Introducing: the worlds first social network, exclusively for women.

Billed as a marriage between Sex and the City and Facebook, Luluvise is a female only social network that lets women rate their former conquests in order of attractiveness and sexual prowess. Launched by 30 year old technology entrepreneur, Alexandra Chong, the site is powered through your Facebook profile, with a series of strict backend rules to help ensure its no men allowed mission statement is upheld. Women want a more intimate place for their conversations, says Chong on her latest venture, Facebook is really public now, and whilst we all accept that, its nice to get a sense of privacy online. Whilst it does have other features such as photo messaging and polls between groups of BFFs (thats best friends forever), it is undoubtedly the chance to rate your ex-lovers that has encouraged users from over 160 countries across the globe to plunge into the Luluvise world. Whilst this is a feature that most of us are no doubt intrigued by (no matter how much we protest otherwise), here at Stylebyte we cant help but feel slightly uneasy about the whole thing.Yes, in theory it sounds fantastic to have an online arena reserved just for us women, but surely there are some things that just dont require the use of technology. After all, what are after-works drinks for if it isnt moaning about relationships of times gone by? Whats more, if this website becomes a runaway commercial success, (although so far Chong has been tactically cagey about the exact number of users), then a male counterpart is sure to follow. And no good can come of that. Ever. l

ONLY GIRLS ALLOWED

With Apples new iPad, comes the hotly discussed 3G vs 4G debate. Is it really fair that us British buyers are paying out for a 4G capable device that isnt supported by any UK network?
As an umbrella term for the next generation of mobile networks, 4G provides users with download speeds of up to 100Mbps ten times faster than your average 3G, making it possible to download movies and music at near to lightening speed. Thought of by many as 3G on steroids, 4G is based on the very same LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology, and so at first glance it may seem rather strange as to why us Brits are being barred from this Rolls Royce of mobile download speeds. But you see, every country uses a different bandwidth of GSM, and whilst most of Europe uses the same radio frequency band system, the US, where 4G was pioneered, does not. Although there are plans to roll out this frequency across the majority of Europe, it is highly unlikely that the new iPad will be compatible. But dont despair and write off the iPad just yet. Although we are unable to access the highly sought after 4G networks, the geniuses at Apple have ensured that their latest tablet can still support speeds of up to 42Mbps which is faster than what constitutes 4G in some areas anyway so were not missing out on too much. Just because we cant access the latest 4G network, it doesnt mean that our experience of the iPad is compromised, so dont hesitate and get yourself down to the Apple store pronto. l

3G VS. 4G: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Q:SHOULD NETWORK pROVIDERS DO

mORE TO KEEp THEIR CONTRACT CUSTOmERS HAppY?

Y:

Danni, 27, from Surrey says, I think network providers should do a lot more, starting with false advertising. I took out a contract with unlimited texts and data, but the first month I got a bill 15 over the agreed price. When I complained I was told there was a fair usage policy that caps the data at 1gb, its in the small print, but who ever reads that? Im now on pay as you go.

N:

Natalie, 32, from London says, Network providers rely on extra costs to keep the deals the company has. If it werent for all the hidden extras everybody would pay more than they currently are for a basic contract. If you read through the contract, the terms and conditions and the extras you can add, you shouldnt have a problem.

mAKE WHO FAmOUS?

Tuesday 6th March 2012 The KONY 2012 campaign had been live for just over 36 hours before the topic was trending worldwide on Twitter, trumping Apple and their iPad 3 announcement. After 30 minutes its clear to see why so many people have been affected and moved by this sequence, the whole story being centered around one boy, Jacob, and how he narrowly escaped from Kony. Throughout the day, comments such as STOP KONY and KONY 2012 pop up on various popular YouTube channels, whilst the sharing buttons for Facebook and Twitter have been clicked and pressed over a million times. Thursday 8th March 2012 It goes without saying that where theres smoke, theres fire. The organisation behind the video, Invisible Children, has come under Twitter fire; with users claiming that the campaign is nothing but a money making scam and that it simplifies a much bigger issue. While the latter is true, Invisible Children backed themselves up, claiming that in order to bring the message to a wider audience, they would need to simplify the story. Tuesday 13th March 2012 In the past week, over 20,000 Kony related videos have been uploaded to YouTube. While some are positive, others are not in favour of the Invisible Children campaign. A vlogger from Uganda hits out in her video that Russell has only scratched the surface when it comes to the millions of people who are affected by LRA armies. Another video by an outraged Ugandan says that the KONY 2012 video makes Africans sound both hopeless and useless when it comes to conflict. Whilst the backlash may have begun, more influential celebrities have jumped on the sharing bandwagon. Justin Bieber, P Diddy and the first lady of chat shows, Oprah, have all helped promote the clip, making it the most-shared worldwide video.

