Adoro, the band`s guitarist, stated in an interview that Buendia informed him that he was leaving the group through text message. He clarified that Buendia`s reason in the text message was he was graduating from the course thats why he need to be in a separate way. Unlike Adoro, Marasigan, insisted that he did not personally receive a message rather he first heard it from the news. After the lead singer left the band, other members tracked separate paths by joining and launching their own bands. The country was surprised when Ely Buendia announced that there will be a Reunion Concert for the loyal E-Heads fans. This concert intended not to earn money but as a thankful concert for still supporting the E-Heads songs. It took place last August 30, 2008 in Fort Santiago at Taguig Openfield. Unfortunately, the concert displeased the fans because Buendia was rushed to the hospital suffering hypokalemia and extreme stress due to the passing of her mother days before the concert. After five days, Buendia was released from the hospital. For the contentment of the fans, E-heads pursued for the continuation of the concert happened last March 7, 2009 at SM Mall of Asia Concert ground in Pasay City.

raserheads is the most popular and influential Filipino band of the 1990s. They are one of the rock bands who did their share in revitalizing OPM back in popular demand. The band is a successful music group formed by Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Marcus Adoro and Buddy Zabala. They are also credited for spearheading a second wave of Manila invasion, saving the sinking Philippine alternative rock band. From first line of the song which brought them to the center stage entitled Pare KO where it is stated Pare ko, meron akong problema,

attain success knowing that everyone in the team did his or her own part. Genuine success cant be totally credited to just one person. In this temporal world, everyone and everything contributes to all the good things happening around. Everything follows the rule of symbiosis. One more thing, isnt it fun and enriching to work with someone towards the fulfillment of the same dream? One of the worst feelings is to be alone and definitely, no sane person will like to be in such state.

In PULP MAGAZINE, the lead singer`s wife and manager Diane Ventura insisted the true scenario behind the controversy. She notified that the break-up started with miscommunication between the singer and the roadie who was assigned to take care of the transportation schedule of the E-heads resulting for the two to come up late in a gig resulting for the two to come up late in a gig. This incident caused for disappointment of the roadie and criticized the couple as unprofessional. The day after the performance, Buendia aper, left the band. Of course, their other mainstream songs include Alapaap, Toyang, Maling Akala, Ligaya, Para Sa Masa, Torpedo, With A Smile and many more. Arguably, their biggest hit would be the Ang Huling El Bimbo, in which its music video earned the band as the first Filipino artist to win in the 1997 MTV Asia Awards.

s a kid, I used to hear the saying that, Two heads are better than one. That its better to rely on another person in accomplishing things. Because by doing things together, more will be attained, taking in for consideration that everything is times two: the effort, inspiration and action. At a young age, my mom inculcated in me the value of teamwork and how it amazingly brings best results in any endeavor. As I grew older, the more I appreciated the idea of sharing your abilities and gifts with others. Not only does it shorten the way to achieving your goal but also tests your capacity to adjust with various human behaviors. Lets face it, no matter how noble or sincere our intentions are, there will still be oppositions that sometimes makes us blow our top. Thats life. But the essential lesson here is learning how to blend well with other people who share the same goal with you. Again the clich, No man is an island. True. Life is too short not to realize our need to co-exist with our fellow human beings. Sometimes, its our pride that hinders us from giving our share in the game. Especially if we know we have the ability to solve things alone. But we ought to remember that not all the time it works. There will always be an instance when well need assistance from other people. Its not really hard to cooperate. Yes, thats the magic word! Cooperation like faith can really move mountains. Especially these days when everything is fast-paced and everyones living a rat race whether youre a student, employee or even plain housewife, sharing our best gifts makes things done easier. It will surely be heart-warming to

In this requirement for Media and Literacy Studies subject, the unifying theme is teamwork. This is completely mirrored in the cover story involving the quintessential writer Ricky Lee. Even if hes the celebrated scriptwriter who worked for Himala, Moral, Jose Rizal or the Natatanging Gawad Urian for 2003, he was unpretentious to say about his hardships before when he willingly lent us time to interview him at Loyola Heights, Quezon City. He didnt try to upstage his answers. The result is just overwhelming. The same can also be said of the other two great interviews (and a rare chance also) we have: Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino member Rolando Tolentino and Rappler.com chief editor Marites Vitug. After all these years, theyre being looked up to in the industry as respected critics. Tolentino, being also the current dean of the UP-College of Mass Communication, and Vitug, who wrote the controversial book Shadow of Doubt: Probing the Supreme Court, proved that my thesis in making these interviews possible explored new material for next Journalism seniors who will soon make this final requirement. Lee, Tolentino, and Vitug. When these three luminaries merge forces, what can be expected but only the best? As a team, we feel we have the finest topics to offer. Turning through the pages is the sole proof. Enjoy reading folks!

PM Legend. Artist. Fighter. Family guy. Francis Michael Durango Magalona also known as Francis M. was an inspiration to Filipinos through his music. He was the first Filipino rapper known for combining rap with Pinoy Rock. He released the albums, Yo!, Rap is Francis M., Meron Akong Ano!, Happy Battle, and others. Most of his music criticized the common ills of the society and let people be aware of politics and its problems.

He started a clothing line , FrancisM Clothing Co. (FMCC) and a foundation with Ely Buendia (they were both having health problems in 2009) called Heartist Foundation, which aims to help Filipino artists with health and financial problems. After Francis Magalona was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, he and his wife used the album name, Happy Battle as a reference to his fight against cancer. Instead of getting the attention of the media because of it, he preferred privacy with his family. He was selfless for what he said, What Id rather talk about is how we can solicit blood donations to replace the supply that I have consumed in the hospital. Other people would not bother about how much blood they have consumed in the hospital as long as they live.

When I was a kid, I watched the television series, Bayani which features the heroes of our country. I heard Francis Ms song Mga Kababayan which I instantly liked because of its meaning: the pride of being a Filipino. It is the same for Tayoy Mga Pinoy. Although I only heard a He died due to multiple organ failure on March 6, part of it, I relate to the meaning of its lyrics. 2009. I would see him while watching television singing together with other artists like Joey Ayala, Heber Bartolome of Banyuhay, Ryan Cayabyab, Mike Hanopol of Juan Dela Cruz Band, Andrew E., Michael V., Death Threat, Eraserheads, Krazykyle, Gloc 9 and Parokya ni Edgar. Kaleidoscope World turned as one of his best singles when it won the 1996 Awit Award for Best Produced Record of the Year. I liked the song though I only remember this line, Every color, every hue, is represented by me and you... which for me means that everybody is unique and had different roles in life. He would be remembered as a good friend, a father, a fighter to his family and friends. The public remembers him as a great singer, the King of Philippine Rap, the Father of Pinoy Hip Hop, and someone who inspired them because of his music. The only Master Rapper.

What the distinguished Lino Brocka made in the significant era of Philippine Cinema

Listen to Hakuna Matata and Can You Feel the Love Tonight; youll know exactly what I am trying to say. However, just to be honest with you, I dont really consider myself as Sir Elton Johns fan; I know no more than his songs in Lion King. Well, those songs were enough for me to admire him and tell everyone he is a genius but I know hes even greater than that. That is why while I am writing this; I decided to pay tribute to him and listen to his other songs, particularly giving attention to those which I havent even heard before. Remarkably, the more I listen to his unfamiliar songs, the more he is being familiar to me a passionate man who has all these ideals and who, no doubt, has the talent and the willingness to share it to the world. No need to refer to Wikipedia to realize that.

idweek contributor Star Elamparo once wrote There are quality movies and there are quality movies. In the countrys movie industry, which churns about 150 films a year, quality films are few and far in between. Still, they do exist. And a lot of them were made by Lino Brocka.

