THE ARK OF YHWH

Parashah Noach

In this weeks Torah study, we will see a picture of the Salvation of Yah and His judgment against sin. The story of Noah is prophetic and is a picture of YHWH Messiah, Yeshua and His ministry of redemption. The first thing that is of import in this study is the very name of Noah. We see in Genesis 6 that a serious situation as sin has broken out on the planet. Genesis 6:5 (KJV) And YHWH saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. A heavy curse and darkness was resting over the earth because of the transgression of the Torah. The word wickedness in this verse is from the Hebrew word ra (Strongs 7451) and is translated most of the time as evil, but also has meanings of wretchedness, trouble, mischief. The word imagination is from the Hebrew yetser (Strongs #3336) and means something framed, imagined, or planned in the sense of devising wickedness. If you have ever lived in a wicked or dark place, you know there is little relief from fear, darkness, and robbery. Lamech named his son Noah which means rest or relief as he would bring the people relief or rest from this terrible situation. The earth was in such a desperate condition that verses 6-7 of parasha Bereshit tells us, Genesis 6:6-7 (NLT) 6:6 So YHWH was sorry he had ever made them. It broke his heart. 7 And YHWH said, I will completely wipe out this human race that I have created. Yes, and I will destroy all the animals and birds, too. I am sorry I ever made them. Noah was the 10th in the line of the patriarchs. How did Noah stay true to YHVH amidst a wicked and evil generation? We learned last week that Noahs predecessors lived hundreds of years. This could be a factor in the preservation of Noah and his family. Noahs father, Lamech, was fifty-six years old when Adam died, a hundred and eleven years old when Enoch was no more, and a hundred and sixty-eight years old when Seth passed away. Lamech was taught by these men about creation, the Garden of Eden, and the fall and the promise of the Messiah. Also they would have taught him the Torah that was passed on orally from the patriarchs. Noahs father knew Adam for 56 years. The number 10 is a number of judgment in scripture. As the human race got to 10 generations, it was past repair. Abraham passed through 10 trials before he was vindicated. There would be 10 plagues in Egypt before the people of Israel were delivered. The children of Israel would later murmur and rebel 10 times in the wilderness. Later they would corporately break every one of the 10 commandments and be exiled for their disobedience. The Father always finds a man that he will raise up to bring deliverance. We are not told a lot about Noah, but enough to find out why YHWH chose him. Genesis 6:9 (NLT) This is the history of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless man living on earth at the time. He consistently followed YHWH's will and enjoyed a close relationship with him. He is seen as a Tsadik or a righteous man. Such a man was always obedient to the Torah. We see that when YHWH commanded him to do something, he obeyed. Genesis 6:22 (NLT) So Noah did everything exactly as YHWH had commanded him. Genesis 7:5 (NLT) So Noah did exactly as YHWH had commanded him. In the Jewish Encyclopedia, we learn that a Tsadik was also one who reproves and forewarns others. Vol. 12 p. 1195.

