Notes from the General Manager by Kevin Flint

Welcome
To Paradise
F From the gleaming resort town of Santa Barbara to the
picturesque semi-rural landscapes of Paso Robles, the
Central Coast is indeed its own special paradise. And with
its award-winning wineries, world-class restaurants and accommodations to suit
every taste, you can begin to understand why the Central Coast has earned its well-
deserved reputation as a premiere weekend getaway.
It is our distinct privilege to bring you stories about the people and places that
make this area so special. To showcase and celebrate the Central Coast’s very best is
to share with you some of our own favorite memories. In fact, we are only too
thrilled to offer these pages to help you plan your special journey through Wine
Country – so that your visit with us may be equally unforgettable.
In each issue of Wine Country This Week we strive to highlight the very best
that the Central Coast has to offer. While browsing our preferred tasting rooms,
winemaker profiles and carefully chosen feature stories, you’ll gain insight into the
multitude of treasures awaiting you here. And by using our easy-to-read maps and
events calendar to assure pleasant travel to your favorite destinations, a memorable
stay on the Central Coast is all but assured.

In this weeks’ issue, be especially sure to learn about:

• SLO Wine – celebrating a way of life;
• Carina Cellars – known for Rhône varietals;
• Costa De Oro – why it’s not your typical tasting room;
Kevin Flint has lived most
of his life on the Central Coast, • Claiborne & Churchill Vintners and their delighfully different wines;
calling Santa Barbara home • Hospice du Rhône – where you can enjoy many varieties of Rhône wines.
with his wife and two children.
His love for the region includes When Galileo said “Wine is sunlight held together by water” can we help but
a passion for its outdoor spaces, wonder if he was contemplating a paradise such as our spectacular Central Coast?
as well as for the stories of We welcome and encourage you to come drink wine, make new friends and

Meridian Vineyards and his son Matt opened Ortman Family Winery
in SLO and started taking advantage of the cool-climate by growing
all of the aforementioned wines as well as several Italian varietals.
“We have a longer growing season here with mild winters, but that
marine influence that keeps things cool in the spring and summer
months,” says Matt Ortman. “The Chardonnay that we’re making is
full of those pear and tropical flavors and with the cool climate you
get that mineral taste that you really cannot find anywhere else. No
question, we’re here because of the quality of the fruit.”
Tangent Winery, a SLO Wine member, is the first producer in
America to focus solely on white wines. Taking pride in their “no
reds” philosophy, Tangent produces Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris,
Albarino (an Italian varietal) and Pinot Blanc. Again, it’s the cool
climate of this Central Coast region that drives the growing and the
unique approach to producing only white wines. Both Tangent and
Ortman are small operations producing less than 5,000 cases a year
each.
SLO is likely to stay fairly slow, too. There isn’t a lot of room for
growth beyond the vineyards that have been planted and so the
wineries that are here focus on small lots of high end, in-demand
wines. “It’s not growing tremendously, as we are limited geographi-
cally in this region. A few small wineries are popping up but nothing
like what’s happening in neighboring regions. I would say we had
one new winery last year,” says Gray.
Roll Out the Barrels, then, is a celebration of those intimate things
that make winemaking worth doing – family, friends and community.
Far from attempting to copy Napa Valley or Sonoma County, the SLO
wine community is interested in staying local. “[The winemakers]
want to make the best wine from the fruit they are given,” says Gray.
“Which, given our terroir makes their job very enjoyable.”
Roll Out the Barrels begins May 3rd at the Barrels in the Plaza
event at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 a piece for Thursday, $45 for the
passport tasting May 5th and 6th. Some wineries are holding private
winemaker dinners on Friday, May 4th. For ticket sales and more
information, go to www.slowine.com or call (805) 541-5868.

