THE MARK AND NANCY GARNER LEADERSHIP Student Scholarship ($1,500 per year for four years for a total of $6,000) Criteria and Conditions for Awards
1. Applications will be considered from Horry and Georgetown counties of South Carolina, and our circulation distribution area in Southern Brunswick County of North Carolina. Exceptions must be approved by the Foundation. 2. This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student, based on the students motivation, potential for academic achievement, leadership and involvement in community events and civic activities. 3. Scholarship holder must be a full-time (as defined by the college) student and must maintain a minimum of 2.5 grade-point average. All applicants must be entering a college in the fall as a freshman at a two-year junior college, a technical/community college or a four-year college or university. 4. The yearly scholarship amount will be divided by the number of semesters or quarters in the school year. The first-semester or first-quarter funds will be released by the institution when the scholarship is awarded. Release by the institution of the remaining equal portions of the award will occur at the beginning of consecutive semesters or quarters if the student maintains a 2.5 grade point average in the previous session. Scholarship funds may be applied to tuition and other forms of educational assistance for the student, as long as the funds are paid to the institution. The student will be required to submit to the Foundation his/her transcript so that grades can be verified. 5. Two letters of recommendation should be submitted with the application. One letter must be from a teacher or guidance counselor. 6. The Foundation Board of Directors will interview final candidates. 7. In accepting this award, both the student and his/her parents give consent to the release of the students grades and other relevant information to the Foundation at the end of each semester or quarter. This is agreed to by the signature of both student and parent/legal guardian on the application. 8. Incomplete applications will not be considered. 9. Applications must be RECEIVED (not postmarked) by MAY 14, 2012.

History of The Sun News Educational Foundation Scholarship


The Sun News Educational Foundation was founded in 1984 by The Sun News publisher, Michael Pate and other members of the executive staff to promote and encourage technical and academic excellence and advancement among area students, worthy individuals, causes and projects. With its eye on a long-term program for educational development, the Foundation has over the course of its 27 years, provided more than $110,000 in scholarships to 84+ high school students within our distribution area of Horry, Georgetown and southern Brunswick counties, recognized influential teachers and most recently, partnered with The Sun News on the Regional Spelling Bee, which hosts approximately 50 local school students who compete to go on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. P.J. Browning, current publisher of The Sun News and president of The Sun News Educational Foundation has continued the Foundations commitment to providing financial assistance for students who wish to pursue higher education. It is both a responsibility and a privilege to provide local youth with the financial means necessary to pursue their educational goals and fulfill lifelong dreams Ms. Browning said.
