The Tempest Adaptation

The Tempest. Peoples screams and thunder claps fill the air; the boat rocking, the waves trying to eat up the boat. Everyone jumps overboard, shouting, screaming and praying: a total chaos.

* * * Father, why did you cause that tempest, doesnt you r heart ache to think of all those who suffered from it? Miranda came up running to Prospero, after seeing the ship rocking helplessly in the midst of the rough sea. Miranda dear, now the time has come when I will reveal your past, and mine, Prospero explains to Miranda, his dumb daughter who has never seen the real world of mankind before. Twelve years ago your dad was the duke of Milan. I was drawn to the study of magic, and I let the control of the government slide a bit. My brother Antonio, whom placed so much trust on, allied himself with the king of Naples, Alonso, and sent us both away from Milan in a carcass of a boat; they dare not kill us because the people of Milan loved me so much. Some food we had and some fresh water that a noble Neapolitan, Gonzalo, out of his charity did gives us.(I.ii) I have conjured up the tempest for a reason, if you were wondering. My enemies were in that boat and now wrecked in this island; if I use this opportunity well then our fates will change and well have a much brighter future ahead. Oh father, you are much more that the poor man who lives in a cave in this isle; more to know did never meddle with my thoughts (I.ii), Miranda says to her father, and slowly falls to sleep.

* * * Ariel! Come here, Ariel! Prospero shouts out. All hail, great master! I come to answer they best pleasure; bet to fly, to swim, to dive into the fire, to ride on the curld clouds, to thy strong bidding task Ariel and his quality (I.ii), a white, delicate spirit answers Prosperos calls. I have carried out the tempest just as you ordered, down to the last detail. I have washed them ashore in separate groups across the island, just as you ordered. Ariel, well done; you have done exactly as I ordered, but there is more work to be done. There is more work? Remember you had promised me many times before that you will give me my freedom back, but you still havent performed yet. Have you forgotten the torture I freed you from? You were once the servant of the evil witch, Sycorax, who was arrived in this island when she was pregnant. You were too delicate to carry out her

orders, so she locked you up in a hollow pine tree for twelve years. During those years she gave birth to her baby born of an old hag, Caliban, and died; it was me and my magic that saved you. If you complain more again, Ill split an oak tree and lock you up in it for twelve years! I will do my spiriting gently, without complaining, Ariel says, her head hung in shame.

* * * Damn you, Prospero! Work, work, work, all you make me do is work! an ugly monster looking creature curses to himself, holding a bunch of logs on his back. I, Caliban, am the slave of the owner of the isle, when it was actually supposed to be inherited from my mother to me! Oh, dear fellow whose name is Caliban, you seem to be in pain. Here, have a dose of this; hundred percent guarantee that it will make you feel better, a drunken sort-of voice says up from behind Caliban. Caliban turns around and sees two laughing men; a bottle of wine is, then pushed into his mouth by the one whose face was as red as a tomatos. Oh what is this that is so divine? Caliban says, and then looks at the red- faced man. Thats a brave god and bears celestial liquor. I will kneel to thee. Ill show thee every fertile inch o th island; and I will kiss thy foot; I prithee, be my god! (II.ii) Oh ho, then a butler, now a god, heh Stephano? the skinny man says to the fat, red- faced one. The power of wine is unbelievable; made you the companion of the god, heh Trinculo! Stephano replies back to Trinculo. Ill also make you the king of this island, and give you a beautiful wife; but, you will need to kill Prospero first, the wicked owner of this island. His power lies in his books.. Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo start to make plans to rule the island. This will I tell my master (III.ii), whispers an invisible Ariel to herself and flies off.

* * * Oh, my son Ferdinand, where are you! Curse the sea for separating me from him! a man with a red cloak and golden crown shouts out to the trees. My lord Alonso, please dont give up hope, we will all help you find your son, an old, kind- looking man assures Alonso. Sir, some strange drowsiness taking over me; can we all stop and rest for some time? Prithee, no more: thou dost talk nothing to me (II.i), Alonso says irritably. Everyone then walks in awkward silence, with Gonzalo having trouble walking.

Maybe you are right, Gonzalo, I have that drowsy feeling too; I reckon we should stop for a while, Alonso agrees, yawning. My dear brother, Sebastian, and Antonio, will you please guard me and Gonzalo while we take a short power nap? The two other men nod their heads; Prospero and Gonzalo then immediately fall asleep. Opportunity is knocking for you, and in my imagination I see a crown dropping onto your head.(II.i) Do you get what I am saying, Sebastian?, the older looking man says to the other one. Methinks I do. I remember you did supplant your brother Prospero , Sebastian replies back, an evil smile creeping along him face. Thy case, dear friend, shall be my predecent; as thou gotst Milan, Ill come by Naples (II.i). Draw your sword; well both finish Alonso and Gonzalo off and go back to Naples, where Ill take my place on the throne! Ariel, who was flying by and hears all this, shouts into Alonsos and Gonzalos ears and wakes then up, forcing Sebastian and Antonio to draw their swords back. I heard a humming, sir; it will be best if we quit this place and move on, Gonzalo comments and starts to walk. I agree, Alonso says, and the four start walking again. Prospero my lord shall know what I have done: So, king, go safely on to seek thy son (II.i), a hidden Ariel quietly says to herself.

