Paso Robles and their Simi Valley restaurant. The Grandes did much
of the work themselves.
“If you want to do it right, it’s hard work,” said Francesco. “We
were planting vines, pulling weeds.”
The vineyards are planted in an east-to-west direction, maximizing
sun exposure to achieve desired ripeness. The vines produce small
yields, leading to intensely flavored fruit.
Falcon Nest was bonded in 2004 and, finally, they decided to sell
the restaurant and move permanently to Paso.
“It was getting too hectic,” said Francesco. “We needed to make a
choice.”
They never looked back. Falcon Nest is now producing about
5,000 cases annually, and the Grandes say they are in a position to
steadily increase that amount over the next several years. They’ve
recently retained some seller representatives to help market Falcon
Nest wines to other regions of the state and nationwide.
Grande, an effervescent gentleman, only sounds a weary note
when he speaks of keeping up with the myriad – and ever-changing
– state laws governing shipments of wines to consumers.
“That’s the hardest part,” he laments. “Making the wine is the
easiest part of my life.”

feature five original
music artists competing for a spot at the final competition on October
7 and a chance to win prizes, cash and a breakthrough recording
contract.
The summer-long series of concerts brings together a variety of
musical genres performed by artists across the country – from Los
Angeles, CA to Portland, OR to New York City.
“This music competition showcases the extraordinary “undiscov-
ered” talent in original music,” says Kathy Kelly, producer of the
Winery Music Awards. “Anyone who appreciates quality original
music should come to any one of the elimination round concerts to
hear it for themselves. And the winery atmosphere makes it even more
enjoyable.”
A total of twenty unsigned, original music artists compete at the
Winery Music Awards Semi-Final Elimination Round concerts, held
one Saturday each month from June to September, with the Final
competition on Sunday, October 7. The Final Competition will feature
the winners of each Elimination Round in addition to two “wild card”
winners who earn the next two highest scores among all artists.
Founded and produced by Kathy Kelly Productions, Inc., the
competition was created out of the growing popularity of quality
musical performances at many wineries throughout California. Music
and entertainment industry professionals judge artist performances in
the categories of Originality, Musicianship and Marketability to the
prime wine-consuming market – men and women aged 21 to 54.
Attendees enjoy fine wine, food and quality original music in a variety
of genres surrounded by rows of vineyards and stacks of wine barrels.
The breakdown of scores earned by each artist is posted on the
website for the Winery Music Awards, www.winerymusicawards.com.
Each show is hosted by Andrew Firestone, general manager of Fire-
stone Winery, and once featured on TV’s “The Bachelor,” and co-host
Janie Terrazas, a Los Angeles-based TV personality and model.

WEST admission to the festival to hear Rockin’ Blues. The centerpiece of the
weekend is the festival where each winery will pour their award-
winning wines. Your ticket also becomes your raffle number for great
gifts including two six-liter wine bottles etched and hand-painted with
the WestFest logo. Over three hundred guests coming from as far away
as Washington State attended the first annual event. The event has
limited seating and tickets are sold in advance by the participating
wineries. Time, price, food and entertainment to be announced.
About Highway 46 West Wineries Group
In 2004, thirteen wineries on Highway 46 West formed the
Highway 46 West Wineries Group. This group was formed to promote
the tasting rooms of the beautiful west side and to make people aware
of the uniqueness of 46 West and the wines produced there. Paso
Robles Wine Country is as unique and inviting as the people who have
dedicated themselves to nurturing the vineyards and crafting fine
wines. Visitors to Highway 46 West find the road less traveled is often
marked by the thrill of discovery in this uncongested region. It’s an
area where hospitality is first among a long list of qualities … where
being friends and neighbors is as important as producing stellar wines.
Highway 46 West is one thread that weaves among the vineyards and
wineries connecting longtime estates with exciting new producers.
Rolling hills, majestic oaks and lush vineyards await the wine lover at
every turn. The tasting rooms of Highway 46 West invite you to enjoy
our neighborhood, relax under the spell of our friendly environment
and savor life while sipping our spectacular wines.
The participating wineries consist of Brian Benson Cellars,
Castoro Cellars, Dark Star Cellars, Doce Robles, Eagle Castle, Fratelli
Perata, Grey Wolf, Hunt Cellars, JanKris Winery, Midnight Cellars,
Peachy Canyon, Windward Vineyard and Rotta Winery and are all
included on the 46 West Passport. The passport is your map to the
Westside, including descriptions and hours for each winery. Just like
a travel passport you will get a unique stamp from each winery.
Once you get seven stamps you will receive a beautifully designed
poster of all the participating wineries labels. When your passport is
full with all thirteen stamps, your gift is another poster signed by all
of the winemakers and entry into a quarterly drawing for prizes from
a weekend stay at one of the groups hotel sponsors to a guided
tasting tour. Throughout the year the group puts on other events
such as Tax Revolt Weekend and West Fest. West Fest is the big
event of the year. All thirteen wineries come together to pour great
wines while guests listen to blues music and enjoy delicious food
from local caterers. For more information, check out the 46 West
Wineries website at www.paso46westwineries.com.
