Hydro Power scenario in Nepal

Nepal has a huge hydropower potential. In fact, the perennial nature of Nepali rivers and the steep gradient of the country's topography provide ideal conditions for the development of some of the world's largest hydroelectric projects in Nepal. Current estimates are that Nepal has approximately 40,000 MW of economically feasible hydropower potential. However, the present situation is that Nepal has developed only approximately 600 MW of hydropower. Therefore, bulk of the economically feasible generation has not been realized yet. 3

Hydrology The hydrological study has been carried out based on the approved water availability series obtained from Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), Nepal. Based on the hydrological and sediment study, the following conclusions and recommendations were made in this level of study: The 100 year design flood is 2040 m3/s at dam site and 2570 m3/s at powerhouse TRT outlet site. Similarly the recommended design flood of 500 years return period for the dam site and powerhouse site are 2720 m3/s and 3400 m3/s respectively. The 1000 years return period flood for the dam site and powerhouse site are 3060 m3/s and 3800 m3/s respectively. The design discharge corresponding Q40 works out to be 60.6 cumec and corresponding Q65 and Q50 works out to be 33.6 cumec and 46.8 cumec respectively .The 90% dependable flow at the dam site is 23.8 cumec. Hydrology of the Project has been worked out based on standard practices being followed in Nepal. There may be some variations in the design discharge / design flood / diversion flood if the same are worked out as per practices prevailing in India

Geology The Project lies in partly in the gritty phyllite and quartzite of the Ranimatta Formation and partly in the quartzite of the Kushma Formation as well as the dolomite of the Lakharpata Formation, Lesser Himalaya, Far Western Nepal. The slope stability of the Project area is good. The dipping of the foliation plane is opposite to oblique to the natural hill slope so favorable condition. The spacing of the discontinuities range from 0.1 to 1 m, roughness and waviness of discontinuities plane is rough and steeped, the joints are filled with sandy clays

Project Description The SR III HE Project is a run of the river scheme having a diversion structure in the form of the Barrage at approximate river bed level at EL 1242.5 m (located on 4

Seti River just downstream of the confluence of Seti River and Bauligad Nala). A 8850 m(tentative) long HRT and a pressure shaft of 460m(tentative)with a surface power house at EL 1080 m(tentative) just upstream of Nanga Bagar village. This scheme would utilize about 60.6 cumecs discharge with a gross head of 177.5m to provide an installed capacity of 89 MW (tentative). The Project area is located

between 135 and 145 km northwest of Dadheldhura along the Khodpe-Chanipur Road (also named as the Jaya Prithvi Bahadur Singh Highway).

Some of the Unique Features of the Project are as follows:

Seti River-III Hydropower Project was first identified during the screening and ranking study conducted by Canadian International Water and Energy Consultant (CIWEC) and Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) in 1996.

An ordinary a hydrometric gauging station with vertical staff gauges had been already established in the West Seti River at Chainpur (about 500 m upstream from proposed dam site of this Project) by DHM since May 1990 to collect daily water level and measure flow at different season at the proposed dam site.

The height of Diversion structure is 12 m (tentative). No Rehabilitation & Resettlement issues. Very less submergence as this is a ROR scheme. Hydrology favourable.

Project Status . 5 The Project is at investigation stage. PFR report has been prepared. Topographical Survey completed. Geological mapping and Geotechnical study completed. Hydrology and Sediment study completed. Site office has established.
