D., Counseling Psychology-Washington Adventist University, 1999 M.A., Counseling Psychology-Washington Adventist University, 1995 B.S., Counseling Psychology-Washington Adventist University, 1993 Licensed Professional Counselor, 1996, License # 5766 My Philosophy I utilize a client-centered approach that emphasizes on individuals ability to move in positive directions; meaning that the theory have a belief in the trustworthiness of individuals and in their innate ability to move forward toward self-actualization and health when proper conditions are in place. Tied to these beliefs is the confidence that individuals also have the inner resources to move themselves in such positive directions. Finally, the core concept in the theory is that individuals perceive the world as a unique phenomenological way so that they know to peoples perceptions of the world is the same. I see counseling as a vehicular process by which I am able to facilitate my clients in the process of exploration, clarification, and identifying triggers, focusing on needs and assisting in making positive modifications in behavioral lifestyles that will eventually result in the attainment and fulfillment of life satisfactory in acceptance and client satisfaction. Therapeutic Approach My approach is integrated in that I draw from Rogerian therapy, is client-centered, based on the belief that every individual brings a unique and formative, personal, family and cultural experience. I also utilize the core theory of client centered emphasizing on the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. I try to be empathetic and sensitive to the multicultural issues that may surface in counseling. Also my principles will be based on the trilogy of congruent Genuiness, unconditional positive regard, and empathy. These are the fundamental characteristics that will serve as the foundation on which the process of counseling or psychotherapy rests. Another aspect of the helping relationship centers on the core or basic conditions, when present enhance the effectiveness of the relationship. These cores or basic conditions include the tenets of empathetic

Running head: PROPOSAL understanding, respect and positive regard, genuiness, and congruence, as well as concreteness, warmth, immediacy, and cultural awareness. Building on these cores or basic conditions that need to be present for effective development of the helping relationship, strategies are presented and refer to skills define and direct what counselors/therapists/leaders do during the relationship to attain specific results and move the helping relationship rom problem identification to problem resolution. These strategies are divided into three categories, strategies that build rapport, and encourage client dialogue, strategies that aid in data gathering, ad strategies that add depth and enhance the relationship. In our sessions, we will focus on awareness of strengths versus weakness. We explore the stagnation, unresolved issues and unhealed emotional wounds and center on the healing process. We will evaluate family/cultural history influence related to your current values, beliefs, relationships, and behaviors. We will examine thoughts, feelings needs, and perspectives that influence positive choices and reactions to respond to the present. We will spotlight responsibilities for the initiation and the maintenance of modifying habits and pin point them in our counseling process. We will emphasize on learning particularly pertaining to learning in counseling relative to behavior modification and emotions and the need to develop full control over this form of functioning. Confidentiality

Our sessions are held in the strictest confidence; no information about you may be released without your written permission or by court order. You are also protected under the provisions of the Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This law insures the confidentiality of all electronic transmission of information about you;

Running head: PROPOSAL whenever I transmit information about you electronically (for example, sending bills or faxing information), it will be done with special safeguards to insure confidentiality. Under the provisions of the Health Care Information Act of 1992, I may legally speak to another healthcare provider about you, without prior consent. I meet regularly with a supervisor in order to gain a better understanding of how to work most effectively with my clients. In these consultations, your identity will be protected, as will unique identifying information. If you elect to communicate with me by email at some point in our work together, please be aware that email is not completely confidential, as the internet service providers system administrator(s) might, in theory, read these emails. If you and your partner decide to have some individual sessions as part of couples therapy, what you say in those individual sessions will be considered part of the couples therapy, and can and probably will be discussed in our joint sessions. I will remind you of this policy before beginning such individual sessions.
State law requires the following exceptions to confidentiality

If the counselor has good reason to believe that the client will harm another person; if the counselor has a reasonable suspicion that a person under the age of 18, or a dependent adult (Aged, or developmentally delayed) is or has been physically abused, sexually abused, or neglected; if the counselor has good reason to believe the client is in imminent danger of harming himself, s/he may legally break confidentiality and call the police or the county crisis team; If the client informs the counselor of another named health or mental health care provider who has either engaged in sexual contact with a client or is impaired from practice due to cognitive, emotional, behavioral, or health problems, the law requires the counselor to submit a report to the MD Department of Healths licensing board.
