The project was about replacing Denver's Stapleton Airport with Denver international Airport.

After the experienced growth Stapleton airport has witnessed, the need for a new facility arrised to encompass the th insufficient airport capacity and the rise of enplaned passenger market. Being Given an importance as 5 busiest airport in USA with an anticipated 66 million passengers and a critical importance through which delays in Denver caused major delays in other airports, urging officials to consider the construction of the new Denver international Airport DIA . The project comprised a runway master plan that called for ten 12,000 foot and two 16,000 foot runways that could handle more aircrafts per hour during instrumental times. It called for four concourses each with 60 gates only 3 built initially and original plans called for a train beneath building and concourses. It featured a baggage handling system to deliver 600000 bags/hr from dozens of gates . Project Location: It is located in Denver which is 500 miles away from major cities. The site selected was 3 square mile area 18 miles northeast of Denver business district and required an agreement signature with Adams County to limit noise through creating buffer zones around residential areas. Cost / time / performance: -Initiation stage: The project was initiated when It was realized in 1974 that Stapleton wasnt able to handle necessary traffic .In Year 1985 it was agreed to build the project with an estimated cost for 1.2 billion $. Project Design : 1991, soliciting bids. In 1989 After passing the airport referendum the project estimate was 1.7 billion $. -Planning : In October 1993 , DIA was 1.1 billion over budget to become 2.7 billion and postponed to December 1993 due to scope changes and unfinished parts ex: fire system. It was further due to October march 19 due to baggage handling system errors and further postponed t reach a cost of 3.7 billion in June 1994 It was further delayed to be handed in 1995 with a cost of 5 billion $ .The major causes were problems like poor project management (poor coordination and planning), construction problems (repairing cracks ,holes, tiles, falsified test data , fraud..) , estimation errors (25 % more equipment only when runways are 6 times longer), baggage handling system designed 3 years after construction, 2500 design changes. Staff : Selecting project managers / contractors / consultants -Execution: In 1994 designer of baggage handling system re-examination, Airline opened on February 1995 resources: construction labor/engineers / architects equipment and materials : concrete , masonary , metals , carpentary , protection , doors windows , finishes , furnishings sitwork...etc hightech systems : computers..etc ( baggage handling Requirements Construction types :Road construction: runway / building construction: concourses Funding : airline agreement to purchase lease ( EA ,continental ) Project Management team Design Contracts / general contractors and sub contractors/ agreements from stakeholders Project Novelty: The project is a platform project seeing it worked on an existing product line which is the airport construction to the existing customers which are passengers that use airlines to travel in the USA. It mainly focused on upgrading the existing product line by developing a larger airport that can accommodate the higher enplaned passengers and the rapid growth in the airline industry Technology: Seeing it was a construction project , the technology was low technology at the time . the roof design used a conventional method using 800 000 tons of steel with Teflon coated glass fiber. The baggage handling system was of high technology using 100 computers , 56 lazer scanner, conveyor belts and thousand of motorssystem could deliver 600 000 bags / hr, being unconventional at the time. Complexity : The level of the project complexity was array. It includes systems within systems. Different concourses , runways , baggage systems & design integrated as a whole. The baggage system on its own is one system.

Pace : Construction projects are considered time critical seeing they have specific deadlines to meet and penalties for crossing that deadline / day.
