JOB SATISFACTION AND EMPLOYEES WORK PERFORMANCE: A CASE STUDY OF PEOPLES BANK IN JAFFNA PENINSULA, SRI LANKA Balasundaram

NIMALATHASAN University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka Associate Professor PhD Valeriu BRABETE University of Craiova Abstract: For the purpose of this study, the data was extracted from the branches of peoples bank operating within Jaffna peninsula, Sri Lanka. Here, we analysed the data by employing simple correlation analysis. In the analysis, it is found that there is a positive relationship between job satisfaction and employees work performance. That is high level of fair promotion, reasonable pay system appropriate work itself and good working condition leads to high level of employees performance. In other words, employees job satisfaction has positive impact on their performance. Moreover, outcome of the research would be helpful to the academicians, practitioners, researchers, planners, and policy makers who are involved in the concerned area. Accepted 1 March, 2011 The term job satisfaction has been conceptualized in many ways. Job satisfaction focuses on all the feelings that an individual has about his/her job. It has been assumed by organizational behavior research that individuals who express high satisfaction in their jobs are likely to be more productive, have higher involvement and are less likely to resign than employees with less satisfaction. It has been already studied by various authors in various spheres. However the researcher has studied job satisfaction of employees in new private sector and select public sector banks specifically in the banking sector of the main metropolitan city named Chennai. Banks are the backbone of our country and therefore their contribution to the nation should be to the fullest. The researcher has done a factor analysis using principle component method to find out the different factors that affect the job satisfaction of banking sectors employees.

A model was designed based on the literature, linking factors of employee motivation with employee motivation and organizational effectiveness. Three hypotheses were build based on the literature and the model and were tested in perspective of the previous studies and literature. The literature and various studies concluded that factors: empowerment and recognition have positive effect on employee motivation. More the empowerment and recognition of employees in an organization is increased, more will their motivation to work will enhance. Also there exists a positive relationship between employee motivation and organizational effectiveness. The more the employees are motive to tasks accomplishment higher will the organizational performance and success. The study focuses on the practice and observance of the two central factors, empowerment and employee recognition for enhancing employee motivation which leads to organizational effectiveness. The organizations should design their rules, policies and organizational structures that give space to the employee to work well and appreciate them on their tasks fulfillment and achievements. This will surely lead to organizational growth. The aim of this study was to examine job satisfaction level of bank employees in Punjab Province. A structured questionnaire survey conducted. The required information was collected from 4 bank employees who were randomly selected from both public and private sectors bank. The result of study reveals that employees of private banks were more satisfied with pay, recognition, and working hours as compared to public sector bank employees. Whereas, the employees of public sector were satisfied with job security as compared to private sector bank employees. The current research study attempts to find the association among three important job related behavior of employees i.e. motivation, commitment and job involvement. Present study was conducted in banking sector of Pakistan. 400 banking personnel were randomly selected and responses were sought out from them by means of questionnaire. Out of total 400 distributed questionnaires, 305 were received back and 285 were considered as valid and then analyzed using SPSS 16. A significant but somewhat weak positive relationship of motivation, commitment and job involvement was found with each other. Some important implications for future research are also derived from the study.

Ambrose et al. (2005) conducted a qualitative study to investigate faculty satisfaction and retention. The study focused on the faculty of a private university over a period of 2 years. Findings suggested sources of satisfaction or dissatisfaction clustered into areas such as salaries, collegiality, mentoring, and the reappointment, promotion, and tenure process of departmental heads.
