Former
chiefs
receive
award
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Tabernacle Sun
At the regular meeting of
the Indian Mills Fire Company
and Shamong EMS on Thurs-
day, April 5, longtime mem-
bers Paul Miller and John
Smith were honored with the
Presidents Special Recogni-
tion Award by the 200 Club of
Burlington County.
The two men, both former
chiefs and now assistant
chiefs, were the first recipients
of the newly created award,
said fire company president
Stanley Rowe.
Paul is the first assistant
chief and John is the second
assistant chief right now, he
said.
Miller also currently holds
the position of vice-president,
and Smith is a past president.
They go out with the emer-
gency squad for major calls,
as they run the first-responder
team among various other ac-
tivities within the company,
Rowe said.
As president of the fire
company, I picked these two
guys who have been with the
fire company as long as I have
been, he said, which is more
than 30 years in both of their

Erin Lawler understands the
pain that comes from bad deci-
sions all too well.
A drunken driver on the Outer
Banks in North Carolina killed
her younger sister, Shana, and
three other local girls from the
Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict in an accident in April 1999.
Lawler is now a substance
awareness coordinator at Seneca
High School, a career path that
emerged after the tragic accident.
My heart is focused on keep-
ing the message alive, she said.
Lawler is coordinating the 14th
Annual Precious Gems 5K Memo-
rial Run on April 28 at 9 a.m. at
Seneca High School.
Racing for better decisions
The pre-registration deadline
for the run is Thursday, April 21,
and it costs $12 for students and
$15 for adults to participate.
Participants can also sign up
the day of the run between 8 a.m.
and 8:45 a.m. Students will pay
$15 and adult tickets cost $20.
At 9:10 a.m., a 1.5-mile fun run
or walk will also be held.
According to Lawler, the run is
a rain or shine event that will
scale the perimeter of the school
and end on the track.
The school has posted road
signs to advertise the run to the
community. Many of the partici-
pants are students affiliated with
Seneca High School, but we do
have a significant number of
members from the community,
she said.

Reason for run has
evolved over time
About 300 people attended last
years run.
Community involvement over
the years has increased, she said,
which is usually the opposite
with time.
This, to Lawler, is impressive
and encouraging.
All proceeds from the event
will be used for preventive pro-
grams for Seneca students and
scholarships, Lawler said.
I get excited that the money
we raise goes to our kids, she
said. We do some really neat,
amazing things in this building.
The reason for the run has
evolved over time, she explained.
It began in memory of the
girls, but its blossomed into
something much more than that,
she said.
Nowadays, the Precious Gems,
the name given to the four girls
who lost their lives, are a symbol
of the power of decision-making,
Lawler explained.
They didnt have a decision to
be made, they had the decision
made for them.
One bad choice
It was early afternoon. My
family, in August, had actually
moved down to the outer banks
from Medford, Lawler said.
Shanas friends had taken a
bus to spend the latter part of
break with Shana and my family.
The morning that this hap-
pened, Shana actually was at
work, Lawler said.
Megan Blong, Amanda Geiger,
Angela McGrady and Mike
Horner headed out to pick her up
from work for a day at the beach.
They were in the third in a line
of cars, trying to make a left turn
on to a main bypass.

Special to The Sun
Shamong residents Amanda Mau, Monica Fischl-Degnan and Mindy McKeown are beading neck-
laces to support Miracle for Mateo. The necklaces will be sold to support families that have chil-
dren with heart defects. The event took place at Lord of Life on Thursday, March 29. Parents and
friends of Grace Place students volunteered their time to make 20 necklaces and raised $175 for
the Swedesboro-based charity.

