COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops
Of all the quotations that I have read, the quotation above is my most favorite. It awakens my senses. It is the one that strikes direct to my heart. Honestly, I am not 100% sure taking up this course; I just followed what my mother has told me. But Im 101% sure that I dont regret obeying her. My journey in the College of Education, the experiences, the memories,- these are all immeasurable. Being a teacher really requires passion and commitment. Passion for your students, for your work, for credibility for your stand in the society; and a life-long commitment for continuous professional growth. So if you do not have enough consistencies, stop dreaming being a teacher. My experiences on the field taught me what a teacher really is, and I would sum it up through this poem:
What a Teacher is? As always said, it is teaching, The noblest among the professions, herein For without teachers, there wouldnt be Any Professionals in this society Which means a teacher does an important role And to successfully do it, has always been his goal Its never tired to give his best, In classroom is where he productively nest And what made teaching a distinct, profession, Is arduous commitment and life-long compassion These are qualities a teacher possesses Qualities that brings him to success So now it made me realize, What a teacher does and how its like Now I clearly understand What a teacher is, and How he stands, For a teacher teach whole heartedly, A teacher acts with dignity He doesnt fail risking his credibility

Cause a teacher leaves a living legacy

My favorite quotation and the poem that I made complements, it just means that teachers are the most important professionals. For teachers hones personality, and develops intelligence not only of one but a number of students in the community. And in the future, I will be one, which is an ASSURANCE!!!

Origin and History The SOUTHVILLE 1 NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL with a postal address at Blk. 54-55 Southville 1 Housing Project, Niugan, Cabuyao, Laguna, is in its fifth year of operation which was officially opened on June 20, 2006 as one of the annexes of Cabuyao National High School. Permit to operate as independent national high school was given on September 12, 2006 signed by Dr. George R. Garma, then Regional Director, per DECS Order No. 5 series 1989/DECS Service Manual 2000. The school caters high school students whose families were informal settlers along PNR Right-of-Way in Cabuyao, Laguna, City of Manila and Makati City. These families were relocated on a consolidated s ite located at Brgy. Niugan, Marinig, and Banay-banay in Cabuyao, Laguna, prior to Memorandum Order No. 46 issued by former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The National Housing Authority as the head/lead agency for project implementation undertook the site or land research, which identified a strategic location considered as most liable for intended beneficiaries. The site can accommodate one thousand one hundred sixty eight families. The government has embarked on the development of the railway system and launched the Southrail Development Project (SDP) which aims to restore, rehabilitate and modernize the existing, dilapidated and deteriorating tracks. Cognizant of the importance of providing efficient mass transport system to boost development, there is also a crucial concern on the welfare of informal settlers. The school started with thirteen teachers including the Tic, borrowed from the neighboring high schools namely Cabuyao NHS, Gulod NHS, and Pulo NHS. With its plantila, the school now has fifty six national teachers and two local teachers, four nonteaching personnel a full-pledged principal with a designation of Principal 1. Its initial population was eight hundred forty seven (847) and presently it increasing to two thousand three hundred fifty one (2351). Type of School The Southville 1 National High School is a comprehensive national high school with complete year level from first year to fourth year. Curriculum Guided and policies under the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) are being implemented from third year to fourth year. The first and second level has a new curriculum being implemented, the Understanding by Design (UbD).

Pamantasan ng Cabuyao

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
The BEC advocates on student-centered policy where teachers are facilitator of the lessons and students freedom of choice on the learning style provided it does not affect the flow of the lesson. The UbD anchors on the principles of learning by doing. The use of the mother tongue for instructions cannot be avoided especially for the lower sections for better understanding and for closure of the lesson.

Weekly Narration of My Teaching Experience

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
This is my first week as a student teacher. Whew!!!... I dont know why but at first, I really felt nervous. My veins seem stiff, my hands and feet gone cold and its like Im out of my mind. Thanks, for my critic teacher, Maam Muya, who had been there behind me, supporting me. From her, Ive learned to face the class confidently, to act as if you know everything, that you could answer, every students question. I am very thankful having her as my critic teacher. With her, I know that Ill be well-guided and properly trained. For her actions speaks of her as a teacher. S1NHS implements the UBD Strategy, I think; this is one of the reasons why in front of the class, I seem to be out of the world, because Im not familiar with UbD, so I dont how to teach using this strategy. But as what Ive said my mentor has always been there to support me. She taught the important points of UbD, it phases and showed me how to use it and little while gained in understanding about it. This week was actually my adjustment period, my orientation for every task that I must perform. In my first week, Reality knocks in, I am already a teacher, and I must act like one. Dec. 12 14 (Week 2) One thing learned about UBD is that it is divided into phases. The phases are Explore, Firm-up, Deepen and Transfer. And each phase could take 10-20 days just to make sure that the learners could do the expected tasks and learn what they supposed to learn. My critic is already on the Deepen Phase, so I did continue this Phase following the UBD Learning Guide. Third Grading is all about Poetry, so in this Phase I need to make the students realize the importance or significance of poem in their lives. They should be able to connect their on real life, so what I did for this week, I presented the poem Ballad of a Mothers Heart and let the students decipher it meaning. I asked their own interpretation of it and I give additional information or comments about their answer. This would open a way that leads them into discerning the symbols or representations of the poem to make it creative and meaningful. After understanding the poem, I let the learners compose a poem having the same/similar theme with the poem we have discussed and I have found out that learners exhibit competence on poem composition, for they could use the elements of poetry meaningfully and effectively.

