2) Soon after midnight, the sound of gunfire echoed across the street. And all at once, the world stood still panic spread across the neighborhood like wildfire as people opened their doors or barred them from the inside. Nothing such as this had happened here for years. Not in a small town. Not in a quiet house in the middle of the suburbs. Somebody had to have called the police; I could see the red-and-blue flash piercing the air. And I could hear an ambulance, wailing toward its markBut the people, oh the people, ever so helpful and gawking just stared at what had happened. At the body of the dead man. At the pool of blood soaking into the cracks of the sidewalk, at the gun, at the murderer all pointing directly at me. Their mouths agape and eyes wide open. And I found it funny. So I laughed. I laughed until the police arrived and hauled me away, I laughed as I saw the crowd around the body, I laughed as I entered my cell and Im still laughing now. No resistance. No pain. No remorse.

A. Spoilage caused by microbes, insects and other pests have led to the search for newer, surer and safer
methods of food preservation. Preserving food by drying, fermenting, salting and smoking has been in practice for several centuries. Canning, refrigerating, freezing, controlled atmosphere storage and the use of chemical preservatives and pesticides are later inventions which have contributed to the increased food supply and food security in modem times. A recent entrant to the list of preservation technologies are food irradiation.

1.Protecting the environment

We are in trouble! Almost every day we seem to hear of yet another problem affecting the environment. We should be concerned about the state of the planet in terms of its energy supplies and changing climate. The clear message being broadcast by all responsible governments is that every person has a part to play in addressing these issues. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, you can protect the environment by: preventing pollution, recycling materials, looking after reserves of water and conserving energy. Every one of us, whatever age we are can do something to help slow down and reverse some of the damage. We cannot leave the problemsolving entirely to the experts we all have a responsibility for our environment. We must learn to live in a sustainable way i.e. learn to use our natural resources which include air, freshwater, forests, wildlife, farmland and seas without damaging them. As populations grow and lifestyles change, we must keep the world in a good condition so that future generations will have the same natural resources that we have.

3.The

most cherished childhood experience

Silent. Weak. Slow. Unfortunate. These were the words thrown at me by my teacher in preschool during my nursery years. She told my parents that I had no way of passing and getting into a good school and start attending kindergarten. I could even still vividly remember her short hair, round face, chinita eyes and hoarse voice, angrily looking and shouting at me. Indeed, I was a depressed and an illfated child, but through my parents love and support, they continued to encourage me to study harder and prove everyone wrong, that I was not to be stepped on; that I would do well in my studies. After taking nursery, I took the entrance exam in the school my parents wished me to attend, Uno High School. I believe that taking that test was so dreadful that I could not even remember what I was doing at that time. Fortunately, through the works of God, I was able to pass the exam. Although my mother was a little hesitant at first to let me study there because she was worried that I would not be able to survive the hardship in studying in that school, my father trusted me, one hundred and one percent, and thus, I entered the school with fear, yet with great determination. At that point in time, I had set my goal: crush the painful words of my teacher, and let everyone watch and learn. I had put my heart into it and decided to take the challenge. I studied to death, seriously answered the exercises, seatwork and homework, and slept late at night with my mother as my tutor, but I had no confidence in myself. Even with the motivation my parents have always given me, I never trusted myself, my strengths, and abilities. Great opportunities are often disguised as impossible circumstances in life. Moving forward to my kindergarten graduation day, my family attended the event to see my very first and

special two time walk on stage to receive my English and Chinese diplomas, which was truly a good achievement despite other peoples bad impression of me with my studies. Beyond my familys expectations and imagination, I did not only get up on stage twice, but for four times! One was to receive my English diploma, Chinese diploma, Most Responsible Student certificate and Best in Filipino award. Moreover, I was one of the top students in our batch. Astonishingly, I did not only break the curse my teacher chanted and give my parents pride, but I also gained so much selfconfidence and determination from that time to accomplish more and earn integrity with perseverance, discipline and gratitude. In the beginning, although a huge rock stumbled across my path, I was still able to withstand it and see the silver lining with my faith in God, parents guidance and hard work. Beyond doubt, this fairy tale story like, once upon a time happened an unfortunate event turned into a happily ever after ending, was not only a memorable, but also a very remarkable experience from my pigtail years with the achievements I have gathered and the lessons I have learned that I would always be glad to narrate to everyone, stand as an inspiration and motivation, and tell them that nothing is impossible. Just when you think you cant do it, do it!

