Unit Plan: Chemical Bonding

Essential Questions
What is Chemical bonding?

Goal
For each type of bonding (covalent, ionic and metallic), you are required to: explain what it is give an example show bonding at an atomic level

Audience
Your teacher, fellow students and/or the audience of YouTube, if you choose to upload it there.

Product
Some form of digital media that is no longer than three minutes in duration. iMovie, Movie Maker, VoiceThread, SlideShare and PowerPoint are all examples of software you might choose to create your product.

Learning Outcomes
4.1 Ionic Bonding Describe the ionic bond as the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. Describe how ions can be formed as a result of electron transfer. Deduce which ions will be formed when elements in groups 1, 2 and 3 lose electrons. Deduce which ions will be formed when elements in groups 5, 6 and 7 gain electrons. State that transition elements can form more than one ion. Predict whether a compound of two elements would be ionic from the position of the elements in the periodic table or from their electronegativity values. State the formula of common polyatomic ions formed by nonmetals in periods 2 and 3. Describe the lattice structure of ionic compounds. 4.2 Covalent Bonding Describe the covalent bond as the electrostatic attraction between a pair of electrons and positively charged nuclei. Describe how the covalent bond is formed as a result of electron sharing. Deduce the Lewis (electron dot) structures of molecules and ions for up to four electron pairs on each atom.

State and explain the relationship between the number of bonds, bond length and bond strength. Predict whether a compound of two elements would be covalent from the position of the elements in the periodic table or from their electronegativity values. Predict the relative polarity of bonds from electronegativity values Predict the shape and bond angles for species with four, three and two negative charge centres on the central atom using the valence shell electron pair repulsion theory (VSEPR). Predict whether or not a molecule is polar from its molecular shape and bond polarities. Predict whether or not a molecule is polar from its molecular shape and bond polarities. Describe the structure of and bonding in silicon and silicon dioxide. 4.4 Metallic Bonding Describe the metallic bond as the electrostatic attraction between a lattice of positive ions and delocalized electrons. Explain the electrical conductivity and malleability of metals. NETS for Students 2. Communication and Collaboration Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats. Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems.

Assessment Rubric
Level 4 Aesthetics Content has a logical, coherent flow. The layout/structure of the digital document maintains absolute attention to the content of the product The layout, use of colour, font selection, text enhancements, imagery etc enhance comprehension of content and suitability of the purpose and audience. The colours, layout, shape and form show harmony and balance. Content has a logical, coherent flow Function The purpose of the digital product is clearly stated. The digital product Is suitable, appropriate and focussed for the purpose, it conveys information easily and shows imagination and care. The information is accurate or appropriate. The intended audience is clearly stated. The digital product is designed for its intended audience. Content Ionic, covalent, and metallic bonding are all demonstrated in the digital product. Each type of bond is correctly described and the exchange or sharing of electrons is evident. The digital product accurately shows how electrons can be shared unequally in covalent bonds to create polarity in molecules. De-localized electrons are explained for metallic bonding.

The digital product is designed for its intended audience. The purpose of the digital product is stated. The digital product is appropriate for the purpose. Some of the information is accurate, appropriate and focussed. The intended audience is stated. The student has attempted to design the digital product for its intended audience. The purpose and the audience of the digital product is unclear. The product is not suitable for the purpose or for the audience. Information is inaccurate, inappropriate and/or is difficult to access. The product is inefficient or hard to read.

demonstrated in the digital product. Each type of bond is correctly described and the exchange or sharing of electrons is evident.

There is a coherent flow of content The layout/structure of the digital product is of an acceptable standard Some of selections of colours, layout, fonts shape and form are mostly harmonious and well balanced.

Ionic, covalent, and metallic bonding are all demonstrated in the digital product.

The layout and the finish shows little care The digital document does not flow. There is little or inappropriate use of design features. Few of the elements of layout, use of colour and text enhancements enhance readability. Some of selections of colours, layout, fonts shape and form are suitable for balance and harmony.

Ionic, covalent, and metallic bonding are not demonstrated effectively in the digital product.