* * * Miranda and Prospero were walking along the seashore when they both spot a handsome young man. I might call him a thing divine, for nothing natural I ever saw so noble (I.ii)! Miranda exclaims. You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, plus you speak my language! I am Ferdinand, prince of Naples, and I am here because of the recent tempest. Anyways, if you are a maid, Ill make you my wife and the Queen of Naples! Ariel comes up to Prospero, worried and exhausted. Ariel, these two have fallen in love at first sight but I need to cause trouble between them otherwise they will never appreciate the value of their love, Prospero whispers to Ariel. Ariel nods her head. Ahem, young man; I can see you have big plans with my daughter but I wont approve this: you will be work for me instead, Prospero declares out loud. Miranda gives an angry look to her father and rushes off, crying. Ferdinand looks at her going, with the look of utmost sadness in his eyes. It pains to see my daughter like this, but Im doing this for their good, Prospero says, after sending Ferdinand off to do collect logs. Tell me Ariel, why do you look so worried?

Oh master, I just saw Caliban and two other drunkards from your enemies ship planning to kill you and take over the isle! And, your evil brother and the kings brother are both planning to kill the king and Gonzalo so they can take over Naples! Ariel reported, hurriedly. Ha! Those three fools wont even be able to scratch me, but Ill make sure they will get punished for thinking such a thing. And I really do wonder when my brother will get rid of his mean ways; I need to teach him and my other foes a lesson, Prospero replies. Now go, disguise yourself as a harpy and go to back my enemies. Ariel flies off towards the forest, mixing in with the white clouds and blue skies.

* * * Oh, sir, I would be favored if you will allow us to rest for a while; my bones are sure aching, Gonzalo spoke up, panting. They had cleared the forest and now were walking midst mountains and valleys. I dont blame you, Im myself so tired too, Alonso replies. Sebastian and Antonio looked at each other; they both knew that this was the next perfect opportunity to murder the king and his loyal courtier. Oh! Alonso exclaims, as a table of food appears in front of them. Food, wonderful food; I am going to dig in! Alonso reached out to the table when it transformed into a harpy. Alonso screamed, and the other three rush over to meet their utmost surprise. You three are men of sin! the harpy roared, pointing at Alonso, Sebastian and Antonio. Listen, fools! I carry out the Fates orders; my job is to remind you how the three of you stole Prosperos throne and threw him and his child in the merciless seas. The higher powers- delaying their punishment, not forgetting about it- have taken away your son away from you, Alonso! Ill stay with you every step of your way; the only way to protect yourselves from the high powers is for you to be sincerely sorry in your hearts for what you have done and live innocent lives from this time forward! A curtain of black mist whirls around the harpy and it vanishes as soon as it came. Alonso, Sebastian and Antonio stare into space with pin-drop silence while Gonzalo falls asleep, not really shaken up with what just happen. Bravely the figure of this harpy hast thou performd, my Ariel; a grace it had, devouring:my charms work and these mine enemies are all knit up in their distractions; they are now in my power , a hiding Prospero says proudly out to the sky, who had seen everything. And in these fits I leave them, while I visit young Ferdinand, whom they suppose is drownd, and his and mine loved darling.(III.iii)

* * * Prospero made way to Miranda and Ferdinand talking secretly somewhere near his shelter-cave.

Miranda spotted her father and hurriedly stood up. Father, I can explain, I- No explanation needed darling, he said, smiling at the both of them. Ferdinand, my boy, I was testing your love for Miranda, and you have passed remarkably well. I have seen how much you both love each other and I would love to see you both together. Ferdinand, I give you my daughter and my blessings for your upcoming marriage. Ferdinand beamed at Miranda and she came rushing into his outspread arms; it was the most joyful moment of their lives. They were allowed to marry; the news filled them with a warm, blissful feeling in their hearts. I love to see them like this, Prospero says happily to Ariel, who is invisibly hovering beside him. Oh, I forgot! Those three idiots are planning to kill me by burning my books! Ariel, go quickly and set hunter dogs after them, go! Yes master, Ariel humbly replies. Then, after a few minutes, there were sounds of howling and screaming coming from a distance. Prospero smiles. Listen, theyre howling, Ariel says, flying down towards Prospero. At this hour lie at mercy all mine enemies: shortly shall all my labors end, and thou shalt have freedom: for a little follow, and do me service, Prospero says. Go fetch my other enemies, and Gonzalo. I think my foes have now realized their mistake; go, free them from their stunned state and bring them here.