4. How does a superstar morph into a superhero? What does it take to make the costliest film in the country? Shah Rukh Khan shows Filmfare his mojo power. Move over Superman

Every time you are in a film, the expectations sky rocket. Does that faze you? If you dont have expectations from an actor who has worked for 20 years, has money, fame, cars and a production house, who has earned so much respect and reputation; then who else would you have expectations from? My fans have put me up on this pedestal. Now I have to entertain them and make it all worth it. Ive the most beautiful life. Ive no worries about that. There were reports about you working in a film with Leonardo DiCaprio. True? Yes, I was approached. The film is called Extreme City produced by Martin Scorcese and written by Paul Schroeder. But its not happening at the moment. Im too busy with other movies this year. I want to spend time on one script at a time. What do you think of Bollywood actors going overseas? Is it a way to move forward? Why shouldnt we make films as good as Hollywood? We make more films than them. We cant control our looks, language, story but those are creative aspects. We can control technology, the way we shoot our films and the marketing. My biggest worry is that the Indian audience will stop seeing our films. They will be inclined toward Hollywood films. Why would they spend money on something that is sub standard? When our actors go to Hollywood and work, I feel they should work here and make Hollywood come to us. Warner Bros. has already come here. But instead of asking them for technology we ask them

for money. How much more money do we need? Those days are gone. Today we have money. Reliance has bought a majority stake in Dreamworks. Lets invest together. And ask them for the desired technology which will help us make great films. My colleagues tell me you have mellowed, become a more gentler and kinder person? See, its simple. I treat you with respect, you give me respect. When I react to certain stuff, my family and loved ones will say, dont react, dont respond. They feel bad. Sometimes I feel bad when I get into a war of words. I dont like to give off bad energy or bad vibes to people. I expect the same. Since Im more at peace with myself, I guess all this doesnt affect me much. But I have probably mellowed. Otherwise, Im from Delhi and I know how to set such people straight. Ive broken a lot of jaws. I can break some more. (Jokes) Now Ive decided to conduct press conferences like an auction. The press will ask all their questions together. Then I will decide which one to answer, which one to ignore and which one to call to the back of the room and set them straight. Ill ask them to bring their cameras with them. Im eloquent and decent about everything but when you cross the line, I can mess with you too. Your friends claim that youre detached. Im detached in a strange way. I live on a different plane. The way I see this world, emotions and relationships is different. I get in touch with the real world all thanks to my children. My son says when Im angry Im like a monster. He says some strange sound emerges from me which doesnt suit my build! He says I overdo it. Imagine a 13-yr-old saying that to me. Suhana says if I dont like someone I should go and say it. Gauri lets me be, she never told me anything but my kids are helping me to get in touch with the real world. Sometimes people tell me that my talks and philosophies bore and confuse them. Im getting old and its too late to change. There should be quirks in people. My quirk is I invite loneliness.

What next? I want to make a sequel to Ra.One. It would be G.One and would begin from Mohammed Ali Road. I ant people to look up at the sky and say, Woh dekho G.One jaa raha hain. In New York, people enjoyed the existence of Spiderman or Superman. In Gotham city people enjoyed the presence of Batman. When I go to New York, I still feel Spiderman will appear from nowhere. In India, we dont have superheroes. We should have many more superheroes. That would be fun. Listen, I live movies, I am movies. Forget owning a cricket team like the Kolkata Knight Riders or endorsing products or even dancing at weddings. Movies give me the ultimate high. Id rather do something right or wrong in the movie business. Nothing compares to that feeling.

6.The

Need for Family

All over the world, family is losing its importance for many reasons.
In some countries both fathers and mothers must be free to move from one town or factory to another in order to gain a long awaited promotion, or to be trained or retrained for the work one has chosen. This places great stress on families that must be constantly moving if they are to take advantage of every opportunity offered. When this happens, family ties are weakened, and individuals are encouraged to look out for themselves. The West Indian Family is still very important, as it performs functions that have long ceased to be performed elsewhere. It is known, for example, that Caribbean territories have not been able to provide enough institutions to cater to the very old - the grand mothers and grand fathers of the society. In doing this, the West Indian family has also made provision for the care of the infants, since it has been the duty of the grand mothers to look after the small children. In adddition to this, the family has absorbed the unemployment problem, by providing food and clothing for those who are not working, without insisting that they should get out and find a job. There are many problems faced by us in the West Indies today, but were it not for the presence of family life, many could not survive the pressures of living. We would therefore do well to support and encourage family life in our nation.
