It is impossible to understand the salvation of Israel without understanding the truth of the REMNANT.

Isaiah 1:9 Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

God in his mercy, and in fulfillment of his covenant promises to Abraham and david, did not allow Israel to perish, but saved a remnant. The SALVATION of the REMNANT occurred in the FIRST CENTURY.

Paul quotes this prophetic word from Isaiah: Romans 9:27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:

The remnant was according to the election of grace during THAT TIME: Romans 11:5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

The salvation of Israel was the salvation of the REMNANT.

Isaiah 37:32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.

Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

The REMNANT was the FIRST CENTURY JEWS who called upon the name of the LORD. The Jews who became believers during Pentecost were a part of this remnant. The remnant was saved before the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and the end of the Old Covenant age.

The salvation of Israel was the key to salvation going to the nations (Gentiles). Israel was a light to the nations. This light was the light of Jesus the Messiah. We are saved today because salvation came to Israel. The salvation of Israel is not FUTURE but PAST. This is FULFILLMENT. This is the blessing of FULFILLMENT.

Israel was waiting for salvation, and that salvation came through Jesus the Messiah.

Isaiah 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation. This salvation would come WORLD WITHOUT END (Unto the AGE OF THE AGES, the KINGDOM AGE, and the CHURCH AGE- Eph.3:21) Isaiah 45:17 But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end. ] This salvation was the restoration of Israel, and would result in salvation going to the ends of the earth. Isaiah 49:6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. This was the acceptable time that was present during Pauls ministry: Isaiah 49:8 Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages; 2 Corinthians 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

The day of salvation came. Many in Israel missed it, but the remnant did not. Thank God for his salvation.

William Bell states, In like manner, Paul said God at that time, had a remnant according to the election of grace. This means not everyone in Israel, as in the Old Covenant illustration, but a remnant was being saved by grace, not the works of the law.

For that reason, the nation had not obtained what it sought, but the elect (the remnant) obtained it and the rest of Israel were blinded, (Rom. 10:7) He then added prophecies from Deut. 29:3, 4; Isa. 29:10; Ps. 69:22,23, to speak of disobedient Israel. Their fall of the majority in the nation, brought salvation to the Gentiles, not so the blinded could fall, but to provoke them to jealously that they might claim their own God through Christ. Thus, Paul wanted to save some of those who were his brethren according to the flesh. Thus, Paul affirms their right to salvation as part of the remnant, if they did not continue in their unbelief. And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. (Rom. 11:23). Thus, the part of the nation which God cast away came about through their own unbelief, thus, they judged themselves unworthy of everlasting life, and cast themselves away in their rejection of Christ, (Acts 13:45, 46; Rom. 10:13). Hence, God created a new Israel through the gospel by transforming the nation into a spiritual one. Thus, the new nation of Israel, created through the new covenant with the house of Israel (through the call of the Gentiles) and Judah, (Heb. 8:612), is all Israel.

God did not cast away his people, but saved the remnant, in fulfillment of his promises to them.