A classic case of good vs. evil gone awry, follow the story that has gotten social networks all flustered. Reported by Nicola Shepherd.
On Monday 5th March 2012, Jason Russell, an American filmmaker released a YouTube video titled KONY 2012 with a clear message; make it viral. Now over 86,922,760 people worldwide have viewed the 30-minute sequence, which has quickly become the fastest spreading viral video and the most successful online campaign ever. The video was made live on behalf of the Invisible Children, a group of activists who have devoted the past 10 years on getting Joseph Kony caught and punished for his actions. Joseph Kony has been building his Lords Resistance Army (widely known as an LRA army) by abducting children, giving the boys a gun and forcing the girls into sex slavery, for 26 years. While the video was originally uploaded with good intentions, counter arguments have been made, the campaign has been slammed and Russell has even been arrested for indecent exposure. Wednesday 7th March 2012 Russells plan is starting to work, not only has the video gone viral, influential celebrities with a flock of followers are backing the trend. With the help of Rihanna and Kourtney Kardashian, among others, sharing the video on their Twitter feeds (to a combined total of 20,847,295 followers) the 30-minute campaign reaches its peak viewing of 31 million in one day. In just a single day, the video has exceeded initial expectations of 500,000 views, which was the overall aim for 2012.

Saturday 10th March 2012 At the Women in the World summit, one of the highest profile humanitarian campaigners, Angelina Jolie praised the Invisible Children campaign in a Red Carpet interview. I dont think I know anyone who doesnt hate Joseph Kony He is an extraordinarily horrible human being, whos time has come and it is lovely to see young people raising awareness.

Wednesday 14th March 2012 The backlash for the KONY 2012 campaign continues, this time as part of a comedy sketch for Channel 4s satirical news programme 10 Oclock Live. While the campaign is mentioned, it is filmmaker Russell who comes under fire. Charlie Brooker, co-presenter of the show called Jason a clean cut Abercrombie and Fitch version of Jesus Christ. It seems that the campaign is becoming less important, in favour for poking fun at the creator behind the clip. Jasons name is now just as known as Joseph Konys but no one could prepare for what would happen next

Saturday 17th March 2012 Reports just in state that Russell has been arrested after a public breakdown which lead to him cursing, shouting and even masturbating in public giving Invisible Children some more controversy to deal with. Russells wife Danica blames his current mental state to the personal criticism received for the viral clip. His breakdown comes just four days before the KONY 2012 campaign will transfer from online to the real world with the Cover the Night events taking place all over the world. With Russell now behind bars for the foreseeable future, the Ugandan Prime Minister adopts the same tactics, by speaking out in a, slightly shorter, YouTube video about the Kony situation. The Kony 2012 campaign fails to make one crucial point clear. Joseph Kony is not in Uganda, says Mr. Mbabazi The Ugandan government are on Konys trail, we did not need a slick video on YouTube to take notice. The campaign seems to be continually spiraling downhill and without the backing or blessing of the Ugandan Prime Minister, will the campaign loose backing from the general public?

Monday 19th March 2012 Russell was released from the San Diego psychiatric ward that he was detained in on Saturday. While all of this has been going on, the hype surrounding the Cover the Night events has quickly died down.

