OZONE LAUNDRY
Ozone water technology has been around for quite a while and has been used in swimming pools for water purification that has less harmful effects. It is only recently that this technology has made its entry into the arena of industrial laundering. Ozone is an unstable, triatomic form of ordinary oxygen. It is formed naturally when oxygen is exposed to ultraviolet light, or when subjected to high voltages such as lightning strikes. Ozone begins to degrade as soon as it is formed and therefore it must be generated on site at the time of use. Ozone is one of the most powerful oxidants available and is generated via the same mechanisms employed by nature: ultraviolet light and powerful electrical fields. Ozone functions similarly to color safe oxygen-based bleaches, removing stains and destroying microbes while leaving fabrics undamaged and colors bright. Ozone cleans fabrics by chemically reacting with insoluble soils through oxidation, causing them to break into smaller molecules that are water-soluble and can be freed from the fabric by ordinary washing machine agitation. Other beneficial processes are also at work, such as how ozone acts on the properties of water, which makes the use of ozone with certain detergents containing alkalis and surfactants significantly more effective. Because of these cleaning and cleaning enhancing properties, ozone can effectively be used in laundry operations in place of environmentally harmful and harsh chemical detergents. Since ozone also has significant sterilization properties, it makes an ideal laundry problem solver.

ADVANTAGES OF USING OZONE IN LAUNDERING Reduction in water heating requirements Reduction in water consumption (30%) Reduction in wastewater volume (30%) Less extensive treatment for wastewater Significant decrease in laundry chemical use and costs (30%). Improved sanitation of linen Increased productivity shorter wash cycle times using ozone Improved labor conditions less heat generation in the workplace in the workplace. Increased cleanliness and attractiveness of linen & fluffiness of towels Increased durability of linen ozone laundries see a tangible increase in linen life (50%)

Summary of Savings
Water Ozone Water Technologies, Inc. estimates water/sewer savings of 30% (+/5%). As most hotel laundries are not individually metered, The OWT savings is based on the difference between pre-ozone and postozone installation wash formulas, the size of individual washing cylinders, and the programmed water levels. Energy OWT estimates energy savings will be not less then 60% (+/-5%) of the current hot water usage, unless hot water is not being used at all. The OWT savings is based on the difference between pre and post ozone installation wash formulas, individual washing cylinders, programmed water levels, ground water temperature, hot water washing temperatures, and heater efficiency.

Chemical OWT estimates chemical savings to be 30% (+/- 5%) of current chemical formulas. The OWT savings is based on the difference between previous years chemical formulas versus the formulas with ozone. Linen Replacement OWT is unable to offer an amount of savings for linen replacement due to uncontrollable fluctuation in linen disappearances and changes in product standard. However, controlled testing by the International Fabricare Institute showed increased linen life as high as 50%. Additional Savings Reduced wash cycles and drying times will also contribute to savings in electricity, labor and machinery maintenance.

CHLORINE Does not kill viruses Kills viruses in 1 to 2 seconds Does not penetrate large groups of Creates Chloroform (a carcinogen) bacteria; splitting kills bacteria Destroys T. H. M. S. (carcinogens) Absorbs through the skin dosages Very toxic to the lungs Non-toxic, dissipates in air Bleaches clothes No bleaching of fabrics Waste water unpleasant Makes water very clear and tasteless Chemicals stay in suspension Has flocculation effect, water becomes Continually works to stabilize Ph OZONE Kills bacteria in up to two hours Kills bacteria in 1 to 2 seconds bacteria held in mucus (saliva) Penetrates and splits groups of immediately Creates chloramines (eye irritant) Does not irritate the eyes in low Kills organics and oxidizes Difficult to handle No handling necessary Requires maintenance Requires maintenance Water smells strongly of chlorine No residual odour Weekly pH adjustment needed crystal clear Can cause skin rashes No skin rashes

To learn more write to us at ozone@akash-laundryexperts.com KEY FEATURES OF LaundrOzone Competitive systems have different features, but there are certain key features of LaundrOzone that define the best ozone laundry system: Small size LaundrOzone is small and lightweight and can be easily installed in tight spaces. Dedicated generators LaundrOzone provides each washing machine with its own ozone generator and air preparation cabinet. Therefore all laundry operations need not be shut down during maintenance or repair. Low power requirement LaundrOzone is an energy efficient system that adds value to the overall savings. Some systems will draw 800 to 1000 watts of electricity, while LaundrOzone requires just 200 Watts. Less power use means lower life time utility costs. Low heat output Producing ozone generates heat. LaundrOzone is more energy efficient and wastes less heat and reduces concerns about cooling and hence gives longer equipment life.

Adjustable ozone production LaundrOzone has an adjustable output that can produce up to 5 times more ozone than other systems. This allows the right amount of ozonecharged water to be produced for each individual washer and load requirement. High system quality LaundrOzone uses a high performance ceramic and high frequency electronic components.

Return on Investment In most instances, the cost of LaundrOzone offers a handsome ROI to the user. Financing options & utility rebates are also available.

ScotchgardTM
Was introduced by the 3M Corporation of U.S.A, fourteen years back only to grow as super brand. In India it is available through the Birla Corporation. It is basically a fabric protector, which when applied onto the fabric, prevents liquid and oily substances getting into the surface of the fabric. It is easy to use and can be bottled and stored away easily. As an added advantage, the fabric also resists loose dirt and stains hence making the fabric long lasting. It is superior to the traditional silicon applications because they were only good at repelling water; ScotchgardTM on the other hand finds application on almost any fabric including carpets. The advantage it has over the silicon coating is that it locks on to the surface and also lets the fabric have its natural sheen and appearance. It is odourless and colourless, so it is not a problem for people with allergies. The current cost (2005) of ScotchgardTM would amount to seventy five rupees per square meter of application on a carpet.

Unprotected fabrics quickly absorb both water and oil spills and stains. This makes it difficult to clean and frequently results in an unsightly appearance. ScotchgardTM Protector forms an
invisible barrier around each fibre to repel both water and oil. Spills bead up on the surface so they can be wiped away easily.

In professional terminology, ScotchgardTM is better known as FC3589 - a fluorochemical product that is highly flammable (has to be stored below 60 degrees Celsius), it contains 1.4% solids and iso-propyl alcohol. It is a clear liquid with a density of 0.18. It is applied onto the fabric with a spray gun in such a manner so as to transfer 12 to 15 grams per meter per square feet of the fabric. It takes approximately 40 minutes to dry and 40 minutes of curing. Another chemical from the same company is FC394 that is specially designed to be applied on to natural and synthetic mix fibers.

Other similar products available are: OZ GUARD It is a product from an Australian company. It is a water-based fluorochemical designed for application on finished upholstery and new carpets. It encapsulates each of the fiber strands to form an invisible shield against dirt and stains. It has a high abrasion resistance which makes it a superior product compared to others and makes it last longer. It takes two to four hours to dry and fifteen days for curing. FORAPERLE It is a fabric protector that is an ATOFINA product. It is a coating applied on the fabric with the help of sprayers under controlled pressure. On spraying, it forms an invisible barrier around each strand of fibre so as to repel both water and oil. The treated surface dissipates the water droplets of spilled water, thus preventing the soaking of the fabric.
