3MT Information Graphics

Congratulations on your performance and representing your Faculty at the 2011 UNSW 3MT finals. You are invited to participate as a client for a coursework student project, which will be conducted and managed by Associate Professor Leong Chan, College of Fine Arts, Weeks 10-13, Semester 2, 2011. Leong teaches an online course, SDES4205 Information Design. This is an introduction to principles and theories in the visual communication of data, pictures and text. This semester the enrolments include undergraduate students from the disciplines of commerce, industrial chemistry, industrial design, landscape design, interior architecture, medicine, planning, science and taxation. As part of the project five 3MT finalists will be invited to act as a client for a team of four-five Information Design students. If you are interested in being a client for this group please send your expression of interest to Dr Shona Blair at the Graduate Research School (s.blair@unsw.edu.au) by the end of Monday 26 September. Five interested participants will be shortlisted to take part. What happens if I am selected? You will need to supply your 3MT presentation notes or transcript, as a Word file (and we will supply the design students with a copy of your 3MT PowerPoint slide) One Information Design student from the team working with your slide will be assigned to liaise with you. The correspondence will be for any clarification of your research topic and request for additional data or pictures, and will be conducted via email

What will I get out of the process? Over four weeks Leongs students will analyse your research topic and PowerPoint slide with the aim to redesign, develop and produce a new presentation slide for you In Week 14 (commencing 24 October) you and the other 3MT clients will be invited to view online, and provide feedback and comments on the outcomes from the five teams. Other guests invited to provide feedback include: Professor Laura Poole-Warren, Dr Shona Blair and others to be confirmed. A new 3MT presentation slide that will help you tell your story in an even better way in the future

Notes 1) The Information Design students will respect your confidentiality and the intellectual property of your research topic at all times; the virtual gallery of designs will only be available to visitors with password access. 2) The whole course is conducted online, therefore it does not matter if you are not based in Sydney for this project, and UNSW@ADFA candidates are encouraged to apply.