Tuesday 20th March 2012 Things have become uncomfortably quiet on the social networking sites. Today should be a time to celebrate the success of the ongoing campaign with the Cover the Night events taking place all over the world. Instead, you can just about hear a pin drop. There have been no updates from Invisible Children about the worldwide events, but it soon becomes apparent that no city anywhere in the world will be covered tonight. And so the silence begins

Thursday 5th April 2012 One month since the original video was posted with the message, make it viral, a lot has happened and the campaign became muted. After two weeks of silence, Invisible Children are back with a new message. The world responded and made Kony famous. Lets turn that awareness into action and take it above and beyond. This message came in the form of a second video, KONY 2012: Part II Beyond Famous. Only a few seconds into the video it becomes immediately obvious that Russell is missing from the video, as Ben Keesy, CEO of Invisible Children, steps up to narrate. While there were few mentions of Russell in the video, there was no specific acknowledgement as to why he wasnt a big part of the video, like he was one month ago. Not only this, but there is no mention of why Cover the Night has been moved one month later and why it couldnt go ahead as planned in March. The reason though, may be obvious. The new video brings viewers around 360 degrees and reminds us what is important capturing Joseph Kony. It also reminds those watching of Jacob, and how he only just escaped Konys clutches. Cover the Night will now take place on Friday 20th April 2012, turning the digital revolution into something more tangible.

Practically unbreakable, the AMOLED screen featured brand new graphene technology made out of sheets of carbon atoms that allows for phone to be literally rolled up in order to fit in your pocket, or be wrapped around your wrist.

When I first saw the words KONY 2012 appear on my Twitter feed, I naively thought someone had simply misspelled Sony. Thirty minutes later I was completely moved and compelled by what I had just seen. Im still astonished to this day at the power of social networking and what it can achieve if you have the right force behind it. Without social media sites like Twitter, Facebook or YouTube, Jessie J, Justin Bieber, even Rebecca Black wouldnt be as known or heard as they are today. Invisible Children applied the same theory to their film KONY 2012. Unfortunately, the campaign took a turn for the worse and because of that, the real story was blurred. While the clip got its point across, there are times when I wondered just what it was about. Theres a heavy focus on Jason Russell, as well as his son and at times, a heavy focus on production, rather than the message. You dont need fancy artwork and photography to get a message across, nor do you need background music. If your message is worth sharing, it will be in the words.

l THE NATIONS GRAN l A pINK FUTURE? l GIRL GAmERS l TECHNO WOmEN l

Our Diamond Queen is putting our Grannies to shame with her on the pulse nature to the tech generation, explains Nicola Shepherd.

AT ONE WITH TECHNOLOGY

When people speak of Elizabeth II, they wouldnt necessarily bring up technology in the conversation. Little do they know that the Queen has revolutionised the Monarchy, changing the way they live out their day to day lives through mediums that have become second nature to those who live in the 21st century. In her 60-year reign she has broken the boundaries between radio and television, becoming the first monarch in history to broadcast both her Coronation and Christmas speech in the 1950s, all without appearing phased. No monarch was ever crowned more fully in the presence of the people, says Royal Journalist, Andrew Marr. As well as this, the Queen pioneered the reality TV genre, which is such a phenomenon to this day, by agreeing to let cameras follow her and the family around for 75 days. While she has always taken to the latest technology innovations, the Queen has also embraced the Facebook generation with open arms, gaining a tremendous online presence. The 21st century has seen a vast majority of us jumping on the social network bandwagon and HRH is no exception. On the 5th October 2007, The Royal Channel was set up on YouTube, one of the first videos being the Queens first Christmas speech. The channel was a natural progression, bringing the monarchy onto a completely different platform. Shes lead the way and long may that continue, says Prince William. The Royal Channel is now used to

broadcast important events and appearances, most recently the Diamond Jubilee tour. Two years later, the nations Grandmother took to the micro blogging site Twitter to inform the Great British public and beyond, just what is going on with the Royals. Where theres an international icon or celebrity, there are also the fakes the people who pretend to be someone else for attention. Her Royal Highness is no stranger to the 140-character site, although her twitter doppelganger is far popular, with almost 320,000 more followers. While you might find Phillip Schofield tweeting about nuclear strawberries (true story), you can always count on our Queen to declare gin oclock. Since then, HRH has popped up on other social networking sites, more recently Flickr and top dog of the online world, Facebook. The monarchy appear knowledgeable of their fan base, choosing Facebook as their latest port of call thanks to William and Kate, the Royals have a far younger community of followers. The Queen has always been inescapable, with the media following her every move but now with the Facebook generation, shes become even harder to avoid. She is the most remorselessly represented figure to have ever lived in human history says historian David Cannadine. Its time to embrace the nations Grandmother, just as she has technology, with open arms. l

