0 BACKGROUND
1.1 Introduction The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP), which is a set of communications protocols to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support electronic mail. Most traditional communications media including telephone, music, film, and television are redefined by the Internet, giving birth to new services such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). Newspaper, book and other print publishing are adapting to Web site technology or are reshaped into blogging and web feeds. The Internet has enabled new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking. Online shopping has boomed both for major retail outlets and small artisans and traders. Business-to-business and financial services on the Internet also affect supply chains across entire industries. For modernisation purpose, the Internet is allowing greater flexibility in working hours and location, especially with the spread of unmetered high-speed connections and web applications. For convenience sake, the Internet can now be accessed almost anywhere by numerous means, especially through mobile Internet devices. Mobile phones, datacards, handheld game consoles and cellular routers allow users to connect to the Internet from anywhere provided there is a wireless network supporting that device's technology. Within the

limitations imposed by small screens and other limited facilities services of the Internet, including email and the web, may be available.

Furthermore, educational material at all levels from pre-school to post-doctoral is available from websites. Examples range from CBeebies, through school and high-school revision guides, virtual universities, to access to top-end scholarly literature through the likes of Google Scholar. Internet also helps with homework and other assignments, self-guided learning, whiling away spare time and looking up more detail on an interesting fact. It has never been easier for people to access educational information at any level from anywhere. The Internet in general and the World Wide Web in particular are important enablers of both formal and informal education.

The Internet allows computer users to remotely access other computers and information stores easily, wherever they may be across the world. They may do this with or without the use of security, authentication and encryption technologies depending on the requirements. This is encouraging new ways of working from home, collaboration and information sharing in many industries.

1.2 Problem Statement

Internet can be also known as a peer-to-peer system. We can get all kind of info we need by just a click. This is the reason that many students literarily spend hours surfing the net. However, nowadays most of the students tend to misuse the internet

than to get latest information from the network. Most of the students tend to waste time on online chatting. Students can chat with their friends for a long period of time because online chatting is not very costly. So, they may spend a whole day on chatting and they are unable to use their free time wisely. Not only that, with the introduce of social network like Facebook and Twitter, teenagers have spend more time on the Internet. They like to chat on the wall of Facebook and share their lives. They also enjoy of stalking in other peoples web pages, be it the celebrities on the television and in the tabloids or even their friends. Other than that, some of the social network also including games, for users entertainment purpose. This has cause addiction among the users, especially among teenagers.

Besides that, online games like Maple Story, Cabal, and Dota which are empowering the peoples mind especially teenager have brought many disadvantages. Though some online games can be played during their free time but it may cause addiction to them. As they got addicted, they will keep on playing the games and hence increasing the electricity bills which may add the parents burden. The addiction of online games will also prevents students from carrying out other benefited activities like exercising, studying and doing their chores. Some of them dont even can concentrate on the lessons in class as in their mind, they only think of strategies to pass to the next levels. They may even skip schools just to stay at home or Internet cafs to play the

online games. Worst of all, the online games will gradually take over the role of traditional games which are one of the most valuable cultures heritage in Malay society.

There is nothing wrong if students surf on Internet to while away an idle homework to have some fun of for relaxation. However, something is seriously wrong if students is addicted to net surfing without purpose for whole day and night to the activities exclusion for other activities.

1.3 Research Goal

The study is carried out to study the reason that the students nowadays are so insist on surfing the Internet, especially social web such as Facebook, Twitter and Friendster and online games like Defense of the Ancients (DOTA), Maple Story and Cabal. Furthermore, the study is done to find out the purpose of the students to go online besides for the purpose to login to social web and playing online games. After that, the study is also carried out to find out the way of solving the addiction of the teenagers towards the Internet.

1.4 Objective of the Study

The objective to carry out this study is to find out the frequency of the students to surf the Internet. The objective of the study including the following:

To find out the reason that students are so insist on surfing the Internet To find out the affect after they surf for a long period To find out the degree of addiction of the students To understand the purpose of the students surfing the Internet
