Historical Context
2005-Hug labeled a failing school. Had never made AYP. Least safe high school in Washoe County School District Curriculum path that did not align with HIGH

expectations for all students Consistent decisions made that had marginalized kids, despite good intentions. Unstable school community. Lack of vision, direction. Lowest academic performer in the State of Nevada Superintendent/Board concerned with performancecontemplating ALL interventions including school closure

Growth: 2005-2011
Yearly and incremental gains in EVERY measureable category Implementation of four, small, heterogeneously linked houses, each

serving students in grades 9-12 First high school in Nevada history to work its way off of the Failing Schools List. Made AYP 4 of the last 6 years Changed reputation in WCSD, Nevada and Nationally 2011 will be the largest graduating class in Hugs modern history. (Since the opening of McQueen HS in 1982) ALL kids are supported with rigorous curriculum that makes HSPE success and college access a reality Phenomenal school community-teachers and classified staff engaged in meeting the needs of ALL kids Hug becomes Title 1 school in 2009-10 school year bringing in excess of $500K in resources to the school yearly to support kids!

If were improving, why more change?

Our rate of change has not

quenched our need to support each student now! Allocation of resources Create more rigor THROUGH increased relevance Tightly align our school community with district vision (signature programs and open enrollment) We still have much room to improve! Our kids deserve it! The economic future of our community relies on our leadership and innovation.

What changes are coming?

2011-12-Hug will shift from four houses to three small learning

communities. Hug will reduce administrative support by 1 Assistant Principal, 1 Dean of Students to preserve teacher allocations By 2012-13 Hugs 3 Small Learning Communities will be Thematic/Signature Programs focused on increasing rigor through relevance.

Hug High continues to be a thought-leader in WCSD

utilizing the best, most current school reform thinking nationally to ensure that we meet our students where they are, personalize, offer rigor through relevance, and ensure that ALL kids graduate prepared for college. Hug works to align all curriculum with the Common Core Standards through the lens of their thematic small learning community. Hug supports and plays an integral role in the high school renewal and reform efforts in WCSD to ensure that our school and district meet essential performance targets.
