Russell Napier LLB (Hons), LLM (Cantab), ASIP Russell Napier is a consultant global macro strategist with CLSA

Asia-Pacific Markets writing on issues impacting global equity markets. He has an honours degree in law from Queens University Belfast, a masters degree in law from Magdalene College Cambridge and has graduated from the Professional Institute of Legal Studies in Belfast. In 1991 he passed the Society of Investment Analyst exams (the predecessor organisation to the CFA Society of the UK) winning the prize for best accounting and corporate finance paper. Russell began his investment career over twenty years ago as an investment manager at Baillie Gifford in Edinburgh managing funds in the Japanese then the US and finally the Asian markets. Moving to Foreign & Colonial Emerging Markets in London he was responsible for managing Asian portfolios. In May 1995 Russell became Asian equity strategist for stockbrokers CLSA in Hong Kong and occupied that position in a full time capacity until 1999. He was ranked number one for Asian equity strategy in all major polls of money managers in 1997, 1998 and 1999. Since 1999, apart from fulfilling the consultancy role with CLSA, Russell has created a new course in investment called A Practical History of Financial Markets (www.sifeco.org) which forms part of the MBA programme at the Edinburgh Business School. The course runs in Edinburgh, London, New York and Singapore and has been oversubscribed for the past four years. Russell is managing director of the Didasko Education Company which owns and operates the course. In 2000 Russell, in conjunction with CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets, formed a charity to provide scholarships for students taking the MSc in Investment Analysis at The University of Stirling. He is a trustee of the charity which to date has funded the fees and maintenance for more than thirty students from across the globe. In 2011 he also launched a scholarship programme at Queens University of Belfast for the MSc in Nursing. In 2008 Russell became a limited partner of Cerno Capital (a private investment office) and is a member of the investment advisory committee to Cernos investment management team. He is also on the investment advisory panel of Kennox Asset Management an Edinburgh based value fund manager. In 2009 Russell was appointed a non-executive director of two UK listed companies the Scottish Investment Trust and the Mid Mynd International Trust. In the same he year he also joined the investment committee of the National Trust for Scotland . Russells book, Anatomy of A Bear- Lessons From Wall Streets Four Great Bottoms published in late 1995 was named as an investment read of the Year in 2006 in the FT and described as a cult classic by the same newspaper. The book is now in its third English language edition and is also available in German, Chinese, Korean.
