Humans have the nature to progress.

Advanced technology and development have brought us with many modern innovations to ensure us a better living. Same goes for our buildings and infrastructure. New buildings have replaced old ones to meet the current needs of a society. However, there have been controversial debates on whether or not historic buildings should be demolished to make way for new ones. Some buildings have a symbolic or important meaning behind them. For instance, in Malaysia, the A-Famosa fortress has become one of the most significant historic buildings in the country. The building is seen as a symbol of Malaysian history and has been around for more than a century. Most old buildings have become too meaningful to be demolished. Therefore, I strongly agree that we should continue to preserve old buildings especially historic buildings that have been standing for generations. Old buildings should be preserved for their historical value. Every civilization has its own culture. This culture reflects the identity of a civilization and has to be passed down from generation to generation. This culture can be easily shown through their works of art especially their architecture. The new generation should be able to witness the construction of their ancestors with their own eyes. In addition to that, old buildings are also taken as a source of inspiration for creating most modern architectural designs. These buildings are also often used as research subjects for historians. Without these buildings, people of the new generation would not be able to appreciate the value of these marvels. Furthermore, there are not many buildings left with a strong historic value. Demolishing these buildings would be the same as wiping out the history and culture of a society. Maintaining these buildings will bring a great economical value to our nation. Most buildings and structures with strong historic backgrounds will be main tourist attractions for a nation. This is because most tourists are interested to visit buildings that have a depth in history. This can help contribute to our economy as it will spur our tourism industry. If our historic structures are knocked down, our nation will lose its identity along with its economic source of income. Not to mention that preserving old buildings will save cost. This is because it is generally known that the cost to build new buildings is more expensive than the cost of maintaining old ones. It would require a large amount of money alone to demolish a building. By maintaining these buildings, a nation will be able gain economic benefits from them.

Some contradicting opinions argue that by maintaining the historical buildings, wastage of land usage will be occurred. By saying this, the opening of new lands will bring a negative impact towards our environment as more natural habitats such as forests and hills will be wiped out. This statement is supported by saying that most of the building has limited number of floors and does not hold a huge capacity of human activities compared than the tall modern buildings. However, with the advanced technology and creativity of designers nowadays, most of the historical buildings can be renewed and renovated so that it can be suited with current demands of globalization. For example, Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was renovated in early 90s by adding the needs such as electricity and water supply and now it is functioning as one of the main court in the country. In conclusion, historical buildings should be treated the same way as other historical artifacts. The value of a historical building is incomparable as it is one of the stepping stone of the early civilization of a country. If we were to blindly abolish them, they will be lost forever. Thus, I suggest that our government would take actions to preserve the historical buildings as the number of unused lands is still enough to support the new development of new buildings. This is solely because old buildings give a lot of benefits to our country and community. Humans should be able to progress without having to throw their history aside.
