sponsoring an Earth Hour Community Challenge
to encourage customers to pledge that they will
turn off all non-essential lighting, appliances
and electronics in their homes and businesses.

Selkirk Wilderness Skiing
Closes for the Season April 5, 2012
On Thursday, April 5, 2012, Selkirk Wilderness Skiing
Limited will close for its thirty-seventh season on
Meadow Mountain. The signs, which have been
in place since mid-December, will be removed
April 5, 2012 except for signage restricting access
throughout and around the lodge site. This winter
marks the twenty-seventh anniversary of the
Meadow Mountain Signage Plan: a community and
government sanctioned agreement which provides
a legal closure of the skiing terrain tendered to Selkirk
Wilderness by the Province of British Columbia.
Over the past three months we have received
good cooperation from local snowmobilers, skiers,
and snowboarders. The compliance with the signs
has been greatly appreciated: it is critical to our
continued operation and to the safety of our guests
and of public users of Meadow Mountain. We hope
that our remaining few weeks of operation will
bring continued support for the agreement.

Mentors Make A Diference
Conference Planned For April
If a young boy grows up in a family without the positive
infuence of a healthy adult male role model, he faces high-
er risk for suicide, is more likely to have behavioural prob-
lems, drop out of school and end up in trouble with the law.
In early 2011, following an extensive consulting process
with communities, schools, recreation and social service
providers, Aboriginal community and parents, there was
very strong support for a project that would focus on
mentoring at-risk boys between the ages of 7 to 12 years.
Te Helping Boys Become Healthy Men project was born.
Boys ages 7-12 are open-hearted and vulnerable to posi-
tive and negative infuences in their lives. Nearing ado-
lescence, a key developmental stage, actions that protect
young boys from problems can dramatically alter the fu-
ture of the child. Mentoring is also an approach supported
by research. Caring adult-child relationships are one of the
most important protective factors for children growing up.
Led by the Kootenay Boundary Community Services
Co-op, the Helping Boys Become Healthy Men project
has supported fve communities to develop boys men-
torship programs, engage boys in positive activities and
foster ongoing learning about successful mentoring in the
region. According to Regional Coordinator, Mike Kent,
We are optimistic that this project will have a positive
impact on the lives of young men, which in turn, will cre-
ate a positive ripple efect to their families, schools and
communities. A highlight of the project will be the Men-
tors Make a Diference regional conference planned for
April 12, at the Hume Hotel in Nelson. Te conference
will feature keynote speaker Jim Conway of the Search
Institute whose message is grounded in both research and
his direct experience as a street youth-worker and former
staf member of the Center for Early Adolescence. Te
conference will showcase the fve community mentorship
initiatives that were undertaken in the region. And there
will be the valuable opportunity to engage government
representatives, schools, community service organiza-
tions, parents, funders and mentors in the conversation
about the importance of positive role models for young
men, the issues facing young men in the West Kootenay
and Boundary and how we can continue to take action.