Robots are the new face of our future...yet no-one mentioned they would be taking our jobs, writesGrace Gerrard-Pickering.
Society has forever been fascinated with the notion of helpful, diligent robots assisting mankind in our day to day lives. At present, the IEEE reports that there are 8.6 million active robots in the world and the advancing technology in the world of cybernetics is ever- changing. Only recently have robots started to achieve the kind of sophistication and ubiquity that computings pioneers originally envisioned. With this major leap in the advancement of kinetically-able robots who have their own fully-functioning limbs and digits and the progression of patenting human-appearances, androids have evolved design-wise to become more like our species. The female species, that is. Yes, this wave of cyborg technology is all based on womens traditional jobs. Nurses, teachers, care-givers, cooks and factory workers are all careers that scientists and engineers are currently targeting as suitable roles for a new generation of robots. Robots are now becoming designed to replace some of the most important professions within our society. No longer are they merely the toys for geeks or created for mindless game-shows like BBCs Robot Wars. As society is also evolving into a more technology-crazed environment (where having the latest iPad immediately makes you part of the social elite), we ourselves are closer to embracing the reality of robots fully roaming free within our lives. The International Federation of Robotics predicts for 2012 alone, the sales of robots will increase by 20%. The question is with the latest cybernetic creations being made known through the press and becoming released into through human trials, are we slowly becoming too obsessed with creating technology to do important jobs for us? Could you imagine a robot teaching your 4-year old child or assisting intensive care nurses in hospitals? Well, they already are. Asia, one of the most prominent continents to embrace android technology, was the first of many countries across the globe to first integrate robotics within everyday life. The Korean Institute of Science and Technology was the first organisation to create and distribute robots into mainstream Korea. The R-Learning teaching assistant robots were the first robo-teachers of their kind to be installed in infant and primary schools across Southern Korea. They are fully equipped to teach children the national curriculum and act as authority figures within the classroom (even giving parents the opportunity to converse with the robot about their childs learning development). The aim for the robot was to eliminate any staff shortages within schools and to also implement a more cost-effective substitute for a real teacher. Trials have already taken place and many schools have already adopted The R-Learning droids into classrooms but so far the reaction has been mixed. Many have complained that the robot cannot always understand everything a child asks them and that they cannot discipline children who misbehave in class, yet the Southern Korean government have already announced to release 500,000 more and expand into high school education. Across the pond in China, many private conglomerates such as Foxconn (Asias biggest iPhone manufacturing company) have already set plans in place to replace one million assembly-line workers with factory droids over the next three years. Officials from Foxconn have claimed the move is to protect human workers after a recent spate of high numbers of depression, yet many of the workers are women who depend on their income to support their families. The seed of doubt has already been planted as to whether these techno-obsessed countries will become too reliant on use of machinery to do the important tasks in daily life. It seems it is not only Asia who have begun to start to adopt this trend. In North America, Medial Telepresence Nurses have been trialling in intensive care units and specialist wards in American hospitals. These robots are able to communicate to doctors and nurses through live video link and update doctors on the medical statuses of patients in wards. In Boston, Telepresence Nurses have also been sent home with children who need care at home to keep hospital staff informed of any health changes. As ICU nurses are deemed to be costly, the Telepresence robots would in theory save on money of hiring round-the-clock specialist nurses but the message does not bode well for female nurses with the threat of a robot taking over more jobs. New Zealand is also trialling Healthbot robots: designed through a collaboration of engineers in Japan, Australia and New Zealand in a study organised by the University of Auckland. Fifty Healthbot robots (consisting of Friend, Guide, Paro, iRobiQ and Cafero robots) have already been dispatched to a large scale retirement village in Selwyn Village, Auckland to assist doctors and provide medical care for 100 residents. The robots monitor vital signs of the elderly, can dispense medication and even assist in carrying residents out of bed: even offering entertainment by telling jokes and playing music. The robots stay with residents for up to six-week periods before they are swapped with a different breed of humanoid robot. Dr Liz Broadbent, a Senior Lecturer in Psychological Medicine at Auckland University, says these robots offer many potential benefits, but there are challenges to their acceptance in everyday life. Robots can provide an interesting option and also be an aid to communication and health monitoring. We have found that pre-existing ideas and attitudes towards robots influence how people respond. Another key factor is how human-like the robots look and sound. These findings have helped us improve the design of the robots for specific tasks and highlighted the need to address negative preconceptions. Even in the UK, we are producing robots which could rival those of Japan and Korea - some of the worlds market leaders in cybernetics. One of the most substantial advances in the android market has been the invention of KASPAR (Kinesics And Synchronisation in Personal Assistant Robots) the autism friendly robot. Lead by Dr. Ben Robins and the University of Hertfordshire, this child-size cyborg interacts and teaches fundamental social skills to autistic children. He smiles, he blinks and he talks like any ordinary human, but acts as an important tool to help those with autism understand and register different emotions. Trying to achieve successful human-robot interaction is a challenge within itself. Many find the experience of communicating with a robot hard to grasp: the mono-toned staccato voice of a robot and typically slow speech flow hinder conversations, whilst robots who can comprehend dialogue (such as KASPAR) often have trouble understanding humans who talk at a faster pace or who have regional accents. One particular trial that raised important questions about humans and robot care is the case of BANDIT. The robot designed by the University of Southern California, is a humanoid who interacts with sufferers of dementia and plays musical memory games to stimulate cognitive skills and improve short-term attention spans. BANDIT was trialled in November 2011 in an elderly care home in California where one particular female patient bonded with BANDIT the most. The elderly patient played with Bandit twice a week over a period of about eight months and each session lasted about an hour. The trial was deemed a success as patients began to show improved cognitive skills and BANDIT was sent back to the lab to collate results. As for the female patient, she became distressed as BANDIT was no longer part of her routine and retreated into a depressive state. Professor Adrianna Tapus, who specialises in Human-Robot interaction noted of the case: She was depressed. The robot had shown nice, encouraging behaviour towards her. One of the most unpredictable part of human-robot relations is what happens when the machine dies or goes away. What do we do next? This wave of new robotics may be of welcome news to some, but to women this is yet another setback for female employment. To an employer, a robot would be an ideal candidate for a job no complaints, no sick days, no wagedisputes and more cost-effective. A robot would not need costly maternity leave or flexible hours to care for children. By replacing key female care roles with robots, it further alienates women from the workplace. Official 2012 Home Office Statistics reported that 1.12 million of the 2.67 million were unemployed women the highest figure in 25 years. It seems equality is no longer a battle against men in the fight for employment. We cannot deny that robots do not have a place in our future if anything, it should be seen as a positive leap forward in the advance of robotics that they can be of great help towards our society. No robot existing at present has the emotional capacity or concern of that of a human: the key divide between man and machine and what makes us truly special. Robots should not replace the essence of humanity, but rather contribute to facilitating our way of life. From this new robotic technology gracing the world today, it doesnt take a massive leap of faith to imagine the full potential that robots can fulfil. A robot will only be as good as the programmer puts in and it will only take a matter of years before someone has the genius to create robots have sufficient artificial intelligence to start making their own choices and thinking for themselves. Quite a scary thought to imagine, but what must be taken from looking at todays robots is the fact that they are being produced to assist humans in some of the most helpful ways (through medical to teaching professions etc.) In terms of whether this is a lazy approach to shift some of our responsibilities onto robots is up to personal opinion. The cause for alarm is the eagerness for employers to be keen to replace both female and male workers with cybernetics. However, at this point in time, the fembot robots are not quite capable of living up to the imagined fantasy of machines taking over the world, popularised in films such as 2005s I, Robot.Yet, it is only a matter of time before we soon find robots replacing more jobs within our society l