is open to the music genres of: jazz, rock, blues, new age, acoustic,
country, folk, soft rock, reggae and adult contemporary.
The Grand Prize winner of the previous Winery Music Awards
competition, held in 2005, was Arroyo Grande’s rock group, Threes
and Nines, who is releasing their first CD this year after winning a
recording contract with RNB Music (www.rnbtunes.com), a Los
Angeles-based record label. The group’s self-titled CD, will be distrib-
uted worldwide by Fontana Distribution, a division of Universal
Music. A second CD, titled Blend, featuring a compilation of many of
the 2005 artists complete with artist bios and liner notes on the Paso
Robles Wine Region, will also be released by RNB Music this summer
and will be available for sale at all Winery Music Awards concerts and
the website.
The Winery Music Awards qualifying concerts are held on one
Saturday each month from June to September, with the Final compe-
tition and Awards show on Saturday, October 6. Confirmed hosting
wineries include Maloy-O’Neill Winery (www.maloyoneill.com) and
Silver Horse Winery (www.silverhorse.com). “I had the opportunity
to be a part of the 2005 Winery Music Awards by pouring my wine for
some of the judges at a private tasting. I am excited to be a host winery
for this year’s Winery Music Awards. Music and wine are a perfect
pairing and this event celebrates that pairing perfectly,” says Shannon
O’Neill of Maloy-O’Neill Winery. Stephen Kroener of Silver Horse
Winery adds, “We’re thrilled to be a host venue for the 2007 Winery
Music Awards. We just finished building our event center and hosting
the Winery Music Awards is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our
new facility.” Additional select wineries will host the other 3 concerts.
Those wineries will be announced once the arrangements are
completed.
The Winery Music Awards competition, founded and produced by
Kathy Kelly Productions, Inc., (www.kellyprods.com) was created out
of the growing popularity of quality musical performances at many
wineries throughout California. “Some wineries offer fine music,
others offer award-winning wines. We’re offering award-winning
music at the region’s finest wineries,“ says Kathy Kelly, creator of the
event and 17-year veteran in television direct response marketing.

val Fifteenth Annual

Hospice du Rhône
by Michael Rockich
What is it about Rhône style wines that attracts? What are some
descriptors that bring to mind Rhône style wines? Here are a few
that may work: exciting, fun, electric, friendly, summertime, picnic,
barbeque. And that’s not to forget the rich, thick, luscious, dark
Syrahs that can be plenty serious.
A great place to taste the multitude of Rhône style wines is at the
world’s largest annual celebration of domestic and international
Rhône style wines, the Hospice du Rhône (HdR). The HdR will
take place at the California Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles,
May 3-5. Red, white, and pink wines will gush as vintners from
around the globe pour. The theme for the 15th annual HdR is
appropriately, “Annie get your glass.”
There will be ample opportunity to get an introduction to, or
enhance your continuing education about Rhône style wines.
Several seminars will focus on various wines, vintners, or regions of
Rhône style wines. Winegrowers will be present at seminars to pour
and discourse on their wines.
For those anxious to taste a variety of Rhône style wines, the
Friday Tasting and the Grand Tasting on Saturday featuring wines
from around the planet are the places to be. It would be quite an
accomplishment to taste most of the wines at these extensive tast-
ings. As usual, vintners will pour.
There will be ample opportunity to pair Rhône wines with fine
cuisine. On Friday the Rhône Fête Feast luncheon takes place. The
Feast is usually held outdoors under the shade of oaks. At the
Friday evening Dine Around chefs from top restaurants in the area
will prepare special dinners featuring gourmet cuisine for guests.
The following day the Saturday Luncheon is held, and will be
followed by the One-of-a Kind Barrel Auction. The Farewell Gala
dinner on Saturday evening usually features grilled fare, and is an
occasion to taste a wide variety of Rhône style wines by sampling,
sharing and exchanging bottles with other guests.
The HdR begins Thursday with the annual bowling tournament
for fans and vintners. Friday and Saturday mornings continental
breakfast is waiting for guests at the fairgrounds featuring fresh fruit
and cheeses, French pastries and fresh roasted coffee. Of course
one of the best things about the HdR is visiting with old friends,
and making new ones.
For more information about the Hospice du Rhône, go online to
www.hospicedurhone.com, or telephone (805) 784-9543.

