Congestion causes a huge cost to the local economy. An extra junction (7a) would massively boost jobs in Harlow. The cost of an extra junction is small, compared to other schemes. In a sign that the new Coalition Government will look positively at the scheme, the Transport Minister admitted that Harlow was originally designed for a motorway to the west, not to the east. He said that Sir Frederick Gibberds plans hoped that the M11 would be built on the other side of the town. The Minister also admitted that congestion in Harlow was terrible, and hinted at a victory for local
Winnies party
ST ELIZABETHS Centre had a cause for celebration last week as their eldest resident celebrated her 90th birthday on Friday. Winnie Cunliffe originally came to the Much Hadham epilepsy centre from Lancashire in December 1938 more than 70 years ago. In those days everyone slept in dormitories and were given their own job to help run the centre. Winnie used to look after young children with epilepsy. Today, the 105 residents live in modern bungalows with en-suite facilities and enjoy a programme of activities to ensure that they all live life to the full.

people, when he said that Harlow is well-placed for investment when the economic situation eases. He acknowledged that the debate was timely, as the new Government would only prioritise schemes (such as this one), which promote economic growth. In a generous move, Essex County Council has agreed to pay for a full business case for the scheme, at a cost of over half a million pounds. This will kickstart the new junction, so that Harlow is much more likely to secure funding when the economy has recovered. Harlow Council and the Essex Federation of Small Businesses also threw their weight behind the plans. In a statement, they said that an extra junction would unlock Harlows potential and help regenerate the town centre. Were not there yet, but we took a small step forward this week, and are closer than ever to cutting congestion in our town.

Wedding planners
STAFF at L J Sheppard Volkswagen in Bishops Stortford helped a couple with a rather unusual request. On Monday May 10, Mark and Kellie Peachey visited the showroom not to borrow a car, but to borrow two members of staff to witness their 11am wedding at the neighbouring registry office. Mark and Kellie, of Bishops Stortford, kept their nuptials a secret from family and friends and having arrived at the registry office with no witnesses, were relying on the staff at L J Sheppard to support their special day. Sheppards sales manager Neil Curtis and service manager Richard Stovell not only witnessed the wedding, but took photos of the couple and chauffeured them across town in a Volkswagen Eos. Mark and Kellie said: Thank you to Neil and Richard for making our day that little bit different, but special at the same time. We are both so grateful for what Neil and Richard did for us. Mr Curtis said: Mark and Kellies request came as a complete surprise. Its not the usual type of enquiry we receive in the showroom! It was an absolute privilege to witness Mark and Kellies wedding. Kellie looked beautiful and it was a pleasure to be able to support their special day. L J Sheppard Volkswagen is part of the long established and family owned Vindis Group, formed of VW, Audi, Skoda and Bentley centre all in the East of England.
