set firmly upon both the remarkable heritage and uncertain future
of her people, she wrote her Last Will and Testament in 1883 and
put that plan in motion.
Her foresight has proven incredibly accurate. Kamehameha Schools,
which Pauahi founded in her great-grandfather’s name, has
produced four generations of “good and industrious men and
women,” with scores of leaders in every industry.
Kamehameha Schools currently serves more than
5,400 students on three campuses and
another 36,000 in community
programs statewide. Wonderful
progress is being made; and yet, we
know it is not enough.

One of the ways in which Pauahi’s legacy is being extended to reach
haumāna who are not able to attend Ks’ campuses is through charter
school support. KAPF is helping to build awareness and get support for
these courageous schools that give haumāna a choice at a culturally rich
education. Additionally, KAPF and the Harold K.L. castle Foundation have
Hawaiian-focused start-up public charter schools offer unique services partnered to support literacy education program in Windward O‘ahu
to children and families based on culturally grounded pedagogy and public schools. studies have shown that increasing competence in writing 9
instruction. Haumāna attending these charter schools achieve marked and reading predicts future success in school. simple skills that many of
academic improvement, become leaders in all that they do and represent us take for granted are not guaranteed, so the support that comes from
our kūpuna well. our Foundation and others makes a lifetime difference.

Foundation when the foundation was created. They celebrate their 50th To help promote their fundraising goals and to keep up with wala‘au, they also
reunion this year and take pride in the fact that they have stayed together as a publish a newsletter, coordinated by Ku‘ulei Reyes. The newsletter also reports

Over the years, they tried various different fundraising ideas from selling
Portuguese sausage and kalua pig to coordinating beer busts, before striking
upon a winning formula. They wanted something that would eliminate barriers
to participation, as well as the need for cold storage. They decided to ask their
classmates to contribute to the class fund, on a dues basis, that could be
collected over time. Some found it convenient to contribute monthly. They set
targeted goals and made a special push for donations of at least $25 per year for
five years. It helped that they had an excellent Treasurer, Melsa Takamatsu who
stayed on top of the dues payments.
With the understanding that there will be fewer classmates at their next reunion
in 2012, they ambitiously took full advantage of alumni week activities.
Planning the events provided them with another opportunity to work
together. Lynette Paglinawan shared, “It was satisfying that so many
classmates could attend and share in the giving effort.” They held a banquet
dinner and silent auction attended by 90 classmates, which raised an
additional $10,000 for their class scholarship fund. Many hands and hearts
contributed to making the Kamehameha Schools Class of 1957 50th
reunion a success. I mua!

Foundation when the foundation was created. They celebrate their 50th To help promote their fundraising goals and to keep up with wala‘au, they also
reunion this year and take pride in the fact that they have stayed together as a publish a newsletter, coordinated by Ku‘ulei Reyes. The newsletter also reports

Over the years, they tried various different fundraising ideas from selling
Portuguese sausage and kalua pig to coordinating beer busts, before striking
upon a winning formula. They wanted something that would eliminate barriers
to participation, as well as the need for cold storage. They decided to ask their
classmates to contribute to the class fund, on a dues basis, that could be
collected over time. Some found it convenient to contribute monthly. They set
targeted goals and made a special push for donations of at least $25 per year for
five years. It helped that they had an excellent Treasurer, Melsa Takamatsu who
stayed on top of the dues payments.
With the understanding that there will be fewer classmates at their next reunion
in 2012, they ambitiously took full advantage of alumni week activities.
Planning the events provided them with another opportunity to work
together. Lynette Paglinawan shared, “It was satisfying that so many
classmates could attend and share in the giving effort.” They held a banquet
dinner and silent auction attended by 90 classmates, which raised an
additional $10,000 for their class scholarship fund. Many hands and hearts
contributed to making the Kamehameha Schools Class of 1957 50th
reunion a success. I mua!