Jan. 9 12 (Week 3) We have a very long yuletide vacation. And I havent actually noticed that its teaching time again. Well I have prepared already an activity for the first day of school for year 2012. Since, were still on the Deepen Phase; I reached for quotable lines from famous author. I asked them to interpret a famous line through writing as a pre-requisite on understanding the metaphorical language that the authors use at their style. I also present them an Ancient Filipino Poem reflecting the embodiment of local ideals, feelings, aspirations and beliefs. My goal here is for my students to appreciate the wisdom of the ages, to teach them to be proud of our race, treasure our heritage and show the world the uniqueness of our country. I also have an activity letting them read the poem, aloud and feel as if they were the ones who wrote it. Through this, they could understand the poem better, thus enabling them to explicitly send its message. And for the Transfer Phase, I let them make a Poem, about Living to the Fullest; they could hear their goals, dreams, and a vision of a better future. Jan. 16 19 (Week 4) This week is actually there Examination period. So I need to review them about all the topics we have for the about all the topics we have for the Third quarter. But before the review, I asked them first to make a Collage about the poem they have written, entitled Living Life to the poem by using various related pictures, and their final output should show the theme of the poem. By doing this activity, learners creative mind works, likewise, their college will show how well did they understand the poem. This college already served as their project for their quarter. And when I look at some pictures, I found out that each of them learned the essence of the poem. The next day, I just gave a summative test as a review, emphasizing the pointers. When I was observing them, I remembered myself being a high school student also taking an examination, I remember those confused looks, those asking eyes, those thinking gestures, Im done with all those acts. Its just funny seeing me as them. With these I felt that these I felt glad realizing experiences being to a teacher. These are priceless experiences.

Jan. 24 26 (Week 5) Im happy to find out that their examination went fine. The highest score in English is 49, and most of the class got good scores, though there are really some who failed. Anyway its just nice to see that the effort I am exerting has a good result. At least, I was able to prove that my students did their part too, that they studied the lesson I have taught them. Fourth Quarter is about Essay. So for the first day, we have the first phase, Explore In this phase, they should discover ways on; How Journal Entries be meaningful? So I asked, them, their perception by unleashing that question through a game. This could, stimulate their minds learning to write a meaningful essay. Jan. 30 Feb. 2 (Week 6) My plan for this week is to make my students understand essays, and make them be familiar of its structure. So for a start, I showed them an example of essay then we differentiate the function of every paragraph which leads them on understanding the function of each part. Essays that I showed them are conveying of the Philippine Essay, so that, even theyre young they would be aware of the countrys present condition, being described in our Essay. Thus theyll be concern about the challenges that our country encounters, perhaps strengthening their commitment to help our nation. One of the Essays is entitled I am a Filipino by Carlos P. Romulo. This essay conveys Patriotisms hence, it would make the learners appreciate their inheritance and feel proud of the Malayan Race. This way their interest will be enlivened, theyll be stimulated to write meaningful essays. This week was also our Pre-Demonstration Teaching. I was really surprised, because our Supervising Professor, havent told us, and she said that she really meant it, because she wants to observe that natural way of teaching, the one which do not aim to impress anyone. And she also wants to see how committed we are in this profession, and that shows if we are preparing our lessons daily. Im just glad that I received constructive comment from her, and it inspires me to do even better next time. Feb. 6 9 (Week 7)

Pamantasan ng Cabuyao
PAGE

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Now were already on the Firm-up Phase, so the learners should start writing. On the first day, I gave them an activity; they should fill out the blanks of the given paragraph by their own ideas, so that theyll be learning how to develop a paragraph. Having this kind of activity makes them discover how well they could write, and also a means of finding-out their own style. To help them find a topic on the next day, I and presented, names of Some Philippine Prominent Personalities, to choose from. It would be easier for them if they have specific topics. Its simply fulfilling if you observe your students seriously working on their essays for it shows that they are continuously and consistently understanding essays. And when I checked some of their works, I really have this strange feeling, I never thought that I could be this happy, seeing your students commitment and improvement makes the happiest student teacher. Feb. 13 16 (Week 8) For this week, we have a new lesson, but still related with Essay. I have taught them types of Essay using activities on the Deepen Phase. My target here is to let the learners distinguish the differences of each type of essay. So what I did was to ask them to write a paragraph by choosing from the titles I have prepared for them. Each title depicts different moods, thus, making them aware that essays are written for different reasons, with different functions. Knowing this information would enrich students mind, it would give them an in depth learning, hence, they might develop their own style. We also have activities which help learners write a cohesive and unified journal entry. I used a game called chained essay this would challenge their creative and logical mind on producing personal composition with their groupmates. This game has been enjoyable. Its obvious on my students expressions, the way they laugh, the way they react, after reading what their classmates have written, it really makes me feel good. At the end of the game, I emphasized that when writing an essay, you should be focused on one single thought, making a cohesive, unified and meaningful essay. For their Transfer Phase, they should write already meaningful sets of Journal Entries as an application of what theyve learned. Through this activity, I would be able to see how well they are in writing, and I could also give comments for improvement.

