easy target because they run so slowly and theyre not very quick quitted so the wolves have no hesitation in longing an attack. Early the next morning, Nature and Science drove to the scene of the attack by the wolves. Moring light bumped its way along winding mountain road. Our car drove this way of the mountain side and the right of the scene by noon. On the snow, there were traces left by the wolves and body parts of the dead sheep. How many sheep were killed? Altogether 24. Were you present when the wolves attacked the sheep? Tusubieke, Herdsman, Company III, Muye Village: Yes, I was. I just couldnt hold on. They got in 3 of them, from 3 directions. I drove 1 out, but another got back in. A lot of sheep were wounded. Arent wolves afraid of humans? No, they are not. Even we were too tired to walk any longer. Aint nothing can be done about that.

22

Tusubieke had driven the sheep there just 1 week before. Hes never expected that 3 wolves which suddenly rushed the herd in broad day light. The wolves hit the sheep fall on rush, within moment 24 sheep laid dead in a pool of blood. WangHaiYu, Commander, Company III, Muye Village, No.1 Hongxing Pasture The loss is big. Almost all the dead sheep were females. Most were pregnant. After the wolves attack, the herdsman skinned the 24 dead sheep to reduce their losses. Body parts of the dead sheep scattered all around. The heads of the dead sheep were piled up, some still with their eyes wide open. Tusubieke: They are all female sheep with lambs. Then the loss is great. We can do nothing about it either. We hope our government leaders can give us some solutions, telling us what to do before a wolf attack. Now we cant even graze safely. You cant stop them. They are not afraid of human beings any more. At the scene, Tusubieke kept grumbling telling us what the female sheep meant to the herdsman. One female sheep is equivalent to more than 2 since you have to include the future baby lambs to be born the next year and the year after. There is a proverb in the grassland, it goes something like this: A you lives today, a herd will run tomorrow. Another 5 km futher from the place of the wolf attack is the habitat of Tusubieke and his herd. It located at a small cold consisting of a small cabin for shepherd and a sheep pen surrounded by a low stone wall.

23

For the 3 months in winter, Tusubieke and his herd will stay here. Thinking of the unfortunate experience, Tusubieke is very sad: Now there are too many wolves. Its difficult to take the sheep out of graze, and we suffer a lot from the wolf attacks. The loss has become bigger and bigger year after year. Nowadays, the wolves are so fierce. Now, many other herdsmen are not willing to take their sheep out to graze. We have no guns or weapons to stop the wolves from attacking our sheep. They are just too fierce. Knowing the hardship of Tusubieke, the Hongxing Police station on the pasture set out the policeman to bring them double kicks- a kind of firecracker to keep the wolves away. BaHaGen, Policemen, Hongxing Police Station: Wolf attacks are bad in our area. However, we are not allowed to kill them because they are state-level protected animals. We now use firecracker to drive them away; and the herdsmen have their own trandition of making dummies or set up bonfires to protect their herds. A little while later, BaHaGen got to the hillock on the other side. They light the firecrackers to drive off the wolves. It said that wolves will stay away from the sound of guns and the smell of gunpowder. The wolf attack has left the herdsmen extremely busy this year. In the day, they dare not stay away from their herds. At night, they light fire or prop up dummies around the sheep pen to keep the wolves away. HuSaYin: In the night, we stay up and in the day, we take the sheep out to graze. For the whole day, we do nothing but look after the sheep.

24

The herdsmen dont have any weapons any more and the wolves are protected by laws. In the struggle with the wolves, the herdsmenre although very cautious in every aspect arranged the passive position. Tiekai, Head, Muye Village, Kuisu Town: The wolves have eaten our sheep. Thats it. But if we eat the wolves, its against the law. What should we do? According to Hasatihan, a Kazak writer from Balikun County, in the past, the herdsmen would take a nap on the grassland when sleepy. When they woke up, none of their sheep would be missing. MaKuan, Former Party Secretary, Saerqiaoke Township, Balikun County: At the founding of the Peoples Community, we have special Wolf Hunting Squads. There were 7 production corps in the Township, and each corps had one Wolf Hunting Squad. But without wolves, all kinds of other problems were arriving. One after another. YuanGuoYing: The wolf is a very important animal in the ecological system. As far as we know, it has some merit in controlling the number of herbivorous animals. Without wolves, Mongolian gazelles, marmots and rats will reproduce very quickly. They will eat up the grass and the grassland will become desert. Hasatihan, Kasak writer: If wolves go extinct, other animals, especially sheep, will get diseases. Therell be more mentally retarded sheep as well. With wolves, domestic animals will not catch so many diseases.

25

YuanGuoYing: Some old herdsmen even say that without wolves chasing the sheep, their meat (mutton) will not be as good. Wolves can naturally improve the ecological system on the grasslands; the animals which are full preys to wolves are usually those old, weak, psyco-disabled. This is conducive to the prevention of genetic degeneration and weakening among animal groups. But for most herdsmen, they cant see this logic. Spring comes again and the herdsmen are going search of the wolves lairs. They want to keep their numbers down by stealing the cubs. Its clearly not an ideal solution but there would appear to be no easy way for human beings and wolves to live together.
