2011

At the end of 2011, the year-over-year change in non-graffiti gang-related crimes compared to the same period of time in 2010 was down by almost 11%. The chart to the right provides a comparison of specific gang crimes committed in 2010 with those committed in 2011. Homicides, robberies, simple assaults, burglaries, theft, and weapons offenses are all lower in 2011 than in 2010. However, crimes such as aggravated assaults, drugs, and drive-by shootings are all higher in 2011 compared to 2010. (The all other crimes category includes items such as vandalism other than graffiti, fleeing, escapes, warrants, obstruction of police, and public service calls.)

The Public Enemy program continued in 2011. This program was implemented as a strategy to combine the efforts of law enforcement, the media, and the community in targeting and arresting dangerous gang members. The program focuses these combined efforts on generating information on the location of individuals who have been designated as Public Enemies. Since its inception in 2002, 104 individuals who were deemed a threat to the community had been listed as Public Enemies at the end of 2011. Of that number, only one individual remains at large. Overall, the program boasts a 99% success rate. During 2011, gang detectives served 27 search warrants and seized 24 firearms and 26 other weapons. Gang-member arrests totaled 253 during 2011. The gang detectives gave 78 presentations during 2011 to schools, community groups, and various law enforcement agencies. A total of nearly 12,300 individuals were trained. Graffiti continues to be a big problem in our community. Graffiti thats tagged on public or private walls or structures, without permission, is a criminal act. However, not all tagging is connected to established street gangs. But, as far as public perception goes, all graffiti promotes a sense of urban blight and encourages additional vandalism. Furthermore, it can create an environment that generates additional, more serious crimes.

The following is a list of some of the more active gangs in the Salt Lake area. The acronym is what might be seen in graffiti or on a tattoo. The number of members refers to gang members who have been documented within the last five years. Gang Name Acronym # OF MBRS
