Equilateral Dispersive Prism

Dispersive Equilateral Prisms create less stray light, thus eliminating the higher order problems associated with diffraction gratings. Two high refractive index, low Abbe Vd number glasses have been chosen to provide the maximum dispersive power. The Abbe Vd number is given by Vd = (nd - 1) / (nF - nC ) where nd, nF, and nC are the indices of refraction for the helium d-line (587.6nm), the hydrogen F-line (486.1nm) and the hydrogen C-line (656.3nm), respectively. From the formula, n = nF - nC is a measure of dispersion. A higher value of n yields a lower Vd and thus a greater dispersion. Such prisms are typically used at the minimum angle of deviation. This is the angle where the wavelength of interest travels parallel to the base of the prism, and the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of refraction when measured with recpect to the normal of the prism face at the respective interface. At the minimum angle of deviation, a maximum clear aperture is achieved and reflective loss of P-polarized light is reduced since the angle of incidence is nearly Brewster's angle. For S-polarization, a custom anti-reflective coating can be used to minimize surface reflections.

DRAWING NOT TO SCALE

Pellin Broca Prisms can be used to separate the harmonics of a laser beam or compensate for group velocity dispersion. The light enters and exits the crystal near Brewster's angle, which minimizes reflection losses in P-polarized light. Since the beam undergoes one total internal reflection before exiting the crystal, the angle between the input and exit beams is 90 plus a small angle due to dispersion. The dispersion is less for longer wavelengths.
