Brycen Waters Professor Daly Internship Report (First 3 weeks) February 8, 2012

So far my internship has gotten off to a fantastic start. I have spent allot of time learning and researching all facets of student affairs/ student development. First and foremost, a major part of my internships hours have been spent on planning Wet Feet Week. Wet Feet Week is a mini student activates fair. Normally the Student Activates Fair takes place in the fall and all the clubs and organizations gather and table about what their clubs do throughout the semester and the year. However, Wet Feet Week is a chance for clubs to grab the attention of students and transfer students as the beginning part of the second semester gets underway. Planning was a really enjoyable experience, as I got to work with other members of the Student Affairs Staff in planning this first time event. Shadowing actual Student Affairs professionals in one of their actual meetings was a great learning experience for me. Learning how to organize and make large scale, campus-wide events a success was an important part of my learning process for this event. My specific role in planning Wet Feet Week was planning the club showcase day. The club showcase day was an opportunity for all the performing clubs on campus to showcase all of their hard work in a mini performance in the market place of the campus center. We chose this location because around dinner time, 4:30pm-7pm there is a heavy traffic flow of students there, so the event was sure to grab the attention of a large number of students. We had Dance Company, The Allegrettos, Nexxus, Harlequin, and Yorick perform for the two hours, with each

performance lasting about 15 minutes each. A large number of students and faculty/staff were in attendance to the event. The show was a huge success and I feel that my hard work; along with fellow intern, Amanda Schuler, proved our ability to handle the difficulty of planning such an event. The most rewarding part about this experience was at the end of individual club performances, students would approach me asking how they would be able to sign up for clubs such as Harlequin, Yorick, Nexxus, etc. The main goal of the program had been accomplished and therefore I feel that this event was a huge success! I have also begun working with the clubs and organizations that I am student advising during this semester. The clubs that I have chosen are the History Society and the Student Activates Council (SAC). I chose these clubs for a couple of reasons. The reasons I chose the History Society are, one, it directly relates to my academic major (History). The second reason is that this is a smaller club in need of some guidance along the lines of organization and leadership. I feel this is a good opportunity for me to work hands on with one of the main objectives of my internship; exploring different theories of leadership techniques. I chose SAC because they are a very large programming based organization, something that is obviously of importance to the field of student affairs. In the following weeks with my internship, I plan to organize a retreat for the History Society to attend. The main goal of this retreat would be to establish a sense of order to the club meetings, along with help each executive board member become more confident with their leadership positions. I feel this is important for the club because without good leadership, then the club will struggle to accomplish its goals and desires for the semester. I also plan to work with them on organizing a few club field trips and activities. Something to get the club members excited about along with potentially gaining a few new members along the way.