The decades of 70s to 90s saw the rise and fall of the most highly acclaimed director of the local cinema, National Artist for Film of 1997 Lino Brocka. He thrived in its so-called Second Golden Age when his peers were making their own masterpieces, like Ishmael Bernal, Mike de Leon, Celso Ad. Castillo, Laurice Guillen, Marilou Diaz-Abaya, and renowned veteran from the 50s Eddie Romero. Many of todays stars owe their rise in showbiz and acting trophies to Lino Brocka. At the peak of his career in the 70s and 80s, he made films that won critical acclaim and awards for their social and artistic impact. Brocka made his first movie in 1970 under Lea Productions Wanted: Perfect Mother with the cast of Boots AnsonRoa, Dante Rivero, Eddie Mercado, and Gina Alajar. He also wrote this melodrama, which won Best Screenplay in the 1970 Manila Film Festival. That same year, he directed Santiago, winning his second award, this time as Best Director from the Citizens Council for Mass Media. This action drama starred Fernando Poe, Jr. (FAMAS nomination for Best Actor), Hilda Koronel (Best Supporting Actress), and others in a powerhouse cast. In 1971, he made Tubog sa Ginto, which was controversial for its homosexual theme, and Stardoom, a dark, tragic view of movie showbiz, garnered FAMAS nominations for Lolita Rodriguez (Best Actress) and Caridad Sanchez (Best Supporting Actress). The cast included Walter Navarro, Hilda Koronel, Mario OHara, Eddie Garcia and several other seasoned actors. His early works appealed to mass audiences and made money, endearing Brocka to producers of the movie industry. But after nine movies with Lea Productions he became disgruntled with commercialism and fell silent in the first two years of Ferdinand Marcoss martial law regime.

The Decemberists is an indie folk band hailing from Portland Oregon formed in year 2000. Their frontman, lead singer Colin Meloy, writes many of the bands fanciful lyrics as heard in Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect. The Decemberists have performed alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra and have garnered critical praises and now signed to Capitol Records.

Brocka set up his independent outfit, CineManila, and began to make films after his own heart. His landmark movie, Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (1974), an indictment of religious prejudice against social outcasts in a local village, won six FAMAS awards and two nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director; Best Actor (for Brockas protg Christopher de Leon) and Best Actress (Lolita Rodriguez as the madwoman Kuala). Brocka wrote the screenplay together with actor-director Mario OHara, who played a leper in the film. Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag, topbilled by another Brocka protg, Bembol Roco, portrayed a young probinsyanos search for his sweetheart Ligaya Paraiso (Hilda Koronel) in the violence-ridden city. For his role as a tragic hero, Bembol bagged the FAMAS Best Actor award. Equally respected director Mike de Leon did the exquisite cinematography. Insiang, a story of rape and revenge set in Manilas Tondo slums, starred Hilda Koronel in the title role, for which she earned a FAMAS nomination as Best Actress. Mona Lisa won as Best Supporting Actress. The film also reaped several nominations from the Gawad Urian. This was the first of Brockas films to be shown and acclaimed at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in France. He was nobodys man but his own. In 1979, when Jaguar won the Urian awards for Best Picture, he spurned the critics attention. During the Urian awards night, he ascended the stage not to receive his directorial award but to reject it, saying that under the guise of impartiality, they [the Manunuris] practice their prejudices anyway. He then refused all further awards and nominations from the MPP. He was a man known for passions that ran high and ideals that never dimmed. Two of her last films, Gumapang Ka sa Lusak and Sa Kabila ng Lahat, were studies of corruption in politics. The man was relentless. Before he died, he was about to make a contemporary film version of Jose Rizals Noli Me Tangere. Just talking about it generated so much excitement. But this one project he will never do. On May 22, 1991, at 1:30am, he died in a car accident on East Ave. in Quezon City. The car, which smashed into a concrete lamppost, was being driven by his latest protg, William Lorenzo, who was seriously injured. Lino Brocka was 52, and he could do even more quality films in modern cinema than any other directors. He is the resolute artist in the dark screen we know as the Philippine cinema. We mourn his passing.

The Shins. They have moved in 2002 to Portland, Oregon after the success with their indie rock album Oh, Inverted World which debuted on 1997 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This band helped popularize indie music with their Beach Boy-esque indie pop sound. Some popular Shins tracks are New Slang, Caring is Creepy, and Australia.

Wilco was formed in 1993 upon the breakup of the alternative country band Uncle Tupelo. John Lennon and Neil Young was the bands influence in making their music, and is largely considered indie rock despite Wilcos relationships with major record labels.

Some of their top songs are I Will Follow You Into The Dark, Soul Meets Body, and Crooked Teeth. Modest Mouse. THE BEATLES:
The Fab Four of the 60s
BY JORDEENE SHEEX B. LAGARE

The movie was starred by one of the greatest actress of all time, Anita Linda as Lola Sepa; PUPs very own Rustica Carpio as Lola Puring and Ketchup Eusebio as Mateo, the suspect and the grandson of Lola Puring. The story tells of the struggle of two grandmothers in a stormy season to raise money for their respective grandsons; one for her grandsons bail and the other for her grandsons funeral. They proved that no matter how frail they seem, they will fight for their loved ones. It all started when Lola Purings grandson, Mateo hold ups and accidentally killed Lola Sepas grandson. The latter filed a complaint at a police station and later learned that the perpetrator is already in the lawmens custody and then she decided to continue the fight for justice. On the other hand, Lola Puring tried her best to get Mateo out of the prison. Then she went to a probono lawyer to seek help but she was advised to make an amicable settlement with the victims family instead because the case is without bail. The sequence of the story may seem slow at points but, for me, thats what made me want to finish the movie. I was raised by my grandparents so it clearly has an effect on my being. I had felt the selfless love of the elderly, especially if you are the beloved apo. The message of the story had a huge impact on me and based on my opinion, it has accomplished its purpose. Everyday, people struggle to have food on the table; they are even pushed to the point wherein they are kapit sa patalim. Based on what I saw on the film, it directly tells us of how the justice system of the country runs. That money has the capacity to make the law upside down. The story made an appeal to my reasoning; I realized that there is no need to prolong the agony of both sides if the problem can be settled right away. But there is still a part of me that says Law must still be above all. But this movie makes me believe otherwise. It is indeed entertaining and appealing to the emotion. Seeing how two grandmothers work hard to attain what is rightfully deserved by their loved one. The film for me deserves a nine-star rating. Though it is slow pacing, the story seems to get a hold of me. There are of course a few tweaks but it has managed to give my eyes a feast of what really a Brillante Mendoza creation is all about.

he Beatles is the most celebrated music act in the 20th century with their best-selling albums and singles, numerous awards and recognitions, and distinct influence and legacy in the music industry.

The bands journey started with John Lennon in Liverpool, England when he formed a skiffle group called the Blackjacks with his friends from Quarry Bank School in March 1957. But they changed their name to The Quarrymen after discovering a respected group was already using the name. Then Paul McCartney joined the group after he and Lennon met in July 1957. The following year, McCartneys friend, George Harrison, auditioned to Lennon. Although Harrison was only 14 at that time, he became the groups lead guitarist after about a month of persistence. Two years later, Lennons school friends left the group to pursue schooling at the Liverpool College of Art. Lennons art school friend Sutcliffe became part of the band in January 1960, who suggested of changing the bands name to The Beetles, until they changed their name to The Silver Beatles, and to The Beatles in the middle of August. The all-male rock, composed of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals), and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals), had their first performance on 17 December 1960 at the Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool.

They auditioned for Decca records but were rejected because groups of guitars are way out. Later, record shop owner Brian Epstein became their manager. Their first single, Love Me Do, made it to the British chart and reached number 17. Most of The Beatles songs were written by Lennon and McCartney. One of the highlights in their career is their 1st appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show where the said show garnered over 70 million people viewing. Another is their performance at Shea Stadium in 1965. Theyve set new world record of having 55,600 concert audience and revenue, a first time in the history of popular music anyone had played in a proper stadium as opposed to a theater or concert hall. For a decade of being active in the music industry, The Beatles has done 27 studio albums, 4 live albums, 57 compilation albums, 21 extended plays, 55 singles, 10 video albums, and 37 music videos.