in our opinion
W
hile virtually no one antici-
pates property values to
skyrocket anytime soon,
there are signs that the housing mar-
ket is beginning to get back on its feet.
Prices are up. Sales are solid. And
while foreclosures and short sales will
keep a lid on prices for some time, it
appears the market is moving in the
right direction. A report from The As-
sociated Press cited the National Asso-
ciation of Realtors point that Febru-
arys sales pace was the second high-
est since May 2010.
So what does that matter? Obviously
it matters a lot if youre buying or sell-
ing a home. But, even if youre not,
your homes value affects how you
handle your budget.
From a practical side, a higher
value might allow you to tap into your
homes equity. You might spend that
extra cash on home improvements, for
example, which helps to boost the
economy.
A homes value also has a psycho-
logical impact. Even though your
home might not be on the market,
there is a sense of security knowing
that you have your homes value to fall
back on if times get tough. That, in
turn, might prompt you to feel more
comfortable about buying new furni-
ture, taking a vacation, etc. Again, all
of these things help to spur the econo-
my.
To issue an all is well with the
housing market proclamation would
be premature. The aforementioned
distressed properties will continue to
be a burden. Credit is still tight. Inter-
est rates remain low, but could rise, sti-
fling a robust recovery.
But, hopefully, the days of watching
your homes value plummet are over,
or about over. The economy is showing
signs of growing albeit at a modest
pace. The reports indicate that more
people once again are looking at home
ownership as they feel better about
their employment status.
All of which is good news for home-
owners.
Home, sweeter home?
The numbers show that the real estate market might be stabilizing
Maybe the worst is over
Its not yet time to pronounce the
housing market as cured, but recent
reports indicate that it perhaps has
stabilized. Thats good news for both
homeowners and an economy that
continues to grow.
Lawler: Think about what you do
As they made their turn, their car
was T-boned at the speed of 65 mph by
Melissa Marvin, a drunken driver,
whom Lawler says made no attempts to
brake.
That day, Megan, Angela and Amanda
were killed, she said. Shana held on for
six days.
Horner sustained serious injuries but
survived. These days, he is doing well, said
Lawler, and living in Philadelphia.
Marvin is living in prison under a 65-
year sentence and rightfully so, Lawler
said.
She killed four people. She took four
lives, Lawler said. My sister and the
three kids had no say in that.
There needs to be more accountability
and consistency in the legal system, she
said.
There are four crosses on the side of
the road that are four daughters, four sis-
ters, four friends, she said. Theres no
anger in my heart, but to me, there has to
be accountability.
Preventing tragedies
Many of the crosses, though not all, on
the side of roads express deaths caused by
drugs or alcohol, she said.
Lawler challenges the community and
students: Think about what you do.
Connecting words with actions is impor-
tant, she said.
She runs the anti-drug squad, where she
teaches students to make a difference in
their communities and become role mod-
els.
On April 20, she will chat with juniors in
their health classes about making whole-
some decisions in the hopes of showing
how her own outlook on life was severely
shifted from one persons faulty thoughts
and one persons decision to get behind the
wheel while drunk.
Its not an easy thing to do, she said.
Its very personal. We have an opportuni-
ty to really get in the kids hearts and chal-
lenge them in a way thats pretty unique
and dynamic and hopefully long-term.
The parents of the Precious Gems have
brought their voices into the community
over the years, as well.
A number of the parents are still in-
volved in terms of public speaking, she
said.
Some of the parents are still involved
with the legal system and sit in court-
rooms, she explained.
They attend juvenile justice system pre-
sentations and visit the Center for Mindful
Living and Trauma Recovery in
Moorestown.
Up until a few years ago, the parents
would also present in area high schools
and middle schools, but over time, the task
became too emotionally draining, she said.
Lawler hopes to keep the annual run
going and teach her students to speak up
and have voices.
Life is fragile, she said. We dont have
control of everything of course, but a lot of
it comes down to decisions we make.

Board approves full-day
kindergarten program
At its meeting on March 28, the
Shamong Township Board of Ed-
ucation approved the develop-
ment of a full-day kindergarten
program in the Shamong Town-
ship School District, beginning
with the 2012-2013 school year.
In September, students attend-
ing kindergarten in the district
will follow the same schedule as
IMS students in grades one to
four, beginning their day at 8:45
a.m. and with dismissal at 3:10
p.m.
Transportation will be provid-
ed within the same bus routes as
other IMS students.
District officials say theyre ex-
cited to provide this opportunity
of a full-day schedule for kinder-
garten students. Administration
and teachers have been research-
ing various aspects of this con-
cept, and the board supports their
recommendation. Because the
Common Core State Standards
set the course for students to
achieve at higher levels, the stan-
dards upon exiting kindergarten
are now very rigorous. A full-day
kindergarten program provides
crucial opportunities for children
to build upon previous experi-
ences that sustain the develop-
ment of their cognitive, social
and emotional skills.
The program will provide a re-
laxed, unhurried school day, with
more time for a variety of experi-
ences and a greater opportunity

