PCU: Basic software Windows NT 4.0

General
This section describes how to install or update additional software and back up data on PCUs on which the "Basic PCU Software with Windows NT 4.0" is preinstalled. "PCU" is the abbreviation for the PC (hardware) on which the HMI (Human Machine Interface) software (HMI SW 6.0 and later) is installed.

HW

SINUMERIK 840D/810D PCU 50: PENTIUM II 333MHz, with min. 64 MB D-RAM, 24VDC, without system software for Open Architecture (Windows NT 4.0 pre-installed) Order number: 6FC5210-0DF01-0AA0, available from 02.00 Note Instructions on how to replace the PCU or OP012 or OP015 can be found in: /BH/ Operator Components Manual.

1.1.2

Basic PCU software

The basic software installed on the PCU at the factory comprises the following SW components MS Windows NT 4.0, English version Internet Explorer 5.0, English version MS-DOS, SW 6.21 and later MPI driver, SW 5 and later Norton Ghost, SW 6 and later Norton Ghost Walker, SW 6 and later Note A guide to using the basic software can be found in file C:\Siemensd.rtf. File C:\BaseVers.txt lists the versions of the system components of the Service menu (and of Win NT) contained in the basic software.

Basic principle

The Service menu is implemented in DOS. The OEM customer starts the installation/updating of software via the Service menu. The process is completed by Win NT (after a reboot). Data are backed up (Backup/Restore) via the Service menu.

1.1.3

Hard disk partitioning

The hard disk is partitioned as required to install the HMI system software on the PCU under WinNT4.0. The partitioning is selected such that it divides the hard disk into 4 partitions (3 primary partitions and 1 extended partition) (hard disks smaller than 4.8 GB are not supported), DOS (Service menu) can be booted in addition to WinNT4.0 (HMI system software) (dual booting), the HMI system software (pre-installed on delivery or installed later as additional SW by the OEM customer) operates on one NTFS partition and the HMI system software, the WinNT system software and DOS with the Service menu all run on different partitions to ensure data integrity.

The following diagram shows how the partitions are utilized when the HMI system software is installed (the partition names are typed in italics).

Partition C contains DOS 6.2 with the tools and scripts which implement the Service menu (e.g. Ghost tools). Partition D is used to store Ghost images, i.e. of predefined images e.g. configured in delivery state) and of local backup images. The WinNT system software is stored on the adjacent partition so that it is readily transferable, e.g. as an update or for driver installation. Partition D also contains the installation directory into which software to be installed is first copied from a remote PG/PC before the actual installation operation is started. Partition E is reserved for the WinNT system software. Partition F is the application partition for the execution of applications such as the HMI system software (including data management and temporary data) and HMI-OEM applications, STEP7 or customer-specific applications (e.g. Protool). Note The size of the partitions shown in Fig. 8-1 depends on the size of the hard disk. The following free space is guaranteed: On partition D: 500 MB for storing local backup images. On partition F: 1 GB for copying applications (HMI-OEM applications, STEP7, customer applications, data e.g part programs...)

Boot Manager
When the PCU is running up, you can choose between the SINUMERK System and Service menu in the Boot Manager menu. SINUMERIK : SINUMERIK System Select this option to go to the start level of the HMI system software or (for servicing) to the desktop of Windows NT. [concealed menu item]: Service menu The Service menu in Windows NT is used to transfer software to be installed (where no network is available) and to back up data.

1.1.5

Installation
Windows NT 4.0 is pre-installed on the PCU. Windows NT 4.0 and the Service menu described below are the two main elements of the "Basic Software Windows NT 4.0" package: SINUMERIK Desktop (Windows NT): The Windows area is intended for servicing operations, i.e. it provides Windows functionality for start-up of the control system. In this area you can - install the HMI system software via a network, - install additional software (e.g. extra languages) and - edit INI files/HW configuration (e.g. install drivers). [concealed menu item]: Service menu (DOS) The menu options enable you to transfer installation software from an external source to D:\INSTALL. The software is actually installed by Windows NT when the PCU is next booted provided it contains an exe-file, e.g. "setup.exe". In this menu you can - transfer/expand the HMI system software, - backup/restore the data on the hard disk and - install the HMI system software via a network.

Caution: Please check that there is sufficient free memory space on partition D of the hard disk before installing new software.

Installation via a parallel link with a FAT16 file structure

Prerequisites for PG/PC Note The parallel interface is the only suitable link for installing the HMI software. The Intersvr/Interlink SW is not a WinNT application. Procedure 1. INTERSVR is used on the external PG/PC to transfer the software to the PCU. INTERSVR must be executed in DOS / Win3.11 / Win95 / Win98 if the PG/PC has a hard disk partition with a FAT16 file structure (not FAT32 !). Switch off the PCU Use the parallel transmission cable (PC-Link cable, LapLink cable) to connect parallel port LPT on the PG/PC to LPT on the PCU.
Transmission mode Parallel PC/PG LPT1 PCU LPT (25-pin)

2. 3.

4.

Copy directory HMI_Advanced from the CD to drive C:\ on the hard disk of your PG/PC and change the directory name to "MMC102". If you do not have enough free space on drive C:\ or the file structure on your PG/PC is not FAT16, then you can choose another local hard disk drive (e.g. D:\). You cannot install the software directly from the CD. You can start the installation of the HMI software by entering Intersvr C: (or the drive on which directory MMC102 is stored) in the Run screen of the Windows Start menu. IMPORTANT: If your PC/PG is in this state, the PCU MUST be switched off (if it is still switched on, switch it off now).

5.

6. 7. 8. 9.

SWITCH ON the PCU, select the "Service menu" in the Boot Manager. Press key 1 Install/Update SINUMERIK System and enter the password if requested (access level 1 or 2). Press key 2 Install via Serial/Parallel Line. Data transfer in progress. The system boots in Windows NT and the installation is started automatically.

10. Select language (in Win NT only). 11. Select technology: Milling or turning (in Win NT only). 12. The system lists all entries made (in Win NT only). 13. The PCU is rebooted again on completion of the installation. 14. Close PC/PG server mode by pressing Alt + F4.

Installation via a parallel link with a FAT32 file structure

Note The parallel interface is the only suitable link for installing the HMI software. The Interserve/Interlink SW is not a Win NT application. 1. You must use this method if your PC has only partitions with a FAT32 file structure. To install the package, you will need the supplied CD-ROM with the system SW. You will also need a full keyboard on your PC. Copy INTERLNK.EXE from the HMI directory on the CD to WINDOWS\COMMAND on the PC. Enter the following line in CONFIG.SYS: device=c:\windows\command\interlink.exe /AUTO Use the parallel transmission cable (PC-Link cable, LapLink cable) to connect parallel port LPT on the PC to LPT on the PCU. SWITCH ON the PCU, select the "Service" menu in the Boot Manager. Select key 8 Start PC Link and type in the password (access level 1 or 2) when the prompt appears. Now copy the entire contents of directory HMI_Advanced on the CD into directory D:\INSTALL on the PCU. When all the data have been transferred, exit INTERSVR on the PCU by pressing Alt + F4. The system then runs up in Windows NT. In Win NT: The SW is now automatically installed by the InstallShield application on the PCU. You can make inputs in the prompt boxes of InstallShield using the TAB and Cursor keys (TAB corresponds to the END key on the OP031). The system runs up after the PCU has rebooted.