Missin the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema
It seems like yesterday and yet it really was four decades back. Viewpoint helps you remember because, like most everyone else, maybe you were too Gen-X to care BY ARJOHN C. DE GUZMAN

As a worker in the program of DZRH 666 KHz, she was said to be a veteran anchor who loves her work, till her last moment before she suffered stroke. She still pursued to work in her radio program to help her listeners, to open their eyes about how life is worth fighting for. I always take a moment to lend my ears in her program every time I hear her name being mentioned on air, Tiya Delyyy.. Then I just find myself so serious tuning in to the drama of the characters. I realized that some of the stories being aired discussed more of the reality in life.

ime for an honest appraisal. Lets pause from all this jingoism, put things in their proper places, and call a spade a spade. This: Can the new crop of Filipino movies hold a candle to the filmography of the previous era?

Bernal, Brocka and Castillowith Romero bridging them to the triumvirate of Gerardo de Leon, Lamberto Avellana and Manuel Conde of the Golden Age of the 50s; and Mike de Leon linking them to the younger filmmakers of the 80s. Any one year in the local movie industry that can churn out so many outstanding films can be considered exceptional, let alone a whole decade. We can argue that an average of 300 movies a year were produced then, while now we have what? less than 50? So, if we go by ratio of quantity to quality, it would be patently lopsided. But were not sure if that argument holds in this case. Contrary to common perception, however, the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema did not occur solely in the 70s. It extended to the early 80s, producing such masterworks as Bernals Himala and Manila by Night; Brockas Kapit sa Patalim and Orapronobis. After that, there was mostly a void through the 90s, when several times Philippine cinema had been declared either dying or dead.

A woman with dedication to her listeners A woman of love and respect After that, I just find myself taking a moment to A woman who has marked its name to the contemplate with her advice to the listeners. The broadcasting industry drama from the letters of her listeners was enlivened as she give advice to the letter sender. hen I was young, I used to listen to a radio drama that has caught my everyday routine of relaxation. I used to listen with some advices of an anchor thru the letters of its listeners. She was actually my so-called Charo Santos in the local radio broadcasting. The woman I am talking about is Fidela Tiya Dely Magpayo. A woman who made her way to radio dramas, popularized the Filipino songs a long time ago, and established her status as newscaster, commentator, radio dramatist, writer, singer and producer during her time. To date, she became the well-loved counselor of listeners in her radio programs Mga Kasaysayan sa mga Liham Kay Tiya Dely, and Ang Inyong Tiya Dely and with all her great contributions, she was considered to be the First Lady of the Philippine Radio.

The banner year was 1976. At no other time in Philippine film history has our national cinema produced so many gems in one year. It was the year that saw the release of Lino Brockas Insiang and Lunes, Martes; Ishmael Bernals Nunal sa Tubig and Ligaw na Bulaklak; Celso Ad. Castillos Daluyong at Habagat; Mario OHaras Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos and Mortal; Mike de Leons Itim; Behn Cervantes Sakada; Lupita Concios Minsay Isang Gamu-gamo; Jun Raquizas Sa Alabok Magbabalik; Eddie Romeros Ganito Kami Noon,Paano Kayo Ngayon? Four or five of these can be safely called masterpieces, and the top Filipino filmmakers of the era are represented. There is the triumvirate of

Love segments start to become a hit on radio stations, slowly becoming madness to listeners and start to become parallel to the music slots. How about you, why do you think love segments start to rise on most FM stations? ... A purpose Driven Life... from page 38 We are all currently on a test; we are all doing a temporary assignment, and we are all expected to trust God. God has five purposes for your life. Worship God. Worship is far more than going church service. Worship is a lifestyle of enjoying God, loving him, and giving ourselves to be used for His purposes. Fellowship. The life God intends for you to enjoy is more than just believing; it includes belonging. Learning to love is one of the greatest lessons God wants you to learn on earth before taking you into eternity. Spiritual Maturity. It is becoming like Jesus Christ in the way we think, feel and act. The more you develop Christ like character, the more youll bring glory to God. Serve Others. The only way to serve God is by serving others. Thats why God had custom-designed you with talents, gifts, skills and abilities. Share Gods Glory. God wants us to share His love and purposes to others. In these five purposes, I think people (even I) would have difficulty doing the third one; becoming like Christ. We all know that people tend to commit sins; its inevitable, especially in this world where everyone considers competition. It makes me wonder, Does Rick Warren applied all he had written in this book? Is he now entitled for eternal life? The book is helpful indeed to figure out what are Gods purposes, but still, doing so is not easy as how it was written in the book. 1. Ganito Kami Noon Paano Kayo Ngayon? (1976) Director: Eddie Romero Screenplay: Eddie Romero, Roy Iglesias Starring: Christopher de Leon, Gloria Diaz Set at the turn of the 20th century during the Filipino revolution against the Spaniards and, later, the American colonizers, it follows a nave peasant, Kulas Ocampo (Christoper de Leon) through his leap of faith to become a member of an imagined community.

2. Pagdating sa Dulo (1971) Director: Ishmael Bernal Screenplay: Ishmael Bernal Starring: Rita Gomez, Vic Vargas, Eddie Garcia A dancer and taxi driver are fished out of poverty and anonymity by a commercial film director. The obsession with success forces them to affect images as movie stars, which suppress and eventually destroy them as persons and lovers. 3. Itim (1976) Director: Mike de Leon Screenplay: Clodualdo del Mundo Jr. Starring: Charo Santos, Tommy Abuel Using exquisite cinematography, this film depicts the mystery and horror of a dead womans possession of her younger sister, in order to reveal the circumstances of her death and avenge herself on her lover.

4. Nunal Sa Tubig (1976) Director: Ishmael Bernal Screenplay: Jorge Arago Starring: Elizabeth Oropesa, Daria Ramirez Employing an experimental cinematic style, Bernals opus recreates the quality and pace of life of a village surrounded by sea, as it is caught in the eternal cycle of love and hate, of fertility and pollution, of birth and death. 5. Minsay Isang Gamu-Gamo (1976) Director: Lupita Aquino-Kashiwahara Screenplay: Marina Feleo-Gonzales Starring: Nora Aunor, Jay Ilagan, Gloria Sevilla Knowing that the administration of Pres. Ferdinand Marcos would not allow the public showing of any films criticizing the American existence in the Philippines, the producers tapped Nora Aunor to star in the film believing that the superstar has connection with the president and his wife Imelda Marcos. The film, despite being critical to the presence of the United States military bases, was indeed released due to this factor.

