St. Francis Church Biblically minded. Mission Driven.

The Right Reverend John C. Bauerschmidt--Bishop of Tennessee

The Reverend Joseph B. Howard--Vicar

Order of Worship:

St. Francis Church is a community dedicated to the

transformation of lives through the Gospel of Jesus Christ for
the Kingdom of God.

The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

The Ninth Sunday after Trinity
Proper 11, Year A

A congregation of the Diocese of Tennessee and the world-wide Anglican Communion

A note for visitors: We’re thankful that you could join us for worship today, and we
pray God blesses you in your time here. The service is printed in your bulletin. If you
have any questions don’t hesitate to ask someone around you!

St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. In order to be

a community where all ages feel welcome, we provide coloring materials for children to
use during worship and seek to be a community that understands the specific gifts and
challenges that children bring. We encourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so,
to sit toward the front with your children, as little-ones are often more attentive if they
can see what is happening.

That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to take
advantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through the
Kitchen off of the entryway.

In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the service
begins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply,
and reflect upon the past week. When you’re ready, you might say the following prayer
or one like it in preparation for worship.

O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and
of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness of
heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled
affections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; though Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading: Wisdom 12:13,16-19

All sit.

Through the care of his people, and by allowing for their repentance, God demonstrates
his power balanced with loving-kindness.

A Reading from the book of Wisdom.

There is no god besides you, whose care is for all people, to whom you should prove that
you have not judged unjustly; for your strength is the source of righteousness, and your
sovereignty over all causes you to spare all. For you show your strength when people
doubt the completeness of your power, and you rebuke any insolence among those who
know it. Although you are sovereign in strength, you judge with mildness, and with great
forbearance you govern us; for you have power to act whenever you choose.

Through such works you have taught your people that the righteous must be kind, and you
have filled your children with good hope, because you give repentance for sins.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

The Psalm of the day:

Remain seated

Psalm 86:11-17

11 Teach me your way, O Lord,

and I will walk in your truth; *
knit my heart to you that I may fear your Name.

12 I will thank you, O Lord my God, with all my heart, *
5
and glorify your Name for evermore.

13 For great is your love toward me; *
you have delivered me from the nethermost Pit.

14 The arrogant rise up against me, O God,
and a band of violent men seeks my life; *
they have not set you before their eyes.

15 But you, O Lord, are gracious and full of compassion, *
slow to anger, and full of kindness and truth.

16 Turn to me and have mercy upon me; *
give your strength to your servant;
and save the child of your handmaid.

17 Show me a sign of your favor,
so that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed; *
because you, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

Second Reading: Romans 8:18-25

Paul declares that those who have chosen to follow Jesus can live in joyful hope because
they are sons and daughters adopted by God.

A Reading from Paul’s letter to the Church in Rome.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the
glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing
of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of
him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to
corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that
the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not
only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly
as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we
were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we
hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

People: Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn: Spread, O spread thou mighty word Hymnal 530

Holy Gospel: Matthew 13:24-30,36-43

All stand.

Jesus cautions those who are tempted to root out those who do not meet certain criteria.
A community that tries to cast out the unrighteous will harm the righteous as well.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to _______.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus put another parable before the crowds, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be
compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his
enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So when the plants came
up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the master of the
house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then
does it have weeds?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to
him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the
weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest,
and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles
to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”

Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying,
“Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” He answered, “The one who sows
the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of
the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them
is the devil. The harvest is the close of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the
weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the close of the age. The Son of
Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all
law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping
and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their
7
Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ

Sermon: The Rev. Joseph B. Howard

The Nicene Creed

We

believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

10
People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to new
life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the
company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus: S-130

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Please kneel or stand at this time, as best helps you to pray.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we
had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus
Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of
us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a
perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took
bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and
said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of
me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,
and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed
for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the
remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

11
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,
the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may
faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and
at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the
unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.
AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed by thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
Therefore let us keep the feast.

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for
you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

ON RECEIVING COMMUNION: All baptized Christians who are in love and charity
with their neighbors are welcome to receive communion. If you do not wish to receive,
you are invited to come for a prayer of blessing—simply cross your arms over your chest
to let the servers know that you will not be receiving. Prayers before receiving can

The minister and people together, pray:

of the most precious Body and Blood
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ;
12

that we are living members of the Body of your Son,
and heirs of your eternal kingdom.
And now, Father, send us out
to do the work you have given us to do,
to love and serve you
as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.

A Note on Today’s Readings

Proper 11, Year A

Welcome to St. Francis Church. As we continue, Sunday by Sunday, to read the Gospel
according to Matthew, we are in a section containing Jesus’ parables concerning the
kingdom of God. This parable of the wheat and the weeds reaffirms God’s patience
with the church. While we are often impatient with its imperfections, God is merciful
and waits until the end-time before separating the good from the bad. We are urged by
Jesus to grow into fruitful members of God’s family.

The first reading, from the Wisdom of Solomon, also affirms God’s forbearance and
mercy. We are to exercise righteousness in our relationships to others, and by our
repentance, our turning back to God.

In the second reading we are assured by Paul that the whole creation is moving toward
redemption. In this passage, in fact, it is stated that our redemption is the condition for
the redemption of the whole creation.

We share in the eucharistic action in order that God’s redemptive power may lead us
toward the kingdom. We share also in order that we may be the means by which
redemption comes to the whole creation. That is our vocation as the people of God
and as members of the Body of Christ.

Announcements
Welcome to our guests!
We’re very happy that you chose to worship with us this morning. Please join us after the
service for snacks and conversation, to take some time to get to know us and for us to get
to know you. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

The Gifts of God Sundays from July 6 -August 3 from 9:15-10:15: The Season
after Pentecost is a natural time to begin the process of discerning and considering the
gifts which God has bestowed upon us as individuals and as a community. I would like to
invite all of you to join in a time of learning and reflection about the meaning and use of
God’s gifts.

Dateline NBC will be doing a special tomorrow night (Monday July 21 @ 9:00
central) entitled “Tower Dogs” which explores the dangers of the communications tower
construction industry. Kyle Waites is interviewed in the special and he and the family will
be in NYC for the program. Please pray for their safe travel.

Parish work day: We will be cleaning and straightening up around the parish from
9:30-12:00 on Saturday August 2. Everyone is welcome (and your help is appreciated!)

Sharing Our Faith: Evangelism 101, September 6th, 9-2:30pm, at St. George’s:

This one day conference will be led by Carrie Boren, Diocesan Missioner for Evangelism in
Dallas, TX.

Carrie will speak about THE Story of the good news of Jesus Christ, several approaches for
sharing this good news, telling your story, and also congregational evangelism ideas such
as how to be a welcoming community. She will help participants think through making
community service activities evangelistic and how to run an evangelistic event.

The cost is fifteen dollars which will include a boxed lunch and registration fee.

Register at
www.regonline.com/SharingOurFaithEvangelism101

And why should you? Because Christians need to share their faith and people are longing
to hear the good news. A few nuts and bolts on how to do this would be helpful.