* * * Gonzalo, Alonso, Sebastian and Antonio all follow mysterious music coming from something unknown: Ariel was guiding them towards Prospero. Is that Prospero, that man over there? Alonso asked and then ran over to investigate. Yes, it is me, the Prospero whom you had wronged some years before, Prospero says and hugs Alonso. But I have forgiven you. He goes over to Gonzalo and hugs him too. You, Gonzalo, are more honorable then I can say. I thank you from my heart for all being kind enough to provide me and my child with the necessities to lives, as well as my spell books, Prospero say gratefully and then walks over to Sebastian and Antonio. Sebastian, even after being a man who had supported Antonio to throw me off my throne, I forgive you, Prospero says, with a hint of distaste and then turns to look at Antonio. For you, most wicked sir, whom to call brother would infect my mouth, I do forgive thy rankest fault; all of them; and require my dukedom of thee, which thou must restore. (V.i)

Oh, I will Prospero, I will; I have realized how unethical it was to steal your title, Antonio says, his head hung in shame. You are truly great to forgive me after all I have done. Oh, I think so too, Sebastian agreed. Me too, Alonso added on. Now I so wish that I didnt wrong you before, I would have not lost my beloved son! Oh, Alonso, dont worry. Your son is alive and well in my cave- house, and hes madly in love with my daughter, Prospero said, pointing at his cave. Go, meet him. Its a sin to keep a child away from his parent, which I dont want to commit. Go! Alonso runs, skips and walks all at the same, very eager to reunite with his son again. Gonzalo, Sebastian and Antonio follow. Ferdinand and Miranda were playing chess in the corner of the room, and Alonso rushes towards them. Father, oh father, you are alive! Ferdinand says, as soon as he spotted his father running towards him. Alonso gave a bear hug to his son. Oh, Ferdinand, you are alive too! I have cursed the seas for no reason; they have been merciful and reunited us together. Gonzalo, Sebastian and Antonio also entered and there was chattering in the dark, gloomy cave. O, wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How bounteous mankind is! O brave new world, that has such people int! (V.i) Miranda says, astonished that there could be more living people except for her father and Ferdinand. Oh, so you are Prosperos daughter, Alonso says, noticing the Miranda for the first time. Well, my son seems to have chosen you as his bride and I agree with him; you sure are a lovely maiden. Now, if only we could go back to Naples; I would have arranged the grandest wedding for you both, grandest of the century! Sadly, the boat is broken and lost somewhere between the vast seas. Alonso, the ships all right, it is just hidden. Well head back to Naples and Milan tomorrow morning then, to get things right as soon as possible, Prospero replies. For now, everybody should go to sleep.

* * * Ariel, go stop the hunter dogs; those three idiots have gotten their punishment, Prospero demands. Now, Ariel, you have to make sure that my journey back will be a smooth one, and thats it. That is your last order you have to follow Ariel; you will be as free as the air after that. Thank you master, for freeing me; Ill make sure that Ill follow your last command the best I can, Ariel says, then flies off into the dark sky, humming a happy tune.

* * * The wind was blowing south, navigating the boat to its destination. Prospero was deep in thought at the boat edge. He then took his books from within his cloak and dropped them down the deep, blue sea. Down you go my dear books, you have served me well. I do not need you anymore; my enemies have realized their mistake and have given me my dukedom back but most importantly, my daughter is soon going to be married to a man who she loves and will be happy with for her whole life: her happiness is mine, Prospero says, watching the books tumble along with the waves and slowly sink down to the sea-bed. Prospero! Come here; tell me your story of how you were saved, how you lived in that deserted isle and how you met us here! Alonso asked, with Gonzalo, Sebastian and Antonio following behind. Well its long, but I reckon Ill finish before we reach, Prospero replied. Miranda, Ferdinand! Come, well all gather around and listen to my story! Prospero set off telling his story enthusiastically, with all the others watching him with interest. Prospero had managed to make his foes his friends, find a husband for his daughter and get his dukedom back, all in a few hours.

* * * The trio Caliban, Trinculo and Stephano now realized that Prospero had left the isle, so they all were drinking wine and planning on Stephanos new reign. My lord, there is a cave on the far end of the beach, and one near the forest.. Caliban was telling all about the island and places where he thought the ruling- area should be built. Trinculo and Stephano, both drunk, were laughing and arguing with Calibans ideas. Bad or good, idiotic or wise, everyone ended happily.