1. Manila By Night (1980) Director: Ishmael Bernal Screenplay: Ishmael Bernal Starring: Nora Aunor, Jay Ilagan, Gloria Sevilla The hidden nightlife of ordinary people living in Manila unveils. Lovers and families conflicts are radically pitted against each other as they live in the night streets rampant with drugs and prostitution. This landmark film of Ishmael Bernal depicts the darkness of city life so vividly that it was once prohibited to use the word Manila on its title. 2. Brutal (1980) Director: Marilou Diaz-Abaya Screenplay: Ricky Lee Starring: Amy Austria, Gina Alajar, Charo Santos Monica Real (Austria) is arrested for the murder of her husband and his two friends. Monicas case draws the interest of Clara Valdez (Santos), a feminist and journalist who is living in with a young executive. In her investigation of the case, Clara talks to Monicas mother, who tells her of Monicas timidity and her rape by the man she eventually married. Clara also meets Cynthia (Alajar), who reveals Monicas other personality, which stemmed from her association with the sexually wayward Cynthia. The patient finally speaks and tells of the sexual humiliations that drove her to murder. 3. Kisapmata (1981) Director: Mike de Leon Screenplay: Clodualdo del Mundo Jr., Raquel Villavicencio Starring: Vic Silayan, Charito Soilis, Charo Santos Employing economy of means and the power of suggestion, director Mike de Leon effectively presents a highly visual and stark character study of a demented patriarch and retired policeman (Vic Silayan) and his acquiescent family. The old mans tight grip and his submissive wife (Charito Solis) and daughter (Charo Santos) is threatened when the young woman marries her fianc, driving the father to fits of jealousy and violence. 4. Oro, Plata, Mata (1982) Director: Peque Gallaga Screenplay: Jose Javier Reyes, Peque Gallaga Starring: Cherie Gil, Sandy Andolong, Joel Torre In the first of the three periods covered, as suggested by the title itself, two aristocratic families from Negros enjoy the comforts and luxuries of their social class before the war. But this is disrupted by the difficult and unpleasant events brought about by the war. Dramatic changes have taken place in the lives of the Ojeda sisters, Trining and Maggie. So, too, with the teen-aged Miguel of the Lorenzo clan, who emerges a courageous and responsible man, forced to defend himself and his loved ones. 5. Himala (1982) Director: Ishmael Bernal Screenplay: Ricky Lee Starring: Nora Aunor, Spanky Manikan A filmmaker (Spanky Manikan) plays a pivotal role in the unfolding of the story of a village miracle-maker (Nora Aunor) who in claiming the Virgin has appeared to her, consequently brings the dying barrio to life. Bernals parable is both philosophical and political. The filmmaker seems to have been set up as a representation of the artist who believes his art is a simple transcript of reality and finds himself confounded by the morality of condoning untruth by his failure to expose the outrage on the miracle-maker.

He says what he has to say to the caller. Sometimes, I find him offensive, but in the end, he chooses the right advice for his callers. One thing I also love about this segment is that they allow people of different ages to call and narrate their stories on-air. Because of this, the jock has to give his advice on-air without any scripts. He has to analyze the problem and give advice on-thespot. Unlike on other love advice segments, they get the love stories from emails and text messages. BEATING THE ODDS OF COMMERCIALISM:

MANILA KINGPIN
AGAINST MODERN FILMS

BY MARY ANN M. VILLAFLORES

anila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story is an official entry for 2011 Metro Manila Film Festival, which is far above other typical MMFF movies. The film likewise reflects its rarity to its director, Tikoy Aguiluz, who famously helmed the 90s film Segurista.
The Making Manila Kingpin is a true-to-life story of the legendary Nicasio Asiong (L-R) Jeorge Estregan as Asiong Salonga and Carla Abellana as Fidela, Asiongs wife Salonga (played by Jeorge Estregan), Tondos notorious gang lord way back when hood- the film showcase fight scenes and ruthless gang lums dominated some parts of Manila. It looks like wars, the film also takes a peak at his personal life; the purpose of producer in financing this movie is Asiong Salonga as a husband, as a father, and as a not merely to entertain and expect a blockbuster brother. The film has a lot of stories to tell that the hit, but to prove that local cinematography is not filmmakers had difficulty narrowing them into two defined by how colorful or high tech the quality of hours. The result was the phasing of the sequences effects is, but by how the entire production make a is not quite well done. There are some scenes that different taste of movie, especially at this time when jump from events to events, making it hard for me mainstream movies are dominated by love stories to follow the continuity of the story. and comedy-drama with generic titles. Venturing for this kind of movie is a risk, simply because Philippine action movies had long before left down in 1990s. The attempt of making the entire movie black and white is a challenge, but suited well to the 1950s setting, with which filmmakers should be given the credit in giving each frame a nice look despite the absence of color. Another, I appreciate how the entire production made the setting so real; from the costume to the set designs down to how actors played their characters as well. The opening scenes of the movie shows how Salonga had fight his bloody way to rise to power and reign as King of Tondo. He was tagged as the Robin Hood of Tondo for he used to rob the riches to give to the poor and protects his neighbors from more abusive muggers, which show the nobler side of Salonga. Although, majority of Controversies Manila Kingpin has been Graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board. Before it has been released on big screen, the film was buzzed by certain issues. The first issue was when Carla Abellana was not allowed to promote the movie produce by Viva films and Scenema Concept International because of the conflict with her exclusive contract with Regal which Carla has also an entry (Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow). Its what the producers called conflict of interest. This, I say, is a conflict for profit, very wise indeed for the part of businessmen. The second issue is with Manila Kingpins director Tikoy Aguiluz who sought for legal actions to take out his name in all the films promo continued to page 19

remarkable and informational articles of one of the Inquirers youngest and colorful writers, Ms. Patricia Evangelista. Patricia was awarded as the Best Speaker on the 2004 International Public Speaking competition held in the UK. Her column Method to Madness (formerly titled Rebel Without A Clue) appears every Sunday in the Philippine Daily Inquirers Opinion Section. She is also a writer/host/segment producer for Living Asia Channel and for Media Focus, a talk show on media affairs hosted by Cheche Lazaro. In addition, she writes for the history talk show The Explainer hosted by Manolo Quezon and a consultant for debate show Square off. She serves as the National Youth Spokesperson for Operation Smile and a volunteer writer for Gawad Kalinga. She also produces the series Story Line for the ABS-CBN News Channel. One would be amazed at the wealth of ideas this lady has. She writes about many things that young readers could relate to. For example, she sometimes writes about her experience riding a cab, she writes about her room and even about her debates with her college professors from the University of the Philippines. Another favorite of youngsters is the Young Blood feature. The featured articles that come out on Young Blood are contributed by avid readers of the Inquirer. Only the young and the youthful are allowed to submit their articles for publication on Young Blood. Therefore, if youre not young anymore but still youthful, you might want to write for Young Blood about your experiences and thus, share them to the rest of the young and youthful readers of the Philippine Daily Inquirer here and abroad.

One another interesting part of an Inquirer newspaper is the 2BU! Feature. For todays youth, featuring what they think and what makes them tick and click. Inquirer Lifestyles 2BU is all about -and-written by- the youth of today. Its about what they do, what they buy, and where they go. Bearing a cutting edge layout and strong visuals, 2BU carries an identity as distinct as todays youth. 2bU receives a deluge of mail from youngsters - and their parents - who want advice on a wide range of topics ranging from family and parenting to teen pressure, breakups, and what to wear on Monday mornings. Like Abigail Abbey Sy, a simple teenager who has a knack for writing, a heart for art, good taste in music and finds inspiration in fairy tales, travel and all things nice. She paints sweetness in the online world, one blog post at a time. She was interviewed last May by Laura Angeles, a writer for the Philippine Daily Inquirer and 5 months later, here is the article, in print! Shes so thankful and honored that her love for blogging and passion for art has given her the chance to get featured. Never in a million years would I expect to see my blog, works and h.e.a.r.t. products printed in the local newspaper. It is such a great feeling Sy said. 3 Idiots: Reflecting its Smart Ways

BY BERNADETH B. BUENO do not want, even if it means losing the child. 3 idiots takes light-hearted but pointed punch in the education system, raising pertinent questions about the relevance of learning, the obsession to high grades, and the dangerous aftermath of parental pressure to pursue traditional belief. The movie, I must say is an allin one movie. The movie carries a full package of drama and learning. It entertains, it makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you think, it makes you sing and dance, it makes you fall in love and it makes you learn and dream.

AS A MATTER OF INQUIRY:
THE PDI IN PRINT AND ONLINE
BY MARICAR O. ANTONIO

f there is one word that characterizes the Philippine Daily Inquirer, this word is sensational. Whether this is a good or not-so-good word for you is another matter. The Philippine Daily Inquirer prides itself as the countrys most influential and widely-read broadsheet today. Much of its success can be attributed to its papers tagline: Balanced News, Fearless Views. But many believe that the Inquirer is much more than just ink and paper. Beyond its balanced news and fearless views, the Inquirer is where it is at today because of the caliber of people who are part of this organization. Do you want sensational news? If your answer to these questions is a definite Yes, then all you have to do is to take a glimpse of the Inquirer and you will know what it is all about. The fact is, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, or the Inquirer as it is popularly known, has the knack of coming up with headlines that will make you want to immediately read the entire newspaper.

