AllthedepartmentsoftheInstitutehavewellequippedresearchlaboratoriesandworkshopfacilities.Inaddition, thereareanumberofcentralfacilities,whichincludeComputerCentre,CentralLibrary,Workshop,Xeroxand Photography Sections. TheCentral Library hasa very large collection of books, back volumes of periodicals, standardspecificationsandotherliterature. TheLibrarynowhasmorethan3lakhsbooksandvolumesand subscribestoover1500currentjournalsinScience,Engineering,HumanitiesandSocialSciences. TheCentreforStudiesinResourcesEngineering(CSRE)establishedin1976bythethenMinistryofEducation andSocialWelfare,hasthefacilitiesandinfrastructureforresearchintheareaofNaturalResourcesexploration andmanagementusingmoderntoolsofRemoteSensingandGeographicInformationSystems. The Centre for Research in NanoTechnology & Science (CRNTS), is well equipped for pursuing research in nanotechnology.AlmostallsophisticatedtoolsrequiredforNanotechnologyresearcharehousedhere. TheCenterforEnvironmentalScienceandEngineering(CESE)fundedbytheDepartmentofEducation,Govt.of India,isconcernedwithairandwaterqualitymanagement,computeraddeddesignforwastewaterengineering systems,lowwastetechniques,etc. TheDepartmentofScienceandTechnology(DST),DefenseResearch&DevelopmentOrganization(DRDO)and Ministry ofHuman ResourcesDevelopment (MHRD) ofGovernment ofIndia, hassponsoredthe setting ofa NationalGeotechnicalCentrifugeFacility(NGCF)tofacilitateresearchinfrontierareas. TheCentreforTechnologyAlternativesforRuralAreas(CTARA)isconcernedwithdevelopment,transferand impactassessmentoftechnologyinthecontextofsocioeconomicdevelopmentofasmallregion.Tothisend,the centreofferscourses(coupledwithfieldwork)toimpartnecessaryperspectivesandquantitativeskills The Industrial Design Centre (IDC), established in 1969, has followed an integrated and interdisciplinary approachtowardsdesigneducation.TheCentreoverthepastyearshasexperimentedwithdifferentmethodsin designeducationtodevelopaflexiblestructuretosuittheneedsofstudents. Schools in Cryogenics, Lasers and Laser Systems, Offshore Engineering and Management have also been established.NewfacilitiesundertheThrustAreaProgrammesinthefieldslikeMicroelectronics,Microprocessor Applications,IntelligentSystems,Robotics,CAD/CAM,RemoteSensing,Telematics,etc.havebeencreated. CentreforAerospaceSystemsDesign&Engineering(CASDE)andCentreforFormalDesignandVerificationof Software(CFDVS)havebeenestablishedrecently.TheInstitutehasmanyresearchcollaborationswithleading universitiesinUSA,Europe,Japan,andotherEastcountries.Aspartofthesecollaborations,thepostgraduate studentsgetopportunitiestocarryoutjointresearchprojectswithfacultyandstudentsfromtheseuniversities. The Centre for Distance Engineering Education Programme (CDEEP) was started by the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT)Bombaywiththeexpressaimofprovidinghighqualitydistanceeducationinengineeringand sciencetoalargenumberofparticipantsthroughoutthecountryandabroad.CDEEPwouldliketosharethe expertiseofIITBombayfacultywithstudentsandworkingprofessionalseverywhere.Thecoursesofferedthrough distanceeducationaretheverysameonesthataretakenbyIITBombaystudents.Toreachasmanylearnersas possible,CDEEPisusingdifferentmediumsandvarioustechnologies. Approximately 7to 10M.Tech.projectswillbetakenupevery yearincollaboration withGerman Academic ExchangeService(DAAD)whereinstudentsworkontheirprojectsinreputedGermanUniversitieslikeAachen, Berlin,Darmstadt,Karlsruhe,StuttgartandDresden. ThelocationofIITBombayincloseproximitytoseveralleadingR&DCentersandmajorindustrialestablishments offersexcellentopportunitiestointeractwiththemandplansomeofresearchprogrammesincollaborationwith them.TheIndustrialResearchandConsultancyCentre(IRCC)coordinatescollaborativeprojectswithindustry andotherresearchorganizationssuchasBARC,TIFRandCSIR.TheInstituteisactivelycollaboratingwithseveral organizationsofothercountriesonabilateralbasis. TheComputerCentreofIITBombayprovideshighendcomputingfacilitiestotheInstitute.Ithasseveralhigh

performancecomputingmachines,whichincludea4CPUDigitalmachine,HPsKclassmachine,SGIOctaneand several SUN servers. Students are provided email access through a cluster of 10 J class HP computers. The Computer Centre is a level 3 Centre for the national computing facilities under the ICOSER project of the DepartmentofScienceandTechnologysTIFAC. TheentireacademicareaoftheInstituteaswellasitshostelsareconnectedtotheInstitutesbackbonebya10 MbpsopticalfiberlinkconnectedtoanATMswitchthroughseveralfastethernetswitches.TheInstitutebackbone islinkedtoa2MbpsInternetlinkthrougharadiomodem.Inaddition,therearetwolowercapacityInternet links,eachof64kbps.EachstudenthostelhasacomputerroomwithseveralPCs,whichcandirectlyaccessany serverintheInstitutethroughtheInternetlink.

3)STUDENTSAMENITIES
Instituteisfullyresidentialandhas14hostelsforstudents.Eachhostelisanindependententitywithitsown messfacilities,recreationareas,etc.Howeverstudentsmaybepermittedtohavetheirownarrangementsfor accommodationoutsidecampus. Extra curricular activities are provided by the Students Gymkhana. These activities include Sports, Cultural programmes and Social Service. Various clubs of the Gymkhana encourage individual talents of students in hobbiessuchaspainting,modeling,music,photography,aeromodellingandfabricationofelectronicdevices.A swimmingpoolisanadditionalfacility.AwellplannedStudentActivitiesCentre(SAC)isfunctioning.

4)M.TECH.PROGRAMME
The Institute offers a postgraduate Master of Technology programme in various disciplines. The aim of the programmeistotrainthestudentsinhighleveltheoreticalknowledgewhichenablesthemtotacklepractical complex problems of design and development in the industrial fields as well as pursue further academic achievementsthroughresearch.Enoughflexibilityisprovidedinthestructureoftheprogrammeinrespectof lecture courses, laboratory and project work to help the students to achieve the above mentioned aim. The departmentsareequippedwithsufficientfacilitiesforthispurpose.Thesalientfeaturesoftheprogrammeare givenbelow: i. TheInstituteoffersafulltimeprogrammeof2yearandaparttimeprogrammeof3yearduration. ii. The part time programme is available to sponsored and selffinance students. However, the working hoursfortheparttimeprogrammewillincludethenormalworkinghoursof8.30a.m.to5.00p.m.and alsoeveningslots.
