KC for N2O4(g) 2NO2(g) is 0.00466 at 298 K. If a one litre container initially contained 0.8 mole of N2O4, what would be the concentrations of N2O4 and NO2 at equilibrium? Also calculate equilibrium concentration of N2O4 and NO2 if the volume is halved at the same temperature. Fill in the blanks the missing products (one principal organic product in one blank) OH (a) +

Write the chemical reaction associated with the brown ring test. What is oxidation state of Fe in brown ring test. Explain with proper reason. The boiling point of an aqueous solution of a nonvolatile solute is 100.15C. What is the freezing point of an aqueous solution obtained by diluting the above solution with an equal volume of water? The value of K b and K f for water are 0.512C and 1.86C molality-1 respectively.

PART II
1. Three compounds A,B and C, all have the formula C6H10. All three compounds rapidly decolourise Br2 in CCl4. Compound A gives a precipitate when treated with silver nitrate in ammonia, but compound B and C do not. A and B both yield n-hexane when they are treated with excess hydrogen in presence of palladium catalyst. Under these conditions C absorbs only one molar equivalent of H2 and gives a product with formula C6H12. When A is oxidised with hot basic KMnO4 and the resulting solution acidified, the only organic product that can be isolated is n-pentanoic acid. Similar oxidation of B gives only propionic acid and similar treatment of C gives only adipic acid. Find A,B and C and give the reactions involved.

2.

K 2Cr2O7 solution being primary standard, a standard solution of it was prepared by dissolving 0.588g
of it in water whose volume was made to 500 mL by further dilution. 20 mL of this dichromate solution was added to 200 mL sample of water containing Fe2 ions and the solution was made acidic by adding sufficient dil. H2SO4 . The excess dichromate was back titrated with 4.5 mL 0.02 M oxalate ion solution in acid medium. Calculate amount in ppm of iron in the sample assuming that entire iron is present as Fe2 ion. [MW of K2Cr2O7 294 and Fe= 56]

3.

In order to prepare a linear saturated secondary alcohol having five carbon atoms an organic chemist treated acetaldehyde and acetone in a dilute basic solution and got a compound (A). When he analysed the product (A), he identified the alcoholic group to be present along with a carbonyl group. In order to get rid of the carbonyl group he treated (A) with Zn amalgam and excess conc. HCl and got (B). But, for his greatest astonishment, (B) decolourised Br2/H2O. Without being dis-heartened he treated (B) with acidified water and got the product he wanted. Write a sample report involving all the mechanisms and concepts in his reaction sequence. At 25C, the emf of the cell Pb | PbCl2.HCl (0.5 M) || HCl (0.5 M) | AgCl (s) | Ag is 0.49 volts and its temperature coefficient

4.

dE 1.8 104 volt / degree . Calculate dT

(a) the entropy change when 1 gm mol of silver is deposited and (b) the heat of formation of AgCl, if the heat of formation of lead chloride is 86000 cal.