According to a Stylebyte survey, only 12% of women would list pink as their favourite colour. So why does the technology industry insist on marketing to women using such a patronising, pink approach? Asks Nicola Coe.
Be it baby, powder or retina-burning fuscia, it would seem that the technology industry has embarked on a frivolous love affair with all things pink. Or, more accurately, it would seem that they think todays woman has. Walk into just about any electronics store and you will be greeted with the sight of row upon row of the most girlish of gadgets: neon pink headphones, diamant encrusted laptop sleeves and smartphones lacquered with a rich magenta hue that would make your average two year old girl blush with excitement. Not only do these gadgets share a colour palette, but they also share a common goal. To entice the most elusive of technology consumers women. Thought of as an industry polarised by gender, an innately male field full of toys, by boys for boys, today the technology world is faced with the fact that women now control 85% of all household spending. With four out of every ten gadgets bought in the UK being bought by women, theres little wonder companies have recognised their undeniable buying power, and started to design products specifically with the fairer sex in mind. The first quarter of this year alone saw numerous releases. There was the Samsung Pink Galaxy Note in a searing shade of raspberry, a new line of Dell Inspiron netbooks with a sugary sweet pink coating, and the HTC Bliss phone that comes complete with a magenta cover, diamant key chain and built in calorie counter. However, all of these new releases just leave you with one burning question. Why are they all pink? We might be raised to believe in the mantra, blue for the boys and pink for the girls, but it hasnt always been this way. Prior to the 1920s, blue was the colour that little girls were dressed in, because of its pretty and dainty appearance; whilst pink (thought of as the stronger of the two) was deemed more suitable for boys. Although what prompted the switch to our current gender colour preferences isnt fully documented, it had been made by the Second World War, which saw blue used for the uniforms of the British troops. If our ideas regarding colour associations are so susceptible to social change, then how can technology companies think it is sufficient to just slap a coat of pink on their products in the hope of attracting new female customers? With only 1 % of women saying they feel technology products have been successfully designed with them in mind, and the inability to effectively target the female market losing the industry about 0.6 billion in products sales per year in the UK alone, why do companies keep on using this stereotypical pink approach, particularly when it has failed on so many occasions? The Samsung Diva S7070 phone, launched in 2010, was encumbered with numerous clichs and a diamond shaped menu button that saw it rated at just 1.5 out of 5 by top tech reviewers Pocket Lint. And let us not forget, (although they would probably like to), the disastrous Della by Dell website launched for women in 2009, that saw technology dumbed down to Stepford Wife tips on cooking and getting in touch with your feelings. Dell neednt have bothered with the latter. Women had no problem expressing their distaste for the site, and it was promptly removed soon after launch. Whilst that website might be just a distant memory, the condescending way that many technology companies approach selling to women isnt. However, there are now efforts being made in order to induce change within the male dominated industry. A former marketing director at world renowned advertising agency Saatchi and Saatchi, Belinda Parmar left her well paid job in order to found Lady Geek, a unique consultancy brand that aims to help end technology firms pink it and shrink it approach to selling to women. It was actually the experience of going to buy a TV with my husband that initially prompted me to found Lady Geek, says Parmar. It was dreadful. The assistant spoke directly to my husband and ignored me completely. I had money to spend but felt patronised, alienated and confused. Having earnt her the title of one Computer Weeklys top female entrepreneurs, Lady Geek liaises with many leading brands, such as Nokia and Ubisoft, in order to give them advice on how to target the lucrative female market. When it comes to women its all about reassurance. In fact 80% of women are looking for reassurance that they have bought the right products as opposed to just 12% of men. But at the same time, there is no need to dumb down all aspects of technology; women are just as capable of