Pamantasan ng Cabuyao
PAGE

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Feb. 20 23 (Week 9) On the first day of this week, I ask them to continue writing a meaningful Journal entry. Learners will be writing their own essay. They should think of these journals as a way to freely express their thoughts and feelings. They should also realize the connections between tasks and the world through meaningful essays, a way to instill the enduring significance of the concepts learned. This week is also the period of their Pre-Final Examination. We have a review about the previous discussion. I really exert effort on discussing it to them again, and I almost croak like a frog, because whenever I, hear murmurs, I louder my voice, to tell them whos the teacher, and to show whos powerful in the classroom. The examination went fine, although there are really some who cheats, but I only show that I notice them when I see the same student, cheating thrice. I was the one who checked their papers, and its just a bit disappointing that the result of their third periodical is quite better than their this time, but they admit that find the exam, really difficult. Still Im glad that most of them passed. Feb. 27 March 1 (Week 10) This week I taught them about Reflective Essay. For a start, I gave them an activity aiming to decode the Essential Question, How preferences, feelings and insights communicated in a reflective essay. Learners should reflect on their past experiences, being a freshman, on how their teachers, classmates and friends influenced as changed them by explaining clear and precise ideas from certain situation that has been so memorable for them. Actually, this activity shocked me, I do not expect that answers would be as presumptions as that, they hate some of their classmates, that they were not so happy because they do not like the attitudes of their classmates, it really makes me feel sad, and I just advice them not to listen on the negative reactions about them. And through the years, they would also learn how to properly adjust with others. This week, I also have a preparation for the Final Teaching Demonstration next week. (Its nerve rocking) March 5 8 (Week 11)

Pamantasan ng Cabuyao

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
This week is the period for our Final Teaching Demonstration. Thinking of it really shockers my knees, I am so nervous, its not that Im not confident with my abilities, I think Im just being pressured, for unknown reasons. Of course I give all my best for my Demo, I have seriously thought of my subject matter, I considered my instructional materials and I prepared all the questions that I have asked to my students. Before the Demo, I was really so nervous and even my students noticed it. Thank God I have them, they gave me strength by just telling that I could do it well and they would also do their best. At this point I have been more inspired and I told myself that I can do it, that I should execute my lesson very well and it should be shown on my performance. So during the Demo, everything went smoothly fine. They were very cooperative. After the Demo was our Post Conference. I am glad with the panelists comments. My heart over pours with happiness. I am just happy that they have appreciated my effort. Its just nice to hear that for one of the panelist, I am the best, that what Ive done is really commendable, and the only thing I lack of is a license, then I could already formally teach-all of these, are pleasant to hear. Words are not enough to explain what I feel. So to end this, just like what Prof. Quiambao has told me, Our lovely Jennica, Conratulations! March 12-15 (Week 12) This is my last week here in Southville-1 National High School. I have pictorial; with my critic teacher, and with my ever loving students. Actually leaving them is not that easy, and I really didnt formally tell them that Im not going to come back, I know myself well, I might just cry. My teaching experience has been so wonderful. For my 19 years of existence, this is what I can consider the most beautiful moment that has ever happened to me, the most valuable part of my life. In this profession, I have experience priceless happiness, I have felt a love so true and I have gained much realization about life. Yes its true, Once a teacher, forever a learner.

I-Descartes The Total Performers I could say that this section is the most competitive of all. Most of the students here are really actively participating and they are confident, not to mention they are also good. In this section is also where my most talented students belong and even they are tire belong and even they are tired they do not show it, its as if they have an extra energy prepared. What I like in this section is that they help one another, they show concern to their fellow classmates.

I=Bernoulli The Fun Makers This section is the naughtiest section, but its ok with me because they show such naughtiness after the activities. I have fun meeting these students, the way they throw jokes, the way they make me laugh and the way they laugh with me.

Lord, let me be just what they need. If they need someone to trust, let me be trustworthy. If they need sympathy, let me sympathize. If they need love, (and they do need love), let me love, in full measure. Let me not anger easily, Lord but let me be just. Permit my justice to be tempered in your mercy. When I stand before them, Lord, let me look strong and good and honest and loving. And let me be as strong and good and honest and loving as I look to them. Help me to counsel the anxious, crack the covering of the shy, temper the rambunctious with a gentle attitude. Permit me to teach only the truth. Help me to inspire them so that learning will not cease at the classroom door. Let the lessons they learn make their lives fruitful and happy. And, Lord, let me bring them to You.
