a) Derive equation of propogation of electromagnetic waves in free space and hence find the solution for a forward moving plane wave. b) What is circular polarization of the wave? 8 1. 4

Answer any three questions. Two marks for neat and well-organized answers. a) Discuss about the differential form of relationship between electric potential and electric field intensity. Hence, establish the relationship between equipotential surface and electric flux lines. 4+4 b) The potential field in a medium having relative permittivity of 3.5 is given by = 4x3 y 5y3 z + 3xz3 volts. Find the electric field intensity and the electric flux density at the 2. point (1, 5, 2) m. 8 a) State and prove integral form of Gausss Law. 2+6 b) A circular disc of charge of radius 1 m having a uniform charge density s = +1nC/m2 lies in the z = 0 plane, with center at the origin. There is also a point charge of +3nC at the origin. Find the uniform charge density of a circular ring of charge of radius 2m lying in in the z = 0 plane, with center at the origin, which would produce the same electric field intensity at the point (0, 0, 5) m as that due to the combined effect of the disc and point charges. Medium is air. 8 [ Turn over

c) What is wave guide? Explain power flow through a single core cable which acts as a wave guide. 10. Write short notes on any four : a) Skin effect. b) Eddy current. c) Poynting Vector. d) Picture of Plane wave propogation. e) Propogation constant for a lossless medium. f) Skin depth in copper at 1 KHz. 4 44=16

[2] 3. a) For a single-core cable having one dielectric medium, find out the most optimum dimensions of the cable with the constraint that the outer diameter is kept fixed. Derive the formulae used. 4+4 b) An electric dipole is formed by a point charge of +1 C at (0, 0, 0.2) mm and another point charge of 1 C at (0, 0, 0.1) mm. Find the electric field intensity in vector form at the point (20, 0, 10) cm. The medium is air. 4+4 a) Derive an expression for the energy density of an electric field. 6 b) A single-core, lead sheathed cable has a conductor of 8 mm radius and two layers of different insulating materials, each 6 mm thick. The relative permittivities are 2.1 (inner dielectric) and 4 (outer dielectric). Calculate the potential gradient and charge on the conductor surface, when the potential difference between the conductor and lead sheath is 33 kV. Also calculate the capacitance of the cable. 4+4+2 a) For the two-dimensional system with equal nodal distances shown in Fig. 1, write the FDM equations for the unknown node potentials. Derive the formula used. 7.

[3] b) A long conductor of negligible radius is at a height 5 m from earth and parallel to it. If the electric field intensity at a point 3m exactly below the line is 850 V/m, then find the uniform charge density of the conductor. PART - II Answer any three questions. Two marks for neatness. All symbols have their usual significance. 6. a) Show that H = J . 6 8