THE FUTURE'S BRIGHT, BUT DOES IT HAVE TO BE pINK?

understanding tech jargon as men. Parmar states before adding, most importantly, educated, professional women tend to not get excited by lower spec, stereotypical pink products. Women just arent interested in having diamant encrusted mobile phones. Whilst there is much to suggest that this pink approach is not appreciated by the current female generation, it begs the question as to whether this is a new phenomena, spurred on by womens increasing prevalence in the professional environment? The scientific theory surrounding this subject would lead us to believe that women have an innate predisposition to be drawn to all things soft, pink and fluffy. Professor Melissa Hines, director of Gender Behavioural Psychology at Cambridge University, says, womens increased estrogen levels have been shown to increase their preference for warmer colours and softer shapes, meaning that by providing a plethora of curved, pink gadgets, technology companies are simply tapping into a womans genetically predetermined desires. However a Stylebyte survey of over 100 women showed that only 12% would say pink is their favourite colour, whilst an overwhelming 83% said they were fed up of the patronising way in which women are predominantly marketed to with the colour pink. Founded in 2008 by sisters Abi and Emma Moore, Pinkstinks is a London-based campaigning agency that targets the medias use of heavily prescribed female stereotypes. Spearheading the change away from the ubiquitous use of pink to target women, the Moore sisters believe the incessant use of feminine typecasts is damaging to women. Walk into any toy store and theres just line after line of pink, says Emma, but boys dont get the same treatment.

#professional women hate

sterotypical pink products.

