Adapt Eating Distress Association April 2012

Annual General Meeting


On Monday 2nd April Adapt held its AGM for 2010 2011 to highlight the positive work and effort that has been ongoing during the year. Within this year Adapts work was focused on the Young Persons Project, funded by Comic Relief, in which we were actively out and about talking to and supporting young people across the Southern Health and Social Care Trust area.

59 workshops to 18 schools

1352 of students involved

During 2010 - 2011 Adapt had 9 volunteer giving over 1000 hours of their time to supporting people with eating disorders in their community

In December 2010 Adapt joined the social network by launching a new Facebook and Twitter page

Trained 51 youth officers and 20 social workers

Over 100 GPs, 100 dentists, 50 schools, 31 community groups and 5 colleges received information packs for working with EDs 20 support groups for sufferers and carers

Awareness raising during EDAW by lobbying and contacting all MLAs across the area

Adapt Eating Distress Association are pleased to announce that funding has been secure for 2012 2013 for staff to continue providing vital frontline support to individuals experiencing eating distress as well as their family, friends and carers. Such funding is vital in keeping our services running and allowing us to develop to meet the demands of the community. This is fantastic news that Adapt EDA has secured funding to keep services running in 2012! The charity provides a unique support services and is a trusted source of information for those coping with Eating Disorders in Northern Ireland. Well done to all the team!

Workshops
Adapt are now taking bookings for 2012 2013 for workshops. These workshops are freely available across the Southern Health and Social Care Trust area to address a number of areas highlighted by young people, students, professionals and carers.

Whats an Eating Disorder? Secondary school program to address the topic of eating distress: what is an eating disorder, signs & symptoms, causes and how to help a friend. This program also covers self-esteem topics including air-brushing & photoshopping and media trickery. Suitable for 12 +

Eating Distress An extensive look at eating distress & eating disorders, the health implications and causes. This workshop is designed for students wanting an in depth look at eating disorders, i.e. health and social care, counselling, etc. Suitable for 16+

Body Image & Self-Esteem Focus on self-esteem and body image issues that may lead to an eating disorder. This program focuses on issues realted to bullying, air-brushing/photoshop, etc. that impact on body image and self-esteem. Suitable for 12+
*This program is best with small groups of less than 15 people

Working with Eating Disorders Training for professionals wanting more information about eating disorders, causes, signs & symptoms and how to help someone with disordered eating. Designed for those working young people and individuals at high risk of eating distress. Suitable for professionals

Volunteer News
Adapt is a voluntary organisation that can continue providing support within the community thanks to our hard working volunteers. Over the last year weve had new volunteers join our team and seen others off to start university or new work, with each person leaving a lasting imprint on Adapt and the work carried out.

With over 1000 hours a year taken on by our volunteers and countless more at home thinking up new and innovate ideas for fundraising we want to say a big thanks to all those involve; past and present.

SHSCT Specialist Eating Disorders Services Specialist eating disorder services are available in each trust area. In the Southern Health and Social Care were Adapt operate there is Adult mental Health services (AMHS) and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Within both of these services a specialist eating disorder services operates, providing the patient with specialist care. To access these services it is important that people who require the service make an initial appointment with their GP who will make the referral to this specialist service. It is extremely important that you share all information about your condition with your GP explaining all effects and subsequent behaviors/feelings etc you are experiencing so they have a clear understanding of your situation and can ascertain appropriate services.
