Multi meters or multi tester is like the fire arms of a soldier, but it was indefensible. The interpretation of reading gives technician clues in trouble shooting. (www.scribd.com)

Great advancement in the field of electronics has resulted into invention of multi tester device that made our electronic industry easy. It is a device which can be use to gather data about electrical circuit. Multi meters have two types, the analog and the digital. The first multi meter is the analog. Analog multi meters are electrical test instruments which are used to measure voltage, current, resistance, frequency and signal power.

It is use a needle along a scale. Switched range analog multi meters are very cheap but are difficult for beginners to read accurately, especially on resistance scales. Each type of meter has its advantages. Used as a voltmeter, a digital meter is usually better because its resistance is much higher, 1 M or 10 M, compared to 200 for a analog multi meter on a similar range. On the other hand, it is easier to follow a slowly changing voltage by watching the needle on an analog display. Used as an ammeter, analog multimeters have a very low resistance and are very sensitive. (http://www.electricityforum.com)

Multi meter were invented in the early 1920s as radio receivers and other vacuum tube electronic device became more common. The invention of the first multi tester is attributed to Donald Macadie a British post office engineer, who became dissatisfied with having to carry many separates instruments required of the maintenance of the telecommunication circuits. Macadie invented an instrument which could be measured amperes, volts and ohms so the multi functional meter was named avometer.

The meter comprised a moving coil meter, voltage and precision resistors, and switches and sockets to select the range.

Macadie took his idea to the Automatic Coil Winder and Electrical Equipment Company (ACWEEC, founded in ~1923). The first AVO was put on sale in 1923, and although it was initially a DC, many of its features remained almost unaltered through to the last Model 8.

Pocket watch style meters were in widespread use in the 1920s, at much lower cost than Avometers. The metal case was normally connected to the negative connection, an arrangement that caused numerous electric shocks. The technical specifications of these devices were often crude, for example the one illustrated has a resistance of just 33 ohms per volt, a non-linear scale and no zero adjustment.

And the other one is the digital multi meter. A digital multi meter, or DMM, can be extremely helpful when trying to resolve an electrical problem. DMMs are used all the time in the automotive industry, construction, machine repair, the computer industry, and any other field that involves any sort of electrical work. A digital multi meter is a tool that can measure amps, volts, and ohms. (www.ehow.com)

Thats the two types of multi tester. Well as you may know, a basic multi meter can measure voltages, resistance and current. This tool can be so much useful to have around the house and anyone who plans on doing electrical repairs should most definitely used multi tester for safety reasons. This device is a hand held powered batteries. It is consist of two probes attached o central supply which can be used to set the type of measurement of being performed. The voltages known as the burden voltages, specified in volts per ampere. The value can change depends on the range meter selects. Since the different ranges use shunt resistors. To check for its effect on accuracy and on external circuits operation the meter can be switched in different ranges; the current reading should be the same.

A multi meters measures properties of electric and electronic components. It combines many different values such as resistance, amperage, voltages, ammeter, voltmeter and ohmmeter. To measure the current, the ammeter will be used. The circuit should be cut then put the probes in positive and negative sides. The unit is ampere. Voltmeter is used to measure the potential difference between two points and is measured in volts. It can measure both DC (direct current) and AC (alternating current). Measuring resistance; ohmmeter is used. It measures the value of a component and also through using it the component can also determine if it is conductor or insulator.