Inquirer is that of publishing articles that do not fear anyone. This makes the Inquirer a target of criticism from the government and at times, from private entities. This daily broadsheet has national circulation and is the most popular and the most highly read newspaper all over the country. Due to its wide circulation and popularity, the Inquirer has always affected public opinion on many matters that its writers and columnists have commented about. One spectacular sections of PDI is the lifestyle section which covers special focus on arts, design, books, health and fitness, 2bU!, tastes, dining out, trips, fashion and home, entertainment, Family, Weekwaker- uppers, Weddings and Engagements, Surprises, Playtime. Its wide array of content can be credited to one of its desk editors, Lito Zulueta, who happens to be also be a member of Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP) and publications adviser of USTs The Varsitarian.

It touches mainly on students suicides; parents pushing students into a field they are not devoted on; students silently trying to excel in something they are not passionate about; enthusiastic students who learn by just memorization without knowing the meaning what is going into their head, 3 Idiots are not really about being an idiot and also human emotions of how when a friend but being an opposite of it. One can attest that this fails, you feel sad but when the same friends top in movie is reflective and profound, at the same time college, jealousy takes hold. All these aspects and more are beautifully woven into the movie. its hilarious. The movie either entertains or enlightens us. It makes you feel optimistic and at the same time forces you to think hard about some of the issues plaguing our country. Whether its tackling corruption on politics, religion, or the way we treat our elderly, the film taught us to use our own role in the society to move mountains. Rather than let the cultural diversity divide our unity, their stories use that diversity as strength to overcome our won individual weaknesses. The film is meant to criticize the educational system; the creation of robots and ambitious parents who insist their child do something they Everyone can relate in this movie especially college students. In many ways, I can relate on the characters situation. I know and understand what pressure or should I say the killing pressure they are talking about and even fear sometimes. So I really appreciate the simple but not that typical story. And Im so inspired with some remarkable dialogues such as: This is college, not a pressure cooker. After hearing that line, I realize that it is right. This is a funny line but reflective inside. I think this is much bigger than just the film, its a cultural phenomenon. The movie will continued to page 19

All is well! as the most important message brought by this Bollywood movie goes. This film imparts a non-threatening discussion of our daily life as if its going to be our last day here on Earth.

Young people surely never forget the remarkable and informational articles of one of the Inquirers youngest and colorful writers, Ms. Patricia EvanOne major characteristic of the Philippine Daily gelista.

the Life of Kuya Kim Atienza

When the walking encyclopedia, Ernie Baron passed away, Atienza replaced him as the weatherman of TV Patrol in 2004. Even the late master weatherman referred to him as his rightful heir and asked him to love the job he loved. He was given his own segment in Magandang Umaga, Pilipinas which is Animalandia and stayed till the show was reformatted into Umagang Kay Ganda. Being a son of the former Manila Mayor, Jose Atienza, Kuya Kim also tried his luck on politics. He was a councilor of the fifth district of Manila from 1995 to 2004. But Kuya Kim admitted that he was only in it just so someone would take his fathers place.

PJI and its three tabloids

BY TRIXIE R. ESPIEL

Peoples Taliba Taliba is the counterpart of Peoples Journal in the Filipino language. They share the same news, but Taliba has more comprehensive style of writing aimed for most Filipino readers. Taliba is balita in reverse. Also, one of its remarkable writers is Mr. Theodore Jurado from the sports section, who writes sports news for this newspaper and also English for Peoples Journal and Tonight. Peoples Tonight Peoples Tonight mostly contains police stories. The more bizarre the news is, the higher the chance it has in landing at the tabloids front page. However, there are instances when common news items are just playfully written by the tabloids writers to make sensationalized stories which catches readers attention. Indeed, they know when and where to put an angle to a story. The titles they use are somehow disturbing but it is actually one of the techniques they use to make their paper interesting. This tabloid also uses a blind-item style even in local news reports which does not even concern important people. It does not seem appropriate and reliable and it can also be confusing for the readers. Their stories also lack some elements of the news like accuracy and prominence. Other news occurred a couple of days before they publish the story, while some elements are too much or more than enough, like the human interest. Though the three papers are not the best seller tabloid in the country, not the most accountable and most reliable newspaper, the company still continues to publish news stories, for a simple reason, business must goes on.

eoples Journal, Peoples Tonight and Taliba are the three daily tabloids owned by one of the biggest publishing companies in the country, the Philippine Journalists Inc. (PJI), also known as the Journal Group of Publications. It started before the Martial Law era, established by the former Leyte Governor Cocoy Romualdez, Imelda Marcos brother. The company is currently in the midst of controversies and problems, from labor issues to keeping up with the challenges the technology is bringing to conventional media. However, despite these, the Journal newspapers are still in the market. Theres no competition and comparison between the three national daily tabloids. They simply share and divide news from all over the country into three different newspapers. Each tabloid has their own character in terms of news content and scope. Peoples Journal Peoples Journal usually contains political news and issues concerning the administration, government officials and some known leaders. Using the English language, it is more serious and formal. Common news items in this tabloid also includes updates and stories in the legislative. It consists of sections for news, sports, opinion/ editorial, entertainment, Pinoy lifestyle and business. News and sports news usually have the biggest space on their paper.

Making a film does not solely rely on one person. Doing film is a group labor and I think changing such for the betterment of the film does not mean by passing ones authority. Director is a director, but one must also be open for suggestions or corrections. An Award Winning Film Sweats were rewarded, controversies were out taken after it has been recognized in the 37th MMFF Awards Night. This is the film that showed alternating emotional highs and lows, a catch point, an invincible hero, and perfect knowledge of when to break into song or the interval. It has combined characters, a well-weaved narrative of the meaning of true education, the joy of learning and of course, friendships. Aside from being a highly amusing comedy film, its also a wonderful showcase of optimism. The best thing about this film is that it gives a social message in a very fine matter. It makes parents realize that they should not force their children as far as their professions likings are concerned. It gives clear picture of our education system. We keep on studying what is given in books and some time not even realize the actual meaning of the sentence given in books. The film in the end is a broad entertainer that plays to the gallery, well-intented but sadly mixed-up. As we all realize later in this film (and in our lives): everyone turns out fine eventually.

TV5: Competitor or Clone?

BY SHARMEYNE I. BONTIGAO We all know that in a competition, once your competitor launched something new, you have to launch a better one. That is what GMA and ABS-CBN do. They see to it that when the other station airs a new show, they will conceptualize and create the same theme that will beat the ratings of the other network. They adapt each others TV shows to see which will gain more viewership ratings. But as TV5 grows into a bigger network, they start to mimic GMA-7 and ABSCBN to keep its ratings in close ties with the two giant TV networks. They adapted everything: the musical variety shows, comedy sitcoms, public affairs programs, fantasy series, showbiz news and cartoon shows. TV5 also created anew of its station tag into Kapatid the same with ABS-CBNs Kapamilya and GMA-7s Kapuso.

People Driven by Guilt. They are the people who spend their entire lives running from regrets and hiding their shame. They are manipulated by memories; they allow their past to control their future. The book says that we dont have to be prisoner of our past for Gods purpose is never limited to our past. People Driven by Resentment. They are those who hold on to their hurts. They tend to let the feel of pain over and over in their mind instead of releasing it. God has long before assured people that those who have hurt them in the past cannot continue to hurt them now unless they hold on to the pain through resentment. People Driven by Fear. Fear-driven people often miss great opportunities because they are afraid to venture out. They play safe, avoid risks and try to maintain status quo. Fear is a self-imposed prison which can only be defeated by moving against it with the spiritual weapons of faith and love.

