It always gives me pleasure to interact with the units of AMS, members of AMS society and all readers of the quarterly News letter of AMS-Hyderabad. I will be happy if the units and the others offer their suggestions to improve the quality of the magazine. The period after the publication of the last issue of AMS News Letter was eventful. The annual General Body meeting of AMS was held at Chennai*. Meaningful discussions were held and useful decisions were taken. Of them important was the approval of amendments to the Bye Laws of AMS society.

It is gratifying to note that the units of AMS are functioning efficiently and discharging their responsibilities satisfactorily. I may share my feelings here that some of the units, particularly the units which are receiving grants are facing financial crunch due to non-release of Govt grants on time. I am happy that some units which are Rajalakshmi Sunkavally financially sound are helping the needy sister units. Such help would go a long way in strengthening the over all functioning of AMS. In this connection I am grateful for the voluntary help of many outside experts who are helping Sabha as Chairpersons, Secretaries and members of committees in different units. The help rendered by them is highly commendable. They show keen interest in shaping the destinies of the units and are able to establish the reputation of the respective units in the society. I congratulate all those who are involved in the service of Andhra Mahila Sabha and request them to continue their support to Sabha.

Founder President Writes For a long time I have been wanting to write in some detail regarding one of the major programmes undertaken by the Andhra Mahila Sabha, the programme of Farmer's Training and Functional Literacy and Non-formal Education for Rural Women and other Adult education schemes which the Literacy House of the Andhra Mahila Sabha is implementing . In 1970-71 the Government of India started a country-wide five year programme of Farmer's Training and Functional Literacy in 100 blocks involving the State Governments , and undertook to give financial assistance on cent percent basis . The State of Andhra Pradesh is almost the only one in India which had entrusted to a non-official agency like Andhra Mahila Sabha with the implementation of this programme in eight districts of the State. The Sabha has also taken up the implementation of a project for non-formal education for rural women in Agriculture and and Family Welfare in two blocks. The Central Government gives a grant of nearly Rs. 60,000/- to each block for meeting the various requirements of the programme. The munificent grants from the World Literacy of Canada enabled the Sabha to construct the Literacy House in Hyderabad at a cost of nearly Rs. 5 lakhs and the support by the Canadian International Development Agency also helps the programme in areas such as training , orientation programmes and production of literature. The Sabha takes pride that it has been able to implement the programme to entire satisfaction of the State Government and the Central Government, as also the UNESCO and other International Agencies. It is always the desire and endeavour of the Sabha to take the cooperation of local institutions for the successful implementation of the programmes. The Sabha is proud today to state that the SV University, Tirupati and the Agricultural University, Hyderabad have came forward to help the Sabha in a big way for the successful working of these projects. Thanks are due to the guidance and help given by Governing Council, of which Dr. CD Deshmukh is the Chairman, the Director of the Literacy House , Dr. Veerabhadra Rao, the staff member Smt. Gita Naidu, the Secretary of the Trust Board, Sh BVD Narayana Rao and Chairmen of the Project Implementing Committees of these eight blocks.