Noah felt he was a responsible not for not only preserving the human race in the ark, but also the species of animals. Noah is a type of Yeshua who saves all humanity also. Romans 5:15-17 (NLT) 5:15 For this one man, Adam, brought death to many through his sin. But this other man, Yeshua The Messiah, brought forgiveness to many through YHWH's bountiful gift. 16 And the result of YHWH's gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man's sin. For Adam's sin led to condemnation, but we have the free gift of being accepted by YHWH, even though we are guilty of many sins. 17 The sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over us, but all who receive YHWH's wonderful, gracious gift of righteousness will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Yeshua The Messiah. Yeshua was also blameless and kept all the commandments so He could be a perfect sacrifice. John 15:10 (KJV) If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. 1 Peter 1:18-20 (NLT) 1:18 For you know that YHWH paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. 19 He paid for you with the precious lifeblood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of YHWH. 20 YHWH chose him for this purpose long before the world began, but now in these final days, he was sent to the earth for all to see. And he did this for you. As we continue through the construction of the Ark, we will see it is a picture of the Messiah, a sort of tabernacle floating on water. First of all the ark was to be made of gopher wood. Strongs concordance suggests this was cypress, a very strong wood. The boat needed to be made of just the right kind of wood to endure the storm. Wood or trees in scripture are a symbol of mankind. Psalms 1:3 (KJV) And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Isaiah 56:3 (KJV) Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to YHWH, speak, saying, YHWH hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree. Yeshua was even stronger than the ark and has endured the storms of evil to save us. Noah was to make rooms in the ark. Qen (Strongs #7064), the Hebrew for rooms, also means nests. Noah was to prepare nests in the ark for the animals. In the book of Isaiah, we find the final judgment of the world spoken of and YHWH calling us to enter into rooms or chambers to hide ourselves from the coming storm. Isaiah 26:20-21 (KJV) 26:20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. 21 For, behold, YHWH cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain. The word for chambers in Hebrew is Kheder (Strongs # 2314). The word means a "compartment" or "room" (within a building) which affords privacy. The KJV usually translates this word as "chamber," using "room" in the sense of "space."Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament. Paul tells us there is no condemnation for those who are in Messiah Yeshua. Romans 8:1 (KJV) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Messiah Yeshua, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Next we see the ark covered with pitch. The word pitch in Hebrew is kaphar (Strongs # 3722/3724) from the same root word that refers to the act of protecting - to cover, annul, forgive and pardon. Thus YHWH was prophesying through Noah and his family of the Messiah that would cover, and pardon past transgressions and iniquities of the generations since the Garden. Interestingly, it is in the process of the Ark building that our attention is first called to the act of propitiation and atonement: "kippur." The verb and noun for the action (of "covering") and the material ("pitch") are of the root, k.f.r (kaf, pey/fey, resh) -

which makes up "kippur". Thus this Ark is to become a shelter, offering a covering for the sins of the age, as it were. The rabbis believe that anyone, among those who had watched it being built through the many years of its construction, could have also found refuge in it. Instead, the spectators chose to scoff and ridicule its builder. In most other cases, the verb and the noun stemming from the root k.f.r are used directly in connection with 'atonement' (e.g. Daniel 9:24) or as 'payment of a price, or ransom' (e.g. Num. 35:31). Messiah is our kaphar or covering for our sins. Next we see Noah was told to make a window. Genesis 6:16 (KJV) A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. The word for window comes from the word in Hebrew tsohar (Strongs #6672). This is the only time in the scriptures it is translated window. Most of the time it is translated noon or mid day. It really means a light or something illuminated. It is related to the word yishar in the Hebrew, which means fresh oil from the olive tree. Could this be a reference to the Light of the World, Yeshua, Who was in the ark guiding it to safety? John 8:12 (KJV) Then spake Yeshua again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Noah and his family entered the ark on the tenth day of the second month (Iyar) on the Biblical calendar. There is a provision in Torah for those who cannot partake in the Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread due to being ceremonially unclean. In Numbers 9:6-12 we see there were those who were unclean, who could not celebrate on the first month. YHVH made provision for these persons in the second month on the same dates. Noah and his family were in an unclean place for the Passover in the first month. It is possible that YHWH made provision for them in the second month; Noah entered the ark on the tenth day of the second month. Could they have celebrated Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread in the ark before the floodwaters came seven days later? Eating the unleavened bread during the feast days served as a type of cleansing for Noah and his family, with the floodwaters acting as a Mikvah for status change from an unclean realm to the clean realm. For 40 days the flood kept coming on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered to a depth of more than twenty feet (Genesis 7: 17-22). The number 40 is a time of testing. Noah waits 40 days to open the window and let out the raven. We see Moses tested for his first 40 years in Egypt, the Israelites tested for 40 years, Nineveh tested for 40 days, Messiah tested for 40 days in the wilderness, and Him inspecting the fruit of His sacrifice for 40 days before He ascended back to heaven. The number 40 is a probationary time period of testing. Genesis 8:1-6 The earth was flooded 150 days, then YHVH sent a wind, the Ruach HaChodesh (Spirit of YHVH), to help the waters recede. At the end of the 150 days the ark rested on Mount Ararat on the 17th day of the seventh month, during the Feast of Tabernacles. Waters continued to recede until, on the first day (Rosh Chodesh/New Moon) of the tenth month, the tops of the Mountains become visible. After forty days Noah opened the window. Window is challon (Strongs # 2474/TWOT #660c) from the Hebrew root word chalal (#660), meaning wound (fatally), bore through and pierce. Challah (#660b) is a baked unleavened, pierced cake presented in the mincha or grain offering. It is made of fine flour and oil (Leviticus 2:4; Leviticus 7:12; Numbers 6:15). Challah was part of the firstfruits offering and was placed on the altar as part of the elevation offering (Numbers 15:20; Leviticus 8:26; Exodus 29:23). Participants ate challah as part of their shelamim/peace offering (2 Samuel 6:19; Exodus 29:2; Numbers 6:19). The Hebrew word for window is challon (TWOT #660c) if taken as a piercing or hollow in the wall. That which was the illumination in the ark also became a visible window or

