If you live in the Northeast you are very susceptible to your BRAKE PADS or CALIPER SLIDES freezing, binding, or sticking. If you have an interest in Vermonts white-tailed deer, you will want to attend one of the annual public hearings being held in March and May by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department to discuss the deer herd. The meetings begin March 26 in Castleton and Montpelier. Wildlife biologists will share information on 2011 hunting season results as well as data gathered at biological check stations on antler measurements, ages and weights of deer taken. Winter severity data will be reviewed, and the prospects for 2012 season will be discussed. Preliminary harvest totals from the 2011 hunting seasons show Vermont hunters took 12,132 deer during archery, youth, rifle and muzzleloader seasons. Those totals will be discussed in details at the meeting and in the 2011 White-tailed Deer Report being compiled by Fish and Wildlife Department staff. We also are holding these meetings to hear from hunters and other Vermonters about deer, said Director of Wildlife Mark Scott. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has issued its annual report on the conservation practices used during 2011 at the 86 Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) around the state. The eightpage report is on the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Departments website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) under Items of Special Interest. Hunters, anglers and trappers can be credited with generously providing most of the funding for purchasing and managing Vermonts Wildlife Management Areas that are enjoyed by countless visitors, said Vermont Fish & Wildlife Commissioner Patrick Berry. These special places have been acquired for conservation of important fish and wildlife values and will be managed for those values in perpetuity. Ranging in size from 10,826-acre Steam Mill Brook WMA in Walden, Stannard, Wheelock, and Danville to a few that are less than 100 acres, Vermonts WMAs provide more than 130,000 acres of habitat for fish and wildlife as well as places for hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife watching, and hiking. Maps and descriptions of most of the WMAs are available under Maps on the website. The WMAs all provide habitat for a variety of wildlife, and some have unique habitats that could have been lost to development if they were not set aside for public ownership. Bird Mountain WMA in West Rutland, for example, was purchased in the 1970s, in part, because it historically was a nesting site for peregrine falcons. Later, when Fish & Wildlife helped return peregrines to Vermont, the falcons chose Bird Mountain as one of their first places to nest. Dead Creek WMA in Addison, Panton and Bridport has almost

Lane Construction, the team who worked on the track repave in 2010, will handle the repave project. Parity has arrived in the American Canadian Tours crate engine program. Tour teams jumped on the bandwagon with open arms in 1999 with the introduction of the mainstay Chevrolet crate engine until three years ago when the American Canadian Tour (ACT) introduced a Ford crate engine option to their racing program. The goal was to give the Late Model teams some variety, and hopefully make the racing more exciting for the fans, many of whom are die hard Ford fans. it worked and the rivalry continues. When I was asked to test the original version of the Ford crate motor, I knew it would take some time to get things sorted out. There was no perfect science without actually competing with the engines in actual race conditions, said Chris Michaud, the three-time Thunder Road Champion and original team elected to do the Ford testing. Now many of the top ACT teams have made the switch from the Chevrolet crate program to the Blue Oval including defending Tour champion Brian Hoar, 2011 runner-up Wayne Helliwell Jr. Also King of the Road champions David Pembroke and John Donahue have joined Michaud under the Ford banner. Garage Garble During a bye week in the NCWTS schedule, Cale Gale made sure to keep his driving skills fresh by competing in a March 10 ARCA race at Mobile International Speedway. Oh, and he won, too. Gale, who is embarking on his first full truck series season in 2012, led 76 of the races 203 laps in a car entered by Eddie Sharp, his NCWTS owner. Sharp also spotted for Gale and told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio earlier this week, Its tough to win in any series and any win is special. Gale won before a packed grandstand, a promotional triumph for longtime NASCAR Camping World Truck veteran Rick Crawford. The race was Crawfords largest to date as the tracks operator. A Mobile, Ala., native, who turned 27 last week, Gale will return to the wheel of his No. 33 Rheem Silverado when the series returns to action on Saturday, March 31, at Martinsville Speedway. A Southern culinary staple is teaming up with the track Too Tough to Tame. Bojangles last week announced its title sponsorship of South Carolinas only NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, the Bojangles Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. The race will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, in its traditional spot on Mothers Day weekend. What Theyre Saying The most difficult part of getting the two engines in compliance has been the different needs for different sized tracks. Engine set back requirements for the Ford, different torque levels, particularly high end torque, have been a challenge. With the help of Butler & MacMaster Engines, and a lot of co-operation from teams, we think we have reached that goal for 2012. There are some adjustments we have made over the past couple seasons, and along with the rule changes we have made going into 2012, that should help make both engine more compatible. Now it is up to the drivers and team set ups, as it should be, said Dean Gallison, the Director of Competition for the American Canadian Tour. Next Lap The cross country, coast-to-coast- trips continue for the NASCAR Cup and Nationwide crews as teams will hook and haul to Fontana CA and the Auto Club 400 on Sunday March 25, (2:30 p.m. FOX). Fontana is a wide D-shaped 2-mile oval that was constructed on 587 acre site in 1997. Its conducive to multiple grooves side-by-side racing. Kevin Harvick is the defending race champion. Jeff Gordon is the race record holder at 155.012 mph set on June 22, 1997. Kyle Busch holds the track qualifying record of 188.245 mph set in 2005.

At Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday Track Position was King all over again as race leaders Brad Keselowski along with Matt Kenseth, Brian Vickers and Martin Truex Jr. all stayed on well worn, old tires with 20 laps to go- only to pull away on the restart and win the Food City 500 Sprint Cup event. Kenseth hung on to finish second, his 10th career top-five finish at BMS. Martin Truex Jr. finished third to lead a Michael Waltrip Racing sweep of third through fifth over teammates Clint Bowyer and Brian Vickers who was in his first race of the season (one of six for MWR) since losing his ride after Red Bull Racing closed its doors at the end of last season. Keselowski led 231 laps of 500 (a career high) and the final 111. The win was back-to-back on Bristols high-banked concrete for Keselowski becoming the fourteenth driver to win back-to-back at BMS and the tenth career win for car owner Roger Penskes No 2, the others coming with Rusty Wallace and Kurt Busch. Keselowski, who prompted a NASCAR rule change regarding scoring loops after his win last fall, said all wins at Bristol come hard. Matt (Kenseth) didnt make it easy, said Keselowski. Thats his job, not to make it easy on me. He raced me hard and I raced him hard.we rubbed a little bit that is just good racing. Bayne stood fourth in the points after a fourth-place finish the previous race at Las Vegas. But the potential sponsorship deal fell through. Alas connections paid off and Food City, a company based in nearby Johnson City thats backs Bristols Cup event helped the team and an associate sponsor in Crawdads Classic Gourmet Seasonings. Then what Bayne called a friend of a friend led him to yourracecar.com, a site run by a Knoxville businessman that served as primary sponsor on Saturday and in the Bristol Nationwide race in August. Bayne responded to the newly found support by placing his No 60 on the outside pole of the Ford Eco Boost 300, leading 64 laps and finishing eighth, moving him from fourth to third in Nationwide points heading to Fontana this weekend. This week, though, Bayne will be back in the same situation.looking for sponsorship to get him to Auto Club Speedway in Southern California. Purse money helps, but its not nearly enough to pay for the entire effort, which leaves the driver of the No 60 RFR Ford once again looking to make it to another Saturday. Elliott Sadler is on a roll that, if early season results and the rebirth of his career continue, could carry him to a Nationwide Series year-end title. Saturday in the Ford Eco Boost 300 at Bristol International Speedway, Sadler driving this season for Richard Childress Racing, while questioning the decision of crew chief Luke Lambert, stayed on track during the last caution period of the race to gain valuable track position and drove away from the field for the last 27 laps for his second win in four Nationwide events this season. The win came just two weeks after Sadler broke a 14-year drought in the series at Phoenix. The Series points leader drove away from Kasey Kahne and Brad Keselowski after a restart on Lap 273 of 300 and beat Kahne to the finish line by 1.159 seconds. By TOM HERZIG lAKE PlACiD, nY norwich fans, players and coaches left Herb Brooks Arena at the lake Placid olympic Center shaking their heads after the Cadets were dealt a convincing 4-1 defeat by St. norbert in the Division iii mens hockey national semifinals Friday. the green Knights took a 1-0 lead on a powerplay goal with 1:40 remaining in the first period. the game had been a spirited standoff to that point, but things went downhill from there. St. norbert, the defending national champion after eliminating norwich in the 2011 semifinals, was rarely caught out of defensive position. When a Cadet skater did get a clear path to the goal, they were denied by freshman goaltender David Jacobson (26 saves). nevin lawler, travis Janke, tory Allen and Kyle thomas all had cracks at Jacobson without success. thomas had him down, he just wasnt able to lift it over him, Coach Mike McShane said. the green Knights went up 2-0 midway through the second period. norwich got outplayed on both sides of the goal and by periods end, it was clear the cadets were in trouble. it was very frustrating, McShane said. Part of it was their strong defense and their goalie made some strong saves, but we never really got anything going. We had a lot of quality chances early, but then they got the power play goal it was a nice goal and they got a jump from it. it was our worst game of the year. St. norberts Seth Soley put the game away with a power-play goal with captain Shawn Baker in the box at 4:56 of the final period. norwich avoided a shutout with Blake Forkeys goal on the rebound of a blast from Pier-olivier Cotnoir with 5:27 remaining. St. norbrt scored an empty goal for the 4-1 final. they had a pretty good forecheck and they moved the puck well, Cadet goalie Parker Carroll (19 saves) said of the winners. there were no big plays that we did, no kid blocking a shot or

