ASSIGNMENT QUESTION
1

This assignment is designed to illustrate and develop student understanding of the Periodic Table. Looking at the periodic table you will notice that it consists of vertical columns and horizontal rows of elements. Elements are the simplest pure substances that exist. The particles in a pure substance are exactly the same; they are in their simplest form. What so exciting is all matter is made up of these elements. (i) The layout of the table has been refined and extended over time as new

elements have been discovered and new theoretical models have been developed to explain chemical behavior. Who are some of the people responsible for developing the Periodic Table of the Elements? (12 marks) (ii) We are able to see patterns and trends within the periodic table when

information from the table is put into visualizer form.

(a)

By Using a graphic representations (organizer) sketch a Periodic Table and indicate the general trends in both the periods and groups.

(b)

Observe and explain the changes in

properties of elements as we go down the

table within a group or across the table within a period. Investigate the shielding effect, distance between nucleus and valence shell, and numbers of protons and electrons present in an atom to their physical and chemical properties. (12 marks) (iii) The table has found wide application in chemistry, physics, biology and

engineering especially chemical engineering. Discuss what would life be without the periodic table. (6 marks) [Total: 30 Marks] GUIDELINES FOR ANSWERING ASSIGNMENT/ STUDENT GUIDE

Question (i):

It is recommended that you present the history of the periodic table summary in a table or paragraph form. The following table or points could be used to present your findings: No. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Contributor Date Contribution Comment

Question (ii): Creating graphic representations (organizers) as a nonlinguistic representation helps students think about and recall knowledge better.

Provide a visual sketch like drawing graph, 3D model or arrow up and down to describe the properties mentioned on the periodic table. Explain the trends for both the groups and the periods of the elements. Properties discussed might be atomic radius, ionization energy, electron affinity, and electro negativity. Question (iii): Discuss why the periodic table might be valuable to scientists.

TUTOR GUIDELINE You are required to provide general supervision to students in order to help them to complete the assignment and give one or two examples of websites as references for the student.
