The problem and its background Introduction In todays health care climate, reduced insurance coverage, constrains on access

to care, and increased cost of perception and services are the norm. People are living shorter than ever before and chronic disease and HIV/AIDS are on the rise. So people are becoming increasingly interested in preventing strategies and holistic approaches to health, such as eating a nutritionally sound diet, maintaining fitness, and reducing stress. Interest in Natural treatment and products continue to grow. (Roth etal,2004) Herbal medicine serves as a reference for pharmacists, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, assisting them in the provision of these medicines to members of the public. The term herbal medicines or herbal medicines product (or less frequently, herbal remedy) is used to describe a marketed product, whereas herbal ingredient refers to an individual herb that is present on a herbal medicine. (barnes,2007)

Herbal medicine continues to be a popular healthcare choice of the general public not only for health maintenance and well-being , minor ailments, chronic conditions and serious chronic disease, but also for the enhancement of function or process, such as the ginkgo biloba products for memory enhancement.

In our todays world there is a lot of breakthrough in technology and most people have change their lifestyle and adjusted to what this new technology brings to them. One of the changes that individuals have made is the medical world. A lot of individual use medicine rather than herbs today as compared to the past. Many individuals view the drugs as being more effective than the herbs. In cases this view can be true while to other it might not be true.

Research and studies made by the academe, industries and government confirm the effectively of certain herbs in the treatment of disease. Many of

these herbs also proved to have health benefits in addition to their curative value. The Philippine departments of health, after thorough evaluation and years of clinical trials have endorsed 10 herbal plants as alternative medicines of various diseases ranging from asthma, hypertension to diabetes.

As members of the medical team, we need to evaluate their knowledge on the use of these herbs in order for us to know if the respondents are properly using them and eventually make them aware of its importance. Through this study our group will be able o know the effects of herbal plants used by the respondents and its implication to the nursing profession.

Statement of the problem This study will describe he awareness and utilization of the herbal medicine among the residents of Brgy. San Isidro Camiling Tarlac: Specially, this study will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of: 1.1 Age? 1.2 Educational background? 1.3 Monthly income? 1.4 Religion 1.5 Employment status? 2. What herbal medicines are being used? 3. What is the awareness of the respondents in terms of: a. Indication? b. Dose? c. Side Effects? d. Preparation? e. Frequency? 4. What factor most influences the respondents to use herbal medicines as perceived by the respondents? 5. Is there a difference in the level of awareness and utilization of the herbal medicine based on the profile of the respondents?

6. What is te implication of the study to the nursing practice? Null Hypothesis The level of awareness and utilization of the respondents do not differ significantly with respect to their profile variables. Scope and Delimitation of the study The study is focused on determining the level of awareness and utilization of herbal medicines that are commonly used by some residents of Brgy. San Isidro Camiling Tarlac ages 35-55 years old. This will determine the factor that mostly affects them in using herbal medicines as alternative therapy and how they differ based in the profile variables. The most accurate way to gather s to know how the respondents perceived in using herbal medicines, through this the researchers will have an idea who among these individuals is using herbal medicines as their choice of treatment. Significant of the studies The study will be conducted determining the awareness and utilization of herbal medicines of some residents in Brgy. San Isidro Camiling Tarlac. The

findings wll significantly improve the quality of the promotions and restoration of health and provide benefits to the following: To the residents of the community, the study will inform residents about herbal medicines and how they will be accepted or unaccepted as alternative therapy. To the public health nurses, it also provides opportunity for them to broaden their knowledge about herbal medication and be able to provide health information on the safe, effective and appropriate use of these herbal medicines. To the future researchers, this would serve as a reference and guide as to what variable may be comprehended while conducting another study related to this topic. Definition of Term The following terms are defined to have a clearer understanding of some difficult concepts presented in this study. They are defined as used in the study.

Alternative Medicine. This an approach that is used to replace traditional treatment and therapy. It may include swallowing or applying herbal substances, adhering to a special diet, or a combination of approaches that are not usually recommended by a doctor who practices conventional medicine. Awareness. Defined a knowledge, understanding, appreciation, recognition, attention, perception, consciousness acquaintance, enlightenment, sensibility, realization, familiarity mindfulness and cognizance. Conducted. Barangay San Isidro Camiling Tarlac. This is the place where the study was conducted. Community. This is the group of interacting organisms sharing populated environments. Community Health Nursing. This is a field of nursing that is a blend of primary BSN course of CLDH-EI. Demographic Profile. This refers to the personal information of the respondents which could affect their level of awareness in herbal medicine.

Dependent Variable. A variable which depends on one or more variables which may control it or relate to it; in other words that may be seen as a function of another variable. Herbal Medicines. Is the study or use of medicinal herbs to prevent and treat disease and ailments or to promote health and healing. A drug or preparation made from a plant or plants and used for any of such purposes. Influences. The power to affect, control or manipulate something or someone; the ability to change the development of fluctuate, fluctuating things such as conduct, though or decisions; the status of being able to dictate the actions or behaviors of an object or person; moral or political power over a person or group; ascendancy. Independent Variable. This is typically the variable representing the value being manipulated or changed and the dependent variable is the observed result of the independent variable being manipulated. Utilization. Is a process for monitoring the use, delivery, and cost-effectiveness of services.