Rick Warren

Life on Earth is a Test; a Trust; and a temporary Assignment.

V5, formerly known as ABC 5, is a major commercial TV network owned by business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan. Since it was re-launched last August 9, 2008, TV5 has been reported as one of the top 5 TV networks based on AGB Nielsen survey. Is TV5 going to be a new competitor of ABS-CBN and GMA-7?

Another, we cant deny that TV5s stars and celebrities just came from either GMA-7 or ABS-CBN. They seldom produce their own stars. In other words, TV5 seems to be a mixture of the two bigger TV networks. When it comes to primetime, you can easily see the mixture of ABS-CBN and GMA stories merely because some of the story writers and the actors were from the two other stations. Since the two were established a long time ago, the stars can adapt the environment of the network. With their transfer to TV5, they bring with them the acting skills they got from the network they came from. I hate how TV5 airs foreign movies and cartoons dubbed in Filipino. Yes, maybe kids will understand the language, but for grownups, to the truest sense of the word, its corny as what they call it. If they do not stop copying the themes and ideas of the other networks, they will lose their identity. Filipinos are looking for an alternative viewing experience since the two other networks are merely competing with each other. But as I see it, TV5 cannot offer a fresh and new viewing experience to the audience since they are copying ideas from the two. So is TV5 a new competitor, an extension, or a clone TV? People Driven by Materialism. Their desire to acquire becomes the whole goal of their lives. They tend to have this misconception of having more will make them happier, more important, and more secure, which the author called temporary and untrue. God says your value is not determined by your valuables. Likewise, real security can only be found in that which can never be taken from you-your relationship to God.

People Driven by the Need for Approval. They allow the expectations of other people to control their lives. These are the people who follow the crowd and who usually get lost in it. People are misled by the thought that death is the end of life; many are afraid to die. I long before knew that life on earth is a test, a temporary one, but Warren further discussed that the reason why most people are afraid to death and long for immortality is because God had planted eternity in the human heart which can only be found after our body here on Earth has torn down. continue to page 47

ABS-CBN and GMA Network, Inc. claim respectively they are number one in Mega Manila and nationwide viewership ratings. They both showcased mass-oriented TV shows, reality shows, and others. But what if TV5 joins the roster, who will emerge as number one? TV5 became well known when it was first aired as Shake Mo TV Mo and gained ratings because of their most watched TV show, the tagalized Spongebob Squarepants. Since 2010, it began its competition with ABSCBN and GMA-7. At first, I thought that TV5 will turn out as a different TV network, like a breath of fresh air. But it soon became a clone of the two biggest TV networks.

There are lots of books published and distributed all throughout the world, but theres still a never ending quest for lifes meaning. Reading A Purpose Driven Life made me realize a lot of things. This book was designed by author in such a way that everyone can easily understand its context, and you will find out that it is worth to read. To be fair enough, let me share you some of its lessons that will shake you up to the highest magnitude, but its always up to you, readers, on how you are going to make or to face the aftershocks. Its an hapless story of the people of the Sampad, Masbate who depend in a well for their source of water. Unfortunately, Sampad being a desert-like town, the well they used to get water was always in mixture of mud. This surreal way of living provided nothing but fierce droughts to the town. Contrary to this, it cannot be denied that every day, we are living in a world which provides everyone clean and potable water. In the case of the Sampad people, living in this place have no choice but to consume this mud-like and mud-tasted water without minding the illnesses they can get with it. Its also a story informing everyone how important the saying Every drop of water counts, particularly to the people of Sampad. This story calls for the priority of the government to provide the children a more convenient way to access for water without spending their whole time to dig for well just to have clean water. The local government must provide them stable sources of clean water and prioritize their safety and health.

Sandra Aguinaldos Pasan-Pasan

The I-witness was hailed by the Catholic Mass Media Awards as the 2011 Winner for Best Educational Program through its episode Pasan-Pasan hosted by Sandra Aguinaldo. This Pasan-Pasan is also awarded as the Outstanding Televised Feature on Youth and Education of The Lasallian Scholarum Awards in September 2011. This episode is a story of brotherhood, love, perseverance and loyalty between family members. Its a story of an 18-year old crippled child named Pablito who suffers osteo-

CHInoy TV

BY ELAIDIA LIZ V. OLIVEROS

I thought that the CHI stands for Chinese since it is a Filipino-Chinese program. Well, I was wrong. The CHI stands for good life and energy which means that we should enjoy life at its fullest. Ive watched several episodes of the program and the segment that I have liked so far was the Chi Chow. I would wish that I would be the host so that I could eat the delicacies that they are featuring. They have featured the top three shabu-shabu in the metro, the organic cooking of Chef Tatung, and many more. Chinoy TV, together with some partners, organized the Chinoy Hao Bang 2012 last January 22, 2012 to celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Water Dragon at the SM Mall of Asia. They gave away lots of prizes and also organized the first ever Chinoy Strip, an event where every guest who registers would be given a map to follow and they would win prizes and a chance to win a trip for two to USA when they finish it. I participated of course and I had fun and a loot bag to go with it. Unfortunately, I didnt win any of their raffle prizes. Maybe next time. The fireworks after the event really amazed me. It feels like I was under a night sky filled with vibrant flashing stars. It really ended with a bang.

consider embracing progressive ways, but his dispossessed halfbrother avenges himself by destroying the more fortunate. The events that form the backdrop to this novel are the Huk rebellion which was eminent due to the rebellion against the rich landowners in Northern Luzon. Revealing the Reality The Mass and The Pretenders (1962) revolves around the world of Antonio Samson who moves through all strata of urban society, revealing the destructive social forces that operate within it. Po-On was set during the late 19th century during the perishing years of the Spanish realm. The latter still retained some struggling leftovers of its colonial civil services, including some manorial lords in the plains of Central Luzon island, descendants of the Basque and SpanishCatalan settlers, served by immigrants from the deep Ilocano country up north. In one scene, a Basque grandee comes to the town of Rosales, when the settlement is still unorganized, and designates the limits of his domain with his whip. Sins looks back on the history of the Philippines during the twentieth century through the eyes of the amoral Don Carlos Corbello, or C.C., who took part in that history and, on his deathbed, is reaping much of what he sowed. Dusk jumps back to the time of the Spanish-American War, whose Philippine theatre (as opposed to the Cuban theatre) is largely unknown to most Americans. In the course of Sionil Joses work, which calls to mind Balzacs Human Comedy if on a smaller scale, we get an increasingly defined picture of Philippine history over more than a century. We are shown all kinds of people, from the moral cowards to the fiercely heroic, from the ferociously greedy to the selflessly philanthropic. In the face of all the tragic events in their lives, many of the people in Sionil Joses epic are still able to say We shall overcome. Indeed, Jose is the only writer who has made a series of novels that brought intelligent and imaginative conception of a century of Philippine life. His works had simply touched the various aspects of life of an individual in this type of society that we have today.

