Location: Evanston, Il Public/Private: Private Theatre Major: General Bachelors degree for all aspects of theatre (acting, directing, stagecraft). As many as forty productions staged each year. Vast list of successful alumni. Distribution Requirements: Requires eighteen courses outside the department, including two from Math/Science/Technology, three from Individual and Social Behavior, and Three from Humanities and Fine Arts. All distribution and major course must be completed with a grade of C- or higher. Students may not double count courses between their theatre major and any other major, minor, or certicate either inside or outside School of Communications. Students may double count any courses taken for the music theatre certicate with the theatre major. Courses taken outside SoC to satisfy history/ theory/criticism requirement may also be applied to distribution requirements if applicable. Major Courses (15 Credits): Introductory Courses; THEATRE 140- 1,2,3 Theatre in Context (three quarters, includes Production Class). GEN CMN 110-0 Voice for Performance. +One from Following: Either GEN CMN 103 or 1 course selected from PERF ST or RTVF that is open to students outside those departments. One quarter of Theatre 119 (0 credit). Must be taken during Sophomore Year Ten 200- and 300- level courses with a minimum of ve courses at the 300 level or above in theatre, with course from each of the following groups: PERFORMANCE (at least 2 courses) [includes Voice, Acting classes, Stage directing, playwriting, childrens theatre, creative drama] DESIGN/TECHNOLOGY (at least 2 courses) [includes stagecraft, design, makeup, stage management, sound, lighting, costumes, history, painting, graphic arts, textile arts, period drafting and draping] HISTORY, LITERATURE, and CRITICISM (at least 3 courses) [three courses in this category. At least two of the three must be in the same area of study. For a copy of the current academic years listings, see advisor.] Six courses at 200 level or above outside of SoC including at least three courses at the 300 level of above- courses taken to meet the distribution requirement may be used. Electives in SoC and other areas to complete a minimum of 45 courses. Major in Radio/Television/Film: Touches both media production and analysis. Hands-on training in creating, editing, and producing innovative media (includes lms, computer animation, and video installations). Student work regularly wins awards in the U.S. or abroad. Distribution Requirements: Same as Theatre Major. Students may also double count up to two courses for the creative writing for the media certicate and for the RTVF major (but not as part of the six 300-level that must be in RTVF) Major Courses (15 units): All RTVF majors are required to have competency in a modern foreign language equal to four quarters of college study. Competency may be established by placement exam; an AP score of 3,4, or 5; or by completion of the fourth quarter or a higher class. Independt of and in addition to this requirement, for the B.A., students must meet the WCAS language requirement. Intro courses: RTVF 190 Media Construction and a minimum of 3 courses at the 100 or 200 level inside SoC but outside the department. 3 200-level courses: RTVF 220 Analysing Media Texts. RTVF Analyzing Media Contexts. One additional 200-level course in the department, or COMM ST 275. 8 additional courses in the SoC at the 300 and 400 levels including at least 6 courses in the department on 300 and 400 levels. Not more than 1 unit of RTVF Internship and 1 unit RTVF 399 Independent Study may be applied toward the 6 courses required in the department. The remaining internship and 399 units count as elective credits. All Student Organized Seminars (CMN 396) count as electives and must be taken for P/N grade. No more than one Junior Tutorial (CMN 380-7) can count toward the degree, and may count as a major requirement if taught in RTVF. 6 courses at the 200 level or above, outside communication, including at least 3 course at the 300 level or above. Courses taken to meet the distribution requirement may be used to fulll this requirement. Electives in SoC and other areas to complete a minimum of 45 courses. Film and Media Studies Minor: Up to two courses may be double counted toward the lm and media studies minor and another SoC major. Two Intro Courses: RTVF 220-0 Analyzing Media Texts. COMPT LIT 206-0 Literature and Media Five electives from long list. 3 of 5 must be at 300 level or above.

Northwestern offers a MA/PhD in Screen Cultures, an MFA in Directing, and MFA in Writing for the Screen and Stage. Offers Certicate in Creative Writing for the Media (offered to second year students in SoC.) After completion of certicate, portfolio includes: a 30 minute screenplay or video-play; a full-length theatreical play; a full-length screenplay; a script for a television show. Quarter One: Story Structure and The Writing Process. Quarter Two: Writing a Play. Quarter Three: Writing a Feature Length Screenplay. Quarter Four: Writing for Television. Quarter Five: Writing a Full-Length Project. Quarter Six: Revision and the Business. Offers Music Theatre Certicate. Admits 30 students based on vocal, monologue, and dance auditions. Theatre majors enroll in School of Music courses, including two years of voice lessons. 9 Credits required: Voice 102 Beginning Voice, MUSIC 127 Keyboard SKills, VOICE 202 Intermediate Voice, THEATRE 352-1,2 Music Theatre Techniques, THEATRE 367 History of the Lyric Theatre, Dance (Minimum of 6 classes @ .33 units each.) High School Transcript, Teach Recommendation, Standardized Test Scores, and Application Fee of $65. Interviews are optional. Requires SAT or ACT with writing. Recommends two SAT Subject Tests, but not required. SoC recommends 4 years of English, minimum 2 years of foreign language, minimum of 2 Social Studies courses, a minimum 2 Lab science course, and minimum 3 Math courses. Take into account involvement outside the classroom. Use essays to get a better sense of interests, thought processes, and writing ability. Recommendations also add perspective. AP English Language = Minimum Score of 5 equals 2 English 1x credits. AP English Literature = Minimum Score of 5 equals 2 English 1x credits. AP Macroeconomics = Minimum Score of 5 equals 1 Economics 201 credit. AP Music Theory = Minimum Score of 5 equals 1 Gen Music 252 credit. AP US Gov = Minimum Score of 5 equals 1 Poli Sci 2x credit.