piercing. Until the time of the flood, Light had been receding on earth because of the corruptness of the generation. The Light of Yeshua was with Noah and his family in the ark and now that Light also became a window, a piercing or hollow in the wall. Challon comes from the root word chalal (TWOT # 660) meaning wounded (fatally), bore through and pierced. Comments: Yeshua, our offering, was pierced for our transgressions against the Torah and out of His side flowed life. The story of Noah is about the end time judgment. Just Noahs flood came to the earth to destroy the sin and corruption, so will another flood come. Peter prophesies in 2 Peter 3:3-7 (NLT) 3:3 First, I want to remind you that in the last days there will be scoffers who will laugh at the truth and do every evil thing they desire. 4 This will be their argument: "Jesus promised to come back, did he? Then where is he? Why, as far back as anyone can remember, everything has remained exactly the same since the world was first created." 5 They deliberately forget that YHWH made the heavens by the word of his command, and he brought the earth up from the water and surrounded it with water. 6 Then he used the water to destroy the world with a mighty flood. 7 And YHWH has also commanded that the heavens and the earth will be consumed by fire on the day of judgment, when ungodly people will perish. Just as there was a flood of water, so there will be another flood of fire. The difference between the two is that fire completely burns up sin and corruption and will totally purify the earth. The first flood is a type of being born again and the baptism of repentance. The waters of the flood and the ark are types of cleansing and forgiveness of sin. The ark came again and settled on a new purified earth, but sin was not eradicated. Just as we are baptized in a Mikvah pool and start a new life, so the sin is not completely eradicated. This is why the Messiah had to come. Matthew 3:11-12 (NLT) 3:11 "I baptize with water those who turn from their sins and turn to YHWH. But someone is coming soon who is far greater than I amso much greater that I am not even worthy to be his slave. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12 He is ready to separate the chaff from the grain with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, storing the grain in his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire." The earth and Yahs people will go through another baptism in which sin will be completely eradicated. This baptism is with the Spirit and is connected to the Latter Rain. Hosea 6:3 (KJV) Then shall we know, if we follow on to know YHWH: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth. Hosea 10:12 (KJV) Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek YHWH, till he come and rain righteousness upon you. Both these verses contain the word for rain yarah (Strongs #3384) which is the root word for Torah. So here we see an end time flood of Torah being poured out so YHWH bride can be righteous tsdekah (Strongs 6663) just as Noah was in his generations. But first the bride needs to break up the fallow ground and to continue to follow on to know YHWH as she follows Torah. In this way she will escape the destruction of the earth like Noah. Isaiah 52:10-11 (NLT) 52:10 YHWH will demonstrate his holy power before the eyes of all the nations. The ends of the earth will see the salvation of our YHWH. 11 Go now, leave your bonds and slavery. Put Babylon behind you, with everything it represents, for it is unclean to you. You are YHWH's holy people. Purify yourselves, you who carry home the vessels of YHWH. May you get in the ARK before the Flood of Fire comes!