Fears death threats but takes it as a challenge BY JORDEENE SHEEX B. LAGARE

His dad suffered a mild stroke in September 1992 and the 37-year-old TV and radio personality needed to find a job to help his parents. He planned to work in Jollibee but chose to work as part time writer when he heard of a job opening in DZEC, operated by Eagle Broadcasting Corporation. He was first asked to translate to Filipino an editorial published by Inquirer. Good thing he came from Nueva Ecija, and writes and speaks Tagalog profoundly. Two days after his application, the news manager of the station asked him to come back. Anthony, or more popularly known as Ka Tunying (his fathers nickname that he chose to use after his fathers death in 2002), got his job in DZEC as a part-time news writer, then he became a news producer, and later on a stations field reporter. He transferred to DZMM in 1997, ABS-CBNs radio station and became its field reporter. Three years after, he joined Gerry Baja in the radio program Ito ang Radyo Patrol, which led to their current tandem program Dos por Dos that airs every MondayFriday from 5:00-6:00AM and 5:30-6:30PM. Aside from Dos por Dos, he is part of Umaga kay Ganda (UKG); XXX (Exklusibong, Explosibong, Expos); and Ako ang Simula with Karen Davila and Atty. Pochoy Labog. He anchors Iba-Balita ni Anthony Taberna, a weeknight on Studio 23 that delivers latest news around the Philippines and airs his opinions at the same time. In addition to his daily programs, he does exclusive interviews and reports in TV Patrol and Bandila. This broadcaster received several awards and recognitions. With this book, one can understand the hottest issue today - the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona. The Face of the Shadow

Gone were the days when newspapers specifically meant reading on paper and when television and radio shows only meant one time airing either you watch it on time or you miss it. Nowadays, thanks to the internet, these kinds of media can be accessed anytime and anywhere we want even without spending an extra centavo. Indeed, even media storage these days does not require you a big room or dozens of filing cabinet, all you need is a computer and an internet connection.

snt it amazing how the Internet has rapidly become a part of our everyday lives? From our personal needs like communicating to our work and school-related tasks like researching, internet can indeed be considered a necessity.

Newspaper pages are now turned simply by clicking. Like environment advocates would say, it would be a great way to save the environment because online newspapers means there would be a lesser need to cut down trees and process them to be pieces of paper.

Even television viewership and radio listenership was not as high when internet was still an unknown media. As time goes by, more and more people prefer the more convenient means of accessing newspapers, television and radio. While it can be considered a successful trend for the so-called new media, this phenomenon is taking its toll in the traditional media serving more of a threat.

Marites Daguilan Vitug, editor-in-chief of Newsbreak magazine and co-founder and board member of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism(PCIJ), launched the book Shadow of Doubt: Probing the Supreme Court on March 2010. 12. During 2003, that was 9 years ago, you were awarded as the Natatanging Gawad Urian of the Year, being one of the first in terms of being a scriptwriter. How was the feeling then? Did you see that coming Sir from the MPP?
RL: Oh, I did see it coming kasi usually mababa ang tingin sa mga writer.Di ba? Ang writer kasi invisible.Up to now nga, tinatawag akong direk. Karamihan ng tao, hindi nila ako nakikita as a writer. Nakikita nila ako as a director. Ganun ka-invisible ang writer. So when it (the award) came, it felt really good. Not only for myself but also for my fellow writers. Yun nga ang sinabi ko sa speech ko nun eh, na malaking karangalan ito bilang isang writer. Totoo na may respect sila sa ating mga writers, pero kapag andyan na hindi na nila nakikita. Hindi siya nagbago. That was 2003, Gawad Urian. When I launched Amapola last year, 2011, ang sinabikosa speech ko, akala ng maraming tao na walang writer na nageexist, na ang dialogues iniimbento lang ng artista o director. Up to now, its still the same issue. Gusto kong sabihin nila, Ay, nobelista yun. May taginting yung term na nobelista. I hope na dumating talaga yung time na yun. Yung kahit hindi nila napanood yung pelikula ko, pero nabasa yung nobela ko.
13. Who are the people you look up to until now? RL:Bukod sa mga hindi kilalang tao (sikat na tao), mga musicians. Greenday. Kapag nagpeperform sila nanonood ako. Yung sa Killers, di natuloy eh. Papanoorin ko sana. Kung natuloy sila rito, literally and figuratively, Ill watch. Sa kanila ako magpapa-autograph. So, musicians, I suppose. Mula noon hanggang ngayon. Even Filipino musicians. Sila Regine (Velasquez), hinahabol-habol ko yan kung saansaan. Spongecola, etc. Sa mga kaibigan, o kapwa writer, siguro si Pete (Lacaba). Hes a writer, journalist, poet. Follow-up: Siya po yung Natatanginganging Gawad Urian last year? RL: Oo, siya. Naunahan ko siya. Nagkakantiyawan nga kami eh. Wala kasi siyang inggit sa katawan. Usually kasi kapag director ka, pupurihin mopero may konting ano eh. Sa writers din. Dapat naman kasi talaga walang inggitan, walang kumpitensya.Si Pete pinupuri niya ako at ibang writers. 14. You are already an established writer. What else are your dreams, in your writing career? In your life? RL: Iniisip ko, magaling ba ako? Lalabas ba to ng maganda? Even after years of writing, it never ends. You never realget established, so I should keep writing. I want to keep improving. I wantto write more. May mga naka-stock nga ako na kailangan sulatin, sana theres enough time. I have so many books I want to come up with this year alone after Amapola. In fact, tatlo o apat yung naka harap na iniisipko kung alin ang uunahin ko. Pero lahat gusto ko ma-publish this year. So, ang dami ko pang kailangang isulat. Its exciting. Pero mahirap na mahirap magsulat. Especially na napatunayan kong kaya kong gumawa ng nobela, nakadalawa na ako. Nung una nakakatakot nga.Pero kaya pala. I want to write more. More novels. And go back to films. Write for films again. Write my memoirs. Graphic novels din sana. Stage plays.

10. Talking about that Sir, Himala was one of the celebrated films you had written with. How did you come up for that? RL: Yes, yung girl sa Mindoro, pinagpakitaan ni Virgin Mary at nagbago yung buhay sa buong island kasi nagpasukan ang mga turista, mga negosyante so na-prostitute yung lugar. That happened in 1967. But thats fictional. Its Cabra Island in Mindoro. 11. Who are the directors you have worked with and what can you say about them? RL: Well, I entered the movie industry on 1979. Perosa 80s ako talaga. They call it the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema. Maswerte ako kasi nung pumasok ako, hindi ako nagtrabaho sa iisang director lang. Nakatrabaho ko the best directors that time. From Mike de Leon, LauriceGuillen, Marilou Diaz, LinoBrocka, Ishmael Bernal, Mel Chionglo, Gil Portes. Lipat-lipat ako sa kanila. Yung mga kapwa ko scriptwriter, usually, they stick to one director. Magkasundo na eh, so gawa sila ng gawa ng pelikula. Ako, maski mga director nila nakakatrabaho ko. Tapos minsan sabay pa. I was doing Himala while I was also writing Moral. So, that time, I was really with Ishmael Bernal and Marilou Diaz Abaya. Sabay talaga, so na-wo-workshop ako ng iba-ibang director. Para siyang napakalaking workshop na natututo ako. So I allowed myself to learn. I observed everything. Hindi ko pinanindigan na, gusto ko ito lang at ayoko ng iba. Para akong sponge eh. Inaabsorb ko lahat. But I was not distinguishing eh. I am not saying I prefer this director or that director eh. Mas close man ako personally ditto kesa doon, I was always open to all directors na para bang wino-workshop nila ako talaga. Yun ang naaalala ko. So mahirap pumili eh. But I became close to Marilou (Diaz Abaya). I did more than half of (the number) all her works. I also became close friends with LinoBrocka and Ishmael Bernal. Well, I became friends with all of them. I was really learning from all of them.