included on the 46 West Passport. The passport is your map to the
Westside, including descriptions and hours for each winery. Just like
a travel passport you will get a unique stamp from each winery.
Once you get 7 stamps you will receive a beautifully designed poster
of all the participating wineries labels. When your passport is full
with all thirteen stamps, your gift is another poster signed by all of
the winemakers and entry into a quarterly drawing for prizes from a
weekend stay at one of the groups hotel sponsors to a guided tasting
tour. Throughout the year the group puts on other events such as Tax
Revolt Weekend and West Fest. West Fest is the big event of the year.
All thirteen wineries come together to pour great wines while guests
listen to blues music and enjoy delicious food from local caterers. For
more information, check out the 46 West Wineries website at
www.paso46westwineries.com.

AMBROSIA ®
ow do you select one wine club to match the experience of a visit to the Wine Country

H and all the great wines you can taste?

Ambrosia opened for business more than 15 years ago in the heart of Napa Valley to pro-
vide the full experience of visiting the Wine Country. What makes Ambrosia so unique
is the variety of wines they include in their wine clubs. They don’t buy “private labels” or negotiant
wines; every wine you receive comes from their Napa Valley neighbors and other great regions – from
the wineries, vineyards or winemakers you visit when you come to the Wine Country.
From carefully cellar-aged Cabernet Sauvignon to the hottest new wineries, Ambrosia
has a wine club that matches your Wine Country experience. To contact Ambrosia Wines, call 1-800-
435-2225 or check out their wines and clubs at www.ambrosiawine.com.

Wine Club Details

No matter which Ambrosia club you join, these are the constants:
• Monthly or bi-monthly two bottle shipments – “the best-of-the-best” – delivered right to your door.
• Return any wines for a full refund, and no minimum number of wines to buy, ever.
• No membership fee and you may cancel at any time.
• A 15% exclusive club-member discount on all wines online plus monthly tasting notes,
recipes and direct access to a wine expert to answer your questions.
• For a limited time, new members will receive the ultimate book “WHAT to DRINK with WHAT you EAT:
The Definitive Guide to Pairing Food with Wine, Beer, Spirits, Coffee, Tea – Even Water – Based on Expert Advice from America’s
Best Sommeliers.”
• All shipments consist of two bottles; prices below are per shipment and do not include shipping and applicable taxes.
Private Tasting Wine Club – Each month, you’ll get two of California’s premier Cabernet and Bordeaux-style releases. You’ll come to know
exquisite wines from established wineries as well as the hottest, top-rated newcomers. Definitely the club for those who appreciate truly
unique wines to drink today or add to their collection ($100-125).
Aged Cabernet Wine Club – This one-of-a-kind wine club features flawlessly cellared releases from an incomparable collection of California’s
finest Cabernets. Each month you’ll receive prized rarities, sometimes in limited supply or not easily available anywhere. Occasionally, they’ll
offer a top producer’s aged wonder along with its youthful counterpart for you to explore. A taste of nirvana, pure and simple ($125-150).
Extreme Cabernet Wine Club – This club lives up to its name with Cabernet Sauvignon and Red Meritage wines from exceptional wineries
you’ve read about, but can’t easily find. Highly prized and rare wines that you and your friends will talk about for weeks afterward – or at
least until your next Extreme Cabernet shipment arrives ($150-175).
At Ambrosia, you also have access to other classic varietals from California like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel
and Cabernet Franc. Here are two more ways to enjoy all that California’s most respected wineries have to offer:
• Discovery Series Wine Club – Members experience the best that the Wine Country has to offer at the best possible price: two bottles each
month of carefully selected wine – from some rising stars and tailored to your preference for reds, whites and both.
Your choice of red, white or both ($29.90).
• Masters Series Wine Club – The perfect club for lovers of top-rated, highly sought-after, hand-selected wines from legendary producers to
off-the-beaten-track wineries known only to the Wine Country insiders like Ambrosia – every month it will be love at first sip.
Your choice of red, white or both ($45-65).