it an honor to recognize them.
They dont do it for the recog-
nition or a paycheck, he said.
They do it because its in their
blood, its in their heart. They do
it because they want to, not be-
cause they have to.
Clifford and Smith were to
have presented the award. The
idea of the award being presented
in front of their peers made it
much more compelling, he said.
Its really something that will
mean something to them, I hope,
Clifford said.
The fire company, based out of
Shamong, provides assistance to
neighboring companies when
needed, including Tabernacle.
We organized in 1942, said
Rowe.
The company has always been
a volunteer organization.
About eight years ago, the EMS
crew was formed, and both Miller
and Smith were instrumental in
getting that started, he said.
The company has been operat-
ing on the same budget for the
past 20 years, he said. Weve
never asked for an increase.
The budget for 2012 is current-
ly being formed, he said.
This year, the company asked
for a new fire truck.
The people in town are really
good with donations, he said,
noting the company routinely
sends out requests for donations
in May and September.
To learn more about the Indian
Mills Fire Company, volunteer, or
donate, visit www.indianmills-
fire.com.
Donation checks may also be
sent via mail to Indian Mills Vol-
unteer Fire Company, 48 Willow
Grove Road, Shamong, 08088.

At the last township commit-
tee meeting, we introduced our
2012 budget. Im happy to say
there was no increase in munici-
pal taxes proposed for this year.
In fact, we were able to reduce
our operating budget by about
$140,000 or about 5 percent.
As any of us who work to bal-
ance our family budgets know, it
is quite a task given the current
economic climate.
Township administrator Sue
Onorato and chief financial offi-
cer Donna Condo are to be con-
gratulated on the excellent work
they did in preparing this budget.
We were able to maintain our
aid to the fire company and am-
bulance squad at $134,000 for this
year. These volunteer organiza-
tions work very hard to protect
our community and I would
urge everyone to give what they
can when you get their annual
fund drive mailer.
We will be receiving a $250,000
grant from the county that will
be used toward the completion of
phase II of the soccer complex at
Stoneycreek.
The committee approved the
plans presented by our engineer
and they will now be submitted
to the Pinelands Commission for
final approval. At the same time,
we are preparing the request for
proposals (RFP) that will be used
to solicit bids. We hope to get this
project underway by mid-June
and strongly encourage local
companies experienced with
these types of projects, to contact
Onorato at the municipal build-
ing to acquire a bid package.
We had applied for a grant
from the state Department of
Transportation to continue our
work on road repairs in the town-
ship. Unfortunately, our request
was declined. We recognize a
number of roads in the town are
beginning to need attention.
Without help from the state, it ap-
pears
that we
will have
to plan on
taking
those
projects
on our-
selves.
As most
of you
know, we
have been
extreme-
ly conser-
vative in the use of debt.
In fact, the only debt the town-
ship has is a low-interest Green
Acres loan that was used to com-
plete the softball fields at Dingle-
town. Though we continue to
view debt as a last resort, it may
be the only way we can attack the
road repair issues in the town.
On the plus side, with interest
rates so low and the townships
excellent credit, we should be
able to borrow money at very at-
tractive rates should the commit-
tee decide to choose that path to
fund infrastructure mainte-
nance.
We will be discussing our op-
tions regarding this issue at fu-
ture township meetings.
For those of you who are inter-
ested, copies of the budget can be
obtained at the municipal build-
ing and also at the Medford Pub-
lic Library. We will invite public
comment and discussion regard-
ing the budget at our May 1st
meeting, before the committee
members decide on final ap-
proval.
As always, I am looking for is-
sues that you would like to see
discussed in this column and I
can be reached at
jashevelew@shamong.net.
