1. Explain how the moment distribution methods of analysis of gable frame is different
from that of portal frame.
2. a) State and prove Castiglianos theorems.
b) Explain how indeterminate structure is analyzed using strain energy method.
3. A simply supported overhanging beam ABC of span 18m with overhang BC=3m
is subjected to rolling loads 20kN, 100kN and 50kN at 2m spacing. Using
influence line diagrams, determine
a) Max. support reation
b) Max. shear force at 8m from support.
c) Max. bending moment at 8m from support.
d) Absolute bending moment.
4. Analyze the square truss structure shown in Fig. 1 using flexibility matrix
method and tabulate the member forces. Assume AE/L is constant throughout.

5. Define influence line diagram and develop influence line diagram for two hinged
parabolic arch for the following
a) Horizontal thrust
b) Bending moment at any section
c) Radial shear force at any section
6. Analyze the square truss structure shown in Fig. 2 using stiffness matrix method and
tabulate the member forces. Assume AE/L is constant throughout.
7. Analyze the portal frame shown in Fig. 3 using stiffness matrix method and draw bending
moment diagram. Assume AB=BC=4m, 60kN and 30kN loads are at centre of spans and
EI is constant.

1. a) Explain how distribution factors at joint in portal frame with inclined legs are
calculated.
b) Explain how portal frame with inclined legs is analyzed using moment distribution.
2. A fixed beam AB of span 8m is subjected to uniformly distributed load
10 kN/m throughout. Analyze the beam using strain energy method and sketch
bending moment diagram.
3. A truss structure of span 30m (10 m length of each panel) and height 5 m shown in Fig. 1
is subjected to 10m uniformly distributed moving load 4t/m. Determine the forces in
members BC, EF and BF using influence line diagrams.

2. A truss structure of span 30m (10 m length of each panel) and height 5 m shown in
Figure 1 is subjected to 10m uniformly distributed moving load 4t/m. Determine the
forces in members BC, EF and BF using influence line diagrams. [16]
3. A two hinged circular arch of span 24m and 3m rise is subjected to udl 20kN/m over half
the span from support and 50kN at crown. Analyze the arch using influence line diagram
and find [16]
a) Max. Horizontal thrust in the arch.
b) Max. bending moment in the arch
c) Max. Normal thrust in the arch.

1. Analyze the portal frame inclined leg AB at

60 with horizontal as shown in Fig.1 using
moment distribution method and sketch moment distribution method. The member BC is
subjected to uniformly distribute load 25kN/m throughout. Assume, vertical member
CD=3, BC=6m EI is constant. [16]
2. a) Derive expression for strain energy in a structural member due to [8+8]
i). bending moment and
ii). Axial force
iii). Twisting moment.
b) Find strain Energy stored in the structure as shown in Figure.
3. a) Define influence line diagram. Draw influence line diagram for reaction in a simply
supported beam.
b) A simply supported beam of the span 30m is subjected to a 15m uniformly distributed
rolling load 2t/m. At a section 10m from support, determine i) Max. bending moment
ii) Max. shear force. [16]

4. A three hinged parametric arch of span 20m and rise 3m is subjected to uniformly
distributed load 4t/m. The third hinge is located at its crown. Analyze the arch using
influence line diagram, at a section 8m from support, find
a) The bending moment
b) Axial thrust.
c) Radial shear force [16]
5. A two span continuous beam ABC is subjected to two point loads 5t and 10t at centre of
the spans AB and BC respectively. The spans AB and BC are 12m and 8m respectively.
The supports A and C are fixed and hinged respectively. Analyze the beam flexibility
matrix method and draw the bending moment diagram. [16]
6. Analyze the portal frame shown in Fig. 2 using stiffness matrix method and draw bending
moment diagram. Assume AB=BC=4m, 60kN load is at centre of span BC and EI is
constant. [16]
7. Analyze the portal frame shown in Fig. 3 using flexibility matrix method and draw
bending moment diagram. Assume AB=BC=CD=4m and EI is constant. [16]
