WHAT ? : Basic Definition

The Skin and Skeleton (bones) of a ship that enable the ship to performs its function safely throughout it life span. Mainly consists of plates and stiffening members Hollow girders that made of thin plate around its skin, strengthened by combination of longitudinal and transverse stiffening members that contributes to the longitudinal and local strength of the ship.

Yahya Samian, Department of Marine Technology, FKM, UTM - August 2008

WHY ? : Importance

1. For the integrity of the ship 2. Provide platform and space for ship to deliver its function

3. Strength, safety and seaworthiness of the ship

Yahya Samian, Department of Marine Technology, FKM, UTM - August 2008

HOW ? : Design Methods

1. First Principles - Uses Tedious Calculation of loading and Strength Analysis 2. Empirical Data - Previous Proven Design 3. Mixed of Both - Combination of Empirical Data (for Structural Scantling) and First Principles (for Strength Assessment) 4. Rule of Thumb - Purely from experience
Yahya Samian, Department of Marine Technology, FKM, UTM - August 2008

Who ? : Responsibilities

1. Designers - To ensure design met the design requirements and cost effectiveness. 2. Builders Constructing the structures according to the design specification and details within the time frame. 3. Classification Society - Approving Design / Plan and Monitoring the quality of the construction process. Third Party. 4. Owner - Responsible for the payments

What - Ship Structures Types

PLATING
Features : Thin plate that made up the outer skin (envelope) and internal partitions of the ship hull and superstructures. Various thickness depending on the plate location and loading. Plates to be strengthened (stiffened) by the stiffening members. It can be flat or curved depending on the shape of the hull or partitions. Functions : Provide watertight hull and compartments, Supporting Internal and external load, contributes to overall (longitudinal) and local strength of the ships. Examples : Keel plate, Bottom Plate, Bilge Plate, Side Plate, Sheer Plate, Deck Plate, Bulkheads, Floors, Superstructures Walls and Floors.

What - Ship Structures Types

SECTIONS
Features : Beam type structures that made of from different shape of cross sections such as Tee, Inverted L (angle), Bulb, I, Top Hat, SemiCircle, etc. Attached either longitudinally, transversely, vertically or horizontally to (stiffened) the ship plate. The sections are either built in from the steel mills or prefabricated in the shipyard before welded to the plates. Functions : Strengthening the ship plates to provide longitudinal and local strength. Its also provide the plates stability. Examples : Bottoms Longitudinals, Side longitudinals, Deck Longitudinals, Web / Transverse Frames, Deck Beam / Girders, Bulkhead stiffeners / Girders, Wall Stiffeners / Girders, etc.

What - Ship Structures Types

SOLID
Features : Solid structures that are normally constructed vertically underneath the deck or heavy load. These structures may have circular or rectangular cross section Functions : To support heavy and concentrated load Examples : Pillars, Floor Struts, Stanchions

BRACKET
Features : Triangular like plate with edge flange, constructed underneath a heavy beam or girders. Functions : To provide extra support at the joint where higher bending moment could occur due to long beam. Examples : Deck Beam Brackets.

OTHERS
Other types of structures that may serve specialized function.
