BR BROADCAST THEORIES 3 Units

This course involves the consideration of the ways in which theories are constructed and have been broadly applied to human communication and then moves on to consider specific theories about contemporary broadcast media, particularly television, radio, and Internet streaming media. It will present a variety of different perspectives on the media within a framework that should complement the students production experiences and goals; cultivating skills that will enhance their development as participants in the evolving media culture. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, the students should be able to: appreciate the scope of major communication theories locate relevant research and literature understand major communication theories analyze the process of theoretical inquiry review and critique primary researches on related topics compare and contrast major communication theories apply communication theory to first-hand experience evaluate strengths and limitations of various communication theories 9. Course Requirements: To pass this course, the students should have exhibited, participated in or accomplished the following: 1. Satisfactory to Excellent Attendance records. The prevailing University standard is recognized, that if a student garners the prescribe number of absences he or she is dropped from the class roll. Inability to confirm presence during roll call is immediately considered as an absence. 2. Active participation in classroom discussions and activities. Students should be participative in classroom discussions by making sure that researches and home reading assignments are accomplished. Students should have efficient performance in classroom reporting and sharing activities. 3. Satisfactory to Excellent scores in quizzes, exercises and major examinations. Students will be given a total of twenty (20) quizzes for the whole semester totaling to 100 points where the students are expected to garner at least 75 points. 4. Students will be given a total of twenty assignments for the semester. Essay assignments should be submitted in this format: Minimum of 2000 word count Short bonds (stapled) Times New Roman (TNR) Font Font Size: 11 1.5 spacing Justified paragraphs Proper documentation The students should have affixed their signatures on their papers as proof of aunthenticity. Cover page with the Heading as Assignment # (centered, Font size 20, TNR) and below it the subject, name and section of the student and the date of submission arranged in such manner (centered, Font size 20, TNR):

A 6-8 minute presentation that overviews for the rest of the class some interesting aspects of what the reporter found in researching his designated topic. The student will be resource person 6-8 minutes. Preferably a short clip or power point presentation should contain the body of content. INABILITY TO PRESENT CRITICISM REPORT CONSTITUTES AN AUTOMATIC FAIL, except in some reasonable cases. 6. Comprehensive research works on designated topics. Students will be given a total of eight (8) research papers for this course. Minimum page count is ten (10). Book Antiqua font, size 11, 1.5 spacing, justified. The content formats for each will be announced at the point once the research topics are designated. The Cover page remains the same as with assignments, except that the heading will be Research # instead. Works which will not be submitted at the prescribed time WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND WILL CONSTITUTE AN AUTOMATIC FAIL. 7. Term Requirements. For the midterm period, students will be required to submit a special movie review were they will apply the communication theories learned in the analysis of their selected film. (Format is same with research with slight logical modifications) For the final period, students will be required to submit a critical study (thesis format) that evaluates a particular media of their choice using communication theories. Works which will not be submitted at the prescribed time WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND WILL CONSTITUTE AN AUTOMATIC FAIL. FAILURE TO ADHERE TO PRESCRIBE FORMATS AND GUIDELINES CONSTITUTE AN AUTOMATIC FAIL.
