A Report on SUPW in Kamal Institute of Higher Education And Advance Technology affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University

SUPW ( Socially Useful Productive Work ). The first word "Socially" means that a child who has a minimum level of education should be able to function efficiently both in social skills and work skills. The second word "Useful" stresses that the work should be useful to the child as a medium for his growth and also to the general community. The word "Productive" means that the product must be a useful entity to the existing resources of the community. Therefore socially useful productive work (SUPW) may be defined as purposive and meaningful work resulting in either goods or services which are useful to the community. Productive work has been defined by the Education Commission as "Participation in Productive work either in school, in home, in work-shop, in form, in factory or any other productive situation." The Indian Education Commission (196466) proposed the concept of "work-experience" as an essential component of general education at all stages. The main aim of the present system of education is to bridge the gulf between 'work' and 'studies'. This can be done by integrating work with the curriculum. G.G.S.I.P. University is achieving this aim by introducing work-experience as a compulsory part of B.Ed. curriculum.

The objectives of SUPW are as follows :

1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) To prepare pupils to practise and perform manual work individually and collectively. To develop in children positive attitude towards community services. To develop proper attitudes towards works. To inculcate the dignity of labour. To inculcate healthy attitude of team work. To enable students to earn-while they learn. To vanish status and class distinctions. To stress on principle of productivity.

Kamal Institute of Higher Education And Advance Technology is running B.Ed. course. At present 100 students have enrolled in the course. As per G.G.S.I.P. University syllabus SUPW is a compulsory practical of B.Ed. course. So all students are involved in the work experience. According to G.G.S.I.P. University each pupilteacher need to handle any one among the following activities.

1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8)

Printing and Designing. Clay Modelling. Art & Craft Work. Electrical Gadget. Gardening. Nutritious Meal Planning. Embroidery and Stiching. Low Cost Teaching Aid.

In Kamal Institute of Higher Education And Advance Technology studentteachers have opted Art and Craft. For Work Experience infrastructure of our institution is proper with all the facilities. We have two rooms for work-experience. One is work-experience room and other is work-experience Lab . According to NCTE norms Art and Craft rooms require steel Almirahs, Display Almirah, Drawing Boards, Revolving stools, Water Tubs, Different tools & Equipments for clay work, collage making, mask making, print making etc. Our Institute fulfill all these requirements, Also we have proper equipments for Music & Dance. We often arrange extension lecturers of some experts for our students for the full development of their artistic skills. We organise many workshops for students related to work-experience for their first hand experience. For example this year we have organised two workshops one is Art & Craft ( Cutting Papers ) and second is Block Printing. We have allotted periods in our time-table so that proper guidance can be given to the students for many activities like Register Making, Folder Making, Board Decoration, Best out of waste, Pen stand Making, Flower-Pot making etc. Our students participated in many intercollege competitions and won the Ist Prize in best out of waste at Gitarattan Institute of Advance Studies & Training, Rohini. We have given a questionnaire to the students. In which these questions are related to work-experience to know the response of students about the workexperience activities. The questionnaire include 10 questions and students need to give their answers in Yes or No. Mainly students have given positive response for all the questions. But few of them have given negative response for few items like these activities increase their workload, they need more cooperation among themselves etc. As per G.G.S.I.P. University basis of evaluation will be continuous assessment by internal examiner and there will be no external examination. The NCERT Publication on SUPW curriculum has suggested following broad points for the right evaluation system of SUPW programms. 1) 2) 3) 4) The programme may be evaluated with local experts for its improvement. A working committee may analyse the outcomes of the programmes & suggest action plans. Oral Test may be used to know the performance ability of pupils. Evaluation should be done by same teachers who handle SUPW.

6) The evaluation efforts must aim at the constructive & vocational development of SUPW.

Suggestion for Improvement

1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) There should be proper orientation and training programmes for teachers for SUPW as SUPW is an integral part of our B.Ed. curriculum. There should be proper guidance for students. Evaluation of Programme should be done at regular intervals of time throughout the academic year. The programme must have provision to involve the new development. Basis of Evaluation should be constructive & vocational development. It should not increase the work-load of pupil teachers rather it aims to refresh their mind & learn something new. Group activities should be given more importance rather than individual Activities, so that students co-operation level can be increased.