Maybe we just played a better team tonight. norwich (24-4-2) reached the Frozen Four for the third consecutive season. the Cadets won the national title in 2010 by defeating St. norbert in the longest game in Division iii tournament history.

Saturday night the green Knights successfully defended their title with a 4-1 victory over oswego (nY) State. the game was very similar to the norwich contest. Angles to the net for puck carriers down the wings were cut off, passes were deflected and numerous shots were blocked and the green Knights played with a lead most of the time. in the finals, Cody Keefer scored a hat trick. Freshman goalie David Jacobson, who totaled 55 saves in the two games, had 23 saves and was named Most outstanding Player. the win was St. norberts 13th victory in their last 14 nCAA tournament games, giving the De Pere, Wisconsin school its third nCAA crown since 2008. they also became first team to win back-to-back titles since Middlebury College won three in a row from 2004 to 2006.

DAVID HEATH PHOTO Last Saturday the Twinfield Trojans boys basketball team took on the Danville Indians for the Vermont State Division IV Championship for the second year in a row. Last year the final score was Twinfield 64 Danville 58. It was a determined Trojans team that took the court at the Barre Aud taking a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Indians were unable to deter the Trojans scoring bringing a 26-22 half time score with the Trojans leading. After the halftime break Danville found a new strength outscoring Twinfield 16-12 to bring a 38-36 third period down by two. Still determined as ever the Trojans ran a 23 to 16 scoring run to take the State Division IV Championship. Scoring for Twinfield were # 21 David Codling with 17 points, # 4 Avery Whitcomb 15 points and # 20 Chad Copeland 12 points. Danville was all over Twinfields high scorer Copeland who had 2 fouls half way threw the first quarter and sat out the rest of the first and all the second quarters to insure his play in the last half. He ended up with just two fouls. Danvilles top scorers were # 14 Tony Burrington with 20 points (14 points in the second half) and # 25 Kyle Johnson 14 points. Twinfield ends their season with a 21-2 record and Danville a 17-6 record.

High noon last Saturday, the Twinfield girls basketball team played Proctor for the Vermont State Division IV Championship at the Barre Aud. Proctor jumped to a 13-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and out scored Twinfield 20 -10 in the second to have earned a halftime 33-18 lead. Beginning the second half with a renewed spirit Twinfield out scored Proctor 20-12 to narrow the lead to 38-45 to end the third quarter. Unable to slow Proctors scoring and with their main players finding themselves in foul trouble Twinfield lost 61-52. Scoring for Twinfield were Bryanna duPont with 20 points and Kaitlin Lyford with 10 points. Proctors lead scorers were Mikaya Tanner with 25 points, Mikaya McCormack 16 points and Megan Carter 10 points. Twinfield was near perfect from the foul line hitting on 9 of there 10 attempts. Proctor had 35 attempts at the foul line hitting on just 22.
