Science Lesson Observation - 60 mins January 27th, 2012 Topic Grade 1- Senses Grade 2- Hot and Cold Temperatures

Grade 1's will begin with independent or partner work on their senses poster booklet. This booklet reviews each sense that we talked about. Grade 2's will come to the carpet with me. Grade 2 lesson plan - What is Heat? General learner expectations - measure temperature in degrees Celsius - describe how heating and cooling can often change them...i.e. water ice Materials: kettle, 2 plastic bowls, food coloring, thermometers Introduction/Background - Discuss previous lesson of hot and cold items. Explain to children we are going to discuss what heat is and by doing so we will have to talk about what our universe is made up of....atoms and molecules. Ask students what is a heat source? What happens to our environment when the sun is out? Explain that everything is made up of atoms and how they move depends on their heat. ACTIVITY: Let students pretend to be molecules. First have them stand still and close together. Then have the students wiggle and then walk and move around to demonstrate more energy entering the system. Have them move faster and jump up and down as even more energy enters the system. Then have the students stop and notice where they are. They should be much farther apart and should feel much warmer than they were originally. Explain the faster the molecules move the warmer the item will be. Although molecules are too small to see, we can still measure their movement.

EXPERIMENT: To do this experiment you will need 2 clear bowls and food color. Fill one clear bowl with hot water and another with the same amount of cold water. When the water is still, put a drop of food color into the center of each bowl. As the water molecules bump into the food color molecules, the food color will move around. Since the hot water molecules are moving faster, they will bump into the food color harder and more frequently causing it to spread more quickly than the food color in the cold water. Gather back at carpet and explain that heat has energy. Thermometers do not create the heat rather measures it. Students will then respond to the activity in their science journals. They will then work independently or with a partner on two experiments from the science booklets. Evaluation of student learning: science journals and science booklets This lesson will be great background knowledge for the next topic - solids and liquids Grade 1 Lesson Plan Sense of Smell

Materials: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Five cups with holes in lid, numbered Vanilla, orange slices, perfume, vinegar, cinnamon Crayons White paper and colored construction paper Glue Student workbooks

As the grade 2's are independently working, call over grade 1's to carpet. Introduction/Background We will look at two pictures on the smart board and discuss good and bad smells. I will record these on the whiteboard. Discuss previous

knowledge about what we know about how our sense of smell helps usi.e. Smelling rotten food, smoke: danger of fire, etc. ACTIVITY Part I: 1. Before class, place different objects in numbered cups. Make sure there are holes in the lids for smelling. 2. Have students smell the cups and try to identify what it is. 3. Tell students to draw a picture of or write what they think it is in their science workbooks. Part II: 1. Pass around last cup and have each student smell and discuss what reminds them of this smell. 2. Tell students to draw and color a picture related to the smell. 3. Outline their picture with glue. 4. Help students sprinkle the spice on their picture. 5. Let pictures dry. 6. Students respond in their science journals. Evaluation of student learning: 1. Were the students able to use their sense of smell to identity the different items? 2. Science journals
