Anatomy and Physiology Marieb, E. N. Human Anatomy and Physiology. 8th Ed. 2010,CA : Benjamin / Cummings Science Publishing Some seniors recommend Tortora (which they also sell in EMO bookstore but it's in 2 volumes). My recommendation? Don't buy either. Why? Because Marieb is extremely simplified (even if the pictures are awesome and the LECTURERS DO USE PICTURES FROM HERE AND THEY OFTEN CITE THIS AS REFERENCE) and although Tortora is less simple, you're better off buying something else. I have circulated some of the e-Books among you guys so even if you need to refer to Marieb, just refer to the 7th edition one I have given some of you (trust me, content-wise, not much difference although pictures might be different). John S.P Lumley SURFACE ANATOMY: The Anatomical Basis of Clinical Examination. 4th ed, 2008; Churchill Livingstone. Elsevier Keith L Moore, Arthur F Dalley. Clinically Oriented Anatomy. 4th ed or 6thed, Lippincot, Williams & Wilkins Frank H.Netter, Atlas of HUMAN ANATOMY. 4th ed or 5thed (with student consult access of Netter Basic Science) - THIS IS RECOMMENDED SO HARD! YOU CAN USE IT FOR PBL AND MMS AND FOR STUDIES. LECTURERS ALSO USE THE PICTURES HERE SOMETIMES! I regretted not buying this all the way in Semester 1. If you want a small, pocket-friendly version, you should be able to find it in EMO (I can't remember the title but will post when I find it! YOU MUST GET A HARD COPY! IT'LL MAKE YOUR LIFE SO MUCH EASIER! Physiology

Lippincott's Illustrated Review: Biochemistry 4th ed - Champe Reference: David Hames and Nigel Hooper (2005) Biochemistry. 3rd Ed. Taylor & Francis When it comes to buying for biochemistry, I say no. Just... No. You use it for less than one semester (well, OK, you BRIEFLY revisit SOME of it in Hemato and GIT) and then what do you use it for? Plus, Lippincott's is WAYYYYYYYYY too advanced. Trust me. You're better off referring to your A-level books or the Internet (try Google Books if you want to claim that you got the sources from a book in front of a strict PBL facilitator)! Clinical skills (Skills lab)

Macleod's Clinical Examination12th ed - Douglas

Personally, I like Macleod's and I don't regret buying it BUT some of my batchmates and my own seniors told me (after I bought Macleod) that you should just get Talley's from the get-go. I hear they use this in Seremban clinical school. Some of my batchmates used this and were happier with this book. EMO sells it as well (unless they're out of stock). Communications Skills (Skills lab)

Teaching and learning communication skills in medicine, 2nded, 2005, Radcliffe Pub ,Oxford ; San Francisco DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy any communication skills textbook. Frankly, it's a waste of money and you're never going to use it. Better off borrowing from the library! If there's one thing you should know, is that books only take you so far. If you really want to improve, COMMUNICATE! (Duh!) Talk to each other, have one student pretend to come in with a problem and the other take history. Trust me, you guys will learn a lot more that way, especially if you're the patient (since you have to come up with all the signs and symptoms for the disease you're faking)! Behavioural Science Reference:

Cole, S.A., & Bird, J. (2000). The medical interview: The three-function approach. St Louis: Mosby Interesting read, but don't buy. Borrow from the library if necessary. I bet if you ask your seniors most of them (let's say at least 80%) will not have touched this book. Not to say Behavioral Science isn't important (it is, not least because there are quite a few questions that can come out) but it's something that you can apply easily in real life and is easily comprehended so you don't need a book (IMO) for that. ^_^ Embryology

Thomas W.Sadler. Langmans Medical Embryology, 11th ed, Lippincot, Williams & Wilkins Embryology is HARD. You will definitely need a book to refer to. If you buy it. life becomes that much easier for you. I didn't, and mine was a difficult road. A lot of lecturers use this book as reference for embryology (you'll have this in every system, except maybe NS and MSK).

CONFIRM WITH SENIORS JUST IN CASE! General Pathology Prescribed textbook

Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, 8th Edition (Papa Patho) - DO NOT BUY! YOU CAN FIND IT IN THE MEDICAL BOOK FILES I HAVE GIVEN SOME OF YOU! INSTEAD BUY MAMA PATHO. Trust me, you might not have time for Papa Patho, it's really thick and you won't have time to finish reading it.

Robbins Basic Pathology, 8th Edition (Mama Patho) - THIS IS JUST RIGHT! IF YOU WANT TO BUY THIS, YOU WON'T HAVE A HUGE PROBLEM. YOU CAN USE FOR NEARLY EVERY SEMESTER, ESPECIALLY FOR PBL! ;)

o o

Robbins and Cotran Review of Pathology, 3rd Edition (Baby Patho) - Don't bother. (Notices that this is like Goldilocks, except here, Mama Patho is 'just right'. General & systemic pathology J C E Underwood, 4th Ed - This is the recommended text in UK, according to Dr. Annie Tay (she's on medical leave and I don't know if you guys will ever meet her). Underwood is apparently a renowned pathologist there, but since I never referred to this book, I can't pass judgment. Consult other seniors.

I referred to my lecture notes for statistics (and my Cambridge A-Level Biology book for it). For other sources, I don't know what's good at your level. Currently am revising statistics again, and this time I found The Oxford Handbook of Medical Statistics (which I borrowed from the library; its call number is WA 39 .Pea 2011). It will have more information than you need, but it's helpful if you know what you're searching for and find from either the Table of Contents or Index. It's pricey though, so you might not want to buy it. Medical Ethics

It's 2011, one of the latest eds (certainly later than the one we currently have in the library XP). Read it if you're in a hurry and you need more time for yourself! ;) Also, some of my batchmates swear by the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Handbook-Clinical-Medicine-Medical-Handbooks/dp/0199232172/r ef=pd_sim_b_1/280-6204857-2044934

Often, it has extra content which might help you understand the subjects better (I'm thinking of my CVS, when after reading I finally could remember which diseases affected which size of arteries, etc. etc.). Try and do MOFA, sometimes questions do come out from there. Make sure you complete AIR, I'm not sure about now but historically it does contribute to your final EOS grade.

I think that's all. Any questions? Did I miss out anything? Other seniors? All the best, loves! XD -Suhaila
