SHIP STRUCTURE
WHY ?
HOW ?
WHO ?
The Skin and Skeleton (bones) of a ship that enable the ship to performs its function safely throughout it life span. Mainly consists of plates and stiffening members Hollow girders that made of thin plate around its skin, strengthened by combination of longitudinal and transverse stiffening members that contributes to the longitudinal and local strength of the ship.
WHY ? : Importance
1. For the integrity of the ship 2. Provide platform and space for ship to deliver its function
1. First Principles - Uses Tedious Calculation of loading and Strength Analysis 2. Empirical Data - Previous Proven Design 3. Mixed of Both - Combination of Empirical Data (for Structural Scantling) and First Principles (for Strength Assessment) 4. Rule of Thumb - Purely from experience

Who ? : Responsibilities
1. Designers - To ensure design met the design requirements and cost effectiveness. 2. Builders Constructing the structures according to the design specification and details within the time frame. 3. Classification Society - Approving Design / Plan and Monitoring the quality of the construction process. Third Party. 4. Owner - Responsible for the payments

BRACKET
Features : Triangular like plate with edge flange, constructed underneath a heavy beam or girders. Functions : To provide extra support at the joint where higher bending moment could occur due to long beam. Examples : Deck Beam Brackets.
OTHERS
Other types of structures that may serve specialized function.