ew years ago, Sixto Baflor Lagare (Kit Kilatis for his program) felt the need to establish an Internet TV as the trend of technology gone emergent in the social networking sites. At first, he put a website in the Internet (www.kitv.ph). Then, a good friend of him challenges him that his program will be put into live streaming. And last, as they say, the rest is history.
Kitv.ph launched its first airing on October 1, 2011 known as Kilatis International Television (KiTV) Philippines. Sixto Lagares advocacy to impart knowledge to the public is the main reason why he pursued the Internet T.V. As a radio commentator, he believes that more audience will be reached by his Internet TV. Ilang beses akong napunta sa lugar na hindi ko alam. Wala akong sense of direction. 7. Sir, how did you come up as a writer for film? RL: Hindi ako nag-aral ng film. I wrote short stories early on my career. Fourth year high school I wrote a short story, thats the start of my writing career. Nakapag-publish ako ng short story in Filipino sa isang national magazine in Manila. Given the P50, nakalayas ako finally sa mga nagampon sakin in Bicol. Pumunta ako ng Maynila dala-dala yung wallet ko na may P50 so, writing ang pinagkakakitaan ko para mabuhay but writing in fiction. Ang writing sakin lagi, paraan para mabuhay. So, hindi ka naman mabubuhay ng writing in fiction lang. Years later, kailangan kong mabuhay, kailangan kong magsulat, I decided mas pwedeng mabuhay sa pelikula so napasok ako sa pelikula. Hindi ko pinag-aralan, hindi ko plinano. But I need to write to survive. So napasok ako sa pelikula wala akong alam sa pagsulat ng script. Natuto ako on-the-job. Well, marami naming tumulong eh, sina Lino (Brocka), mga nakatrabaho kong direktor, tinignan nila yung mga script ko na minsan masyadong novelistic so natuto ako habang nagtatarabaho. Walang writing workshops noon eh. Ako yata ang kauna-unahang Pilipino na nag-conduct ng scriptwriting workshops. Kasi noon, mga seminars lang, nagkkwentuhan kaming mga writers, ano yung mga frustrations nila, sharing ng personal experiences. So yung laboratorystyle workshops, I dont think wala noon. What does the young generation of writers need to know? RL: Well, kailangan kilalanin nila yung sarili nila, na napakahirap gawin. Hindi mo naman totally know yourself hanggang sa mamatay ka. It will never happened. Step by step, you get to know of yourself. never happened. Step by step, you get to know of yourself. Tomorrow, magbabagong konti, pero yung core nandun eh. Pero sa step na ito, pag nagsusulat na ko, I try to know myself. Gagayahin mo yung ibang mga writers, gagayahin mo si ganyan, gusto mo maging Ricky Lee, ganito, ganyan, but in the end you will not be like them, you will never be like them. We already know how hard it is living in this country, how the powerless are stacked in the bottom and that the lives of the children are often being wasted, although it reminds us that we have to make it right than just watch our dreams crumble right before our own eyes. For a tough story like this, it never occurred to me that it can make me cry because of one thing -- FAMILY. Ong knows that even if people are greedy, one cannot escape the fact that they belong to a family, and using it as the protagonists

weaknesses make me frail in the knees too. The one and a half hour read is enough to make you ponder for a few more hours of the truth you have just known. It entertains you and mocks you a little if you are like any of the character. For me, once a novel had an appeal to my being, I am willing to give it a ten ten being the highest. Ong, who always use humor and sarcasm, went out of the box to let us know that he sometimes cares seriously. Maybe, we too, should start caring. The cover secretly shows what the title meant.

Nag-workshop ako ng nag-workshop ng tuloytuloy, mga workshop na diretso iniemploy para magsulat. My last workshop natapos last November. Follow-up: Sir yung process of joining the workshop. RL: Its open for everybody. Regardless of age, gender, profession, nakatapos o hindi nakatapos. Ako rin naman hindi nakatapos ng college, so wala akong discrimination, as long as may passion ka at gusto mong magsulat, I think may malaking chance basta yung passion nanjan. Kasi yung iba, ika nga to follow na lang eh. Ina-announce ko sa mga dyaryo, sa TV, and this time sa Facebook, yung registration day, wala naman kailangang dalhin. Pagdating sa application, dun na lang may ipapagawa. And then saka pipiliin. Kadalasan kasi, libo e ang nag-aapply. Mahirap makapasok pero ganun eh. Nung workshop namin sa ABS-CBN last 2006, there were 5,000 applicants, thats because announced by a big media. We chose two batches. Hindi mahirap mag-conduct ng workshop, mahirap yung pagpili. Kasi maraming mahuhusay na mapipilitan kang hindi tanggapin dahil sa sobrang dami. 6. Give us one thing (or things) people dont know about Ricky Lee. RL: Well, madaldal ako sa mga interviews eh. Mahilig ako sa music. Music ang pinakagusto ko more than anything. Well, I like broadway, marami akong collection ng broadway soundtracks. Mahilig ako sa jazz, but I also like rock, The Killers, Rolling Stones. Ang talagang favorite ko dati yung The Who, ngayon R.D.M, The Killers, and Greenday, so halo eh. I like also rap, nung bumalik siya, si Eminem, Kanye West, wala hindi ako nag-didiscriminate eh. If the film is good, digital man siya, indie man siya, Hollywood man siya. I like rock since my UP days, Id never stop liking rock. Pag nagsusulat kasi ako, may music eh. Alam na ng subconscious ko na pag may nagpplay na music, magsusulat na ako. Di ba pag may ritual ka, youre used to it di ba? Nasa mood ka na eh, its part of the ritual. Ano pa ba, well, may pagka-bobo ako (laughs), hindi ko alam ang plate number ng kotse ko, hanggang ngayon di ko alam. First time ko to own a secondhand car nung naging scriptwriter na ako. Minsan hinihintay kong mawala sa parking lot yung ibang mga kotse para maalala ko Alin nga ba ang kotse ko dito?.

theatrical posters of the films he had wrote with, hanged in the walls, like Jose Rizal, Bagong Buwan, Dubai and others. A hush falls for a moment, and then, we started. 1. If you were to choose one medium to write for, what is it and why? RL: I would choose fiction. In novels. Pelikula kasi marami kang collaborators, marami kang katrabaho. Though ikaw ang sumulat, hindi sayo lahat. Pero pag nobela, sayo lang. Marami mang nag-comment, marami mang tumulong, pero in the end sayo pa rin ang titulo. 2. If youre not a writer, what would you be? Wala eh, kasi maaga pa, when I was six pa lang, writing na gusto ko eh. Never na akong nag-deviate from there eh. Mahirap sagutin. 3. How would you like to be remembered? RL: As a person na hindi nagging selfish sa buhay niya, sa talent niya. Na willing mag-share kung ano man ang meron siya. Hindi man ako ganon kayaman, o ganung ka sobrang husay, gusto ko may shinare ako sa ibang tao. I like people to remember me na nabuhay ako ng may silbi. 4. How does it feel when you see people reading your books? RL: Masarap. More than sa nararamdaman ko dati na when I see people watching my films, ibang-iba ngayon. You get a feeling na you are connected, to many people around, di ko sila kilala, maybe never ko na silang makikilala, pero kilala nila ako.In another way, nakakonekta ako ditto, doon. 5. Are you still conducting workshops until now? RL: Id been conducting free scriptwriting workshops since 1982 at hindi naman ako tumigil sa pag-workshop eh. In fact, in 5 years, natigil yung personal kong public workshop kasi na-exclusive ako sa ABS-CBN.

The man, who was relentless in writing earnest screenplays, admits hes more of a music fan than a movie fan, and jokingly quips of forgetting his own car plate number at his age. This provinciano from Daet, Camarines Norte, who had run away to Manila in search of paglaya, his personal freedom, clad in simple attire during our interview with him in blue collared shirt and jeans. His household member warmly welcomed us in his home in Loyola Heights, Quezon City. His home, which I described as simple as any household family can get, was distinct with portraits of showbiz stars he had worked with: some of it were in collage form. The television was on; it was Kris TV theyre watching to. There were his new novel, Amapola: Sa 65 na Kabanata, that were piled up in one corner, still in reams of plastic and ready for shipment. Nonetheless, as we sat and sip the orange juice offered to us, Ricky Lees soft voice reverberated to the quiet living room we were in. He seemed to be already downstairs, ready for us. Happy kind of sad. Four words that best describe our impression of Lee when the conversation started. The room, in which the interview took place, had vast collections of books, the small and the big, be it prose and poetry, the new and the old; theyre all shelved in our awe. There were also
