3.2.19 Constant support and variable support spring hangers shall be furnished with travel stops for field hydrostatic tests of the pipe system. a. Constant Support Hangers (1) Constant support hangers shall be used in the following systems where calculated movements would cause a variation in supporting effort greater than 8 percent between hot and cold positions, if variable spring hangers were to be used: Main Steam High Temperature Reheat Low Temperature Reheat Extraction Steam Lines above 343C (650F) Boiler Feed Water Lines adjacent to Pump and Economizer inlet

(2)

In all other piping systems constant support hangers shall be used where calculated movement would cause a variation in supporting effort greater than 20 percent between hot and cold positions, if variable spring hangers were to be used. Constant support hangers shall be used where it is necessary to avoid excessive transfer of loads to equipment. Constant support spring hangers shall be of a design which compensates for the normal variation in supporting force of helical coil springs. Each hanger shall be calibrated or adjusted to support the exact load specified, and these loads shall be permanently stamped on the assembly. Suitable provision shall be made for field adjustment of the supporting force through a range of plus or minus 10 percent of the specified load. Hangers shall have a travel range of at least 12.7-mm (1/2 in.) beyond the minimum and maximum settings representing the calculated thermal movement of the supported load. Each hanger shall be equipped with a travel scale and indicator to show the position of the supported load. Cold and hot settings shall be clearly stenciled at their proper location opposite the indicating pointer, by the letters "C" and "H," respectively. Means shall be provided for support of temporary overloads during erection.

b. Variable Spring Hangers (1) Variable spring hangers shall be used for piping which has vertical movement of not more than 12.7-mm (1/2 in.) and which is not governed by the requirements stated above. Variable spring hangers shall have a variation in supporting force of not more than 25% of the maximum force specified for total travel resulting from thermal movement. The helical coil springs

shall be so designed that the unit fiber stress does not exceed 5,300 kg/cm2 (75,000 psi) when the spring is compressed solid. A suitable travel scale and indicator shall be furnished on each hanger. Cold and hot settings shall be clearly stenciled at their proper location opposite the indicating pointer by the letters "C" and "H," respectively. c. Rigid Hangers (1) Rigid hangers shall be used where provision to allow vertical movement is not necessary or desirable. Means shall be provided to permit vertical adjustment of hangers after erection and to ensure locking of the hanger in final position. Wherever rigid hangers and supports are utilized, due regard shall be given to stresses in the piping system.

d. Special Requirements (1) If during operation of the systems, excessive vibration of piping is encountered, and, if the vibration is due to method of support, hangers shall be supplemented by Contractor with vibration control equipment of approved design. The vibration control equipment shall be so designed that a resisting force of sufficient magnitude is continually available to restrict vibration or pipe movement to acceptable values. Special emphasis shall be given to lines that are subject to sudden pulsations, such as boiler feed water pump recirculation, condensate pump recirculation, and similar systems. These lines shall be guided and dampened so that excessive movements will not occur when these sudden pulsations occur. Adequate provisions shall be made to allow for proper expansion movements so that the systems will not be overstressed during these conditions. All elements of supporting equipment and vibration control equipment shall be designed with a factor of safety of five. Stresses shall be modified as required by temperature conditions. Hangers shall be proportioned to minimize transmission of heat to the main structure of the plant. All lines which are acoustically isolated shall be provided with specially designed hangers. These special hangers shall acoustically isolate the piping system from the supporting steel or concrete. (4) Where the piping system is subject to shock loads or thrusts imposed by the actuation of safety valves, hanger design shall include provision of shock absorbing devices of approved design.