Yes blue is the colour that today people instantly associate with males, but they arent targeted with it in the same way that girls are with pink. And this is true, walk into any technology store and there is no specific section filled with tonal blue gadgets, just waiting to entice men. Such a glut of pink products is really damaging to women, continues Emma, how are they supposed to believe they can be equal to men and work within notoriously masculine industries, such as technology, if the people who already work there dont think they are capable of using the same products. Although it would be just as wrong to condemn all women that own a gadget in a delightful shade of pink, as it is for the technology companies to assume this is all women could possibly look for, there are so many alternatives on the market, that whilst not aimed specifically at women, look far sleeker and are far more efficient. Theres the latest incarnation of Apples iPad, which is 4G enabled and has a better screen resolution than most HD TVs, and Nokia have released their Lumia 800 phone, which at just 11.5mm thick comes in a whole array of colours and with a 1.2GHZ processor to boot. And for the 12% of women who do just love all things pink, at least ensure that the rosey android hybrid you long for is 4G enabled with a razor sharp 8MPG camera. There really is no excuse for putting the colour of the case before the products capabilities. Never forget, the future of the technology world is bright, but it doesnt have to be pink; it could just as easily be orange. l

Welcome to the new generation of the modern woman who knows that COD isnt just a type of fish, writes Grace Gerrard-Pickering.
When you utter the words gamer to a stranger, the image of a dark basement den full of sweaty, pre-pubescent teenage boys furiously clacking buttons on Xbox controllers springs to mind. Now picture a professional, single working girl spending her free time in the same virtual reality. Doesnt quite fit the stereotype, no? The notion of girl gamers is no big news. The Entertainment Software Association reported in 2011 alone, 46% of all gamers were women playing on average 7.5 hours a week and that 37% of women buy and play more video games than boys aged 17 years old. However, it seems that 2012 is the year that the female generation are coming out of the gamer closet and flying the flag for women to admit their love for all things pixelated. Even the glamarous likes of Mila Kunis has confessed her WoW addiction (thats World of Warcraft for those in the know) and pop strumpet Katy Perry has just launched her own expansion pack for The Sims 3. Surprisngly, The Daily Mail has also reported recent surveys of 43% of women claiming they would rather play on their gadgets than have sex with their partners- yikes! With this recent surge in publicity for female gamers, it poses the question of why has it taken so long for women to be accepted as part of the gaming community? Software entertainment companies owe a lot to the unsung females who purchase their consoles and games. Nintendo can contribute most of the success of the popular Wii console thanks to clever PR marketing towards women offering fun workouts and a new concept of wireless controllers. Online and mobile application games such as Farmville and Angry Birds can also thank their high female demographic for their commercial success.Yet it seems that many girl gamers are still not being accepted as equals to their male counterparts... The reason for this? Openly misogynistic attitudes still hinder the female gaming community Torrie Dorrell, Senior VP for Sony Online Entertainment explains: Women are out there in significant numbers playing MMOs, action games, first-person shooters. What is lacking in the equation are women behind these games. The market for video games is rife with maledesigned games. Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Assasins Creed, Fifa 2012 the list is endless. Female role-models in those games are no credit towards girl gamers either: the eyerollingly sexualised characters that only exist to play damselin-distress to henched hooded superheros. Its enough to make Lara Croft turn in her virtual grave... Then the female marketed games that have previously existed have played safe and cater specifically to the generic family-friendly catergory. Wheres the market for the ladies who prefer their games more hardcore and less Nintendogs? Luckily, there is salvation in the form of a growing niche of female game designers who are set on changing the game plan. Whilst TIGA reports that only 12% of women make up the UK, U.S and Canadian gaming industry, companies such as Guildford-based developers Media Molecule, L.A bred thatgamecompany and indie-led Tiniest Shark are all collective female-design studios that aim to change the stereotyping of girl gamers. Between them, they have created the popular titles Little Big Planet, Uncharted, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Gears of War 3. The games all include complex storylines, strong-lead characters and no topless babes. At last, we are playing alongside the big boys! Mary DeMarle, the co-writer of Deus Ex, speaks highly of the advantages of female designers: We bring an altered perspective, I suppose, a different way of looking at things. And the more women become involved in games, the more that will filter into them. l

Technology was built to help not hinder us, so why has it become a source of our stress? Maddison Barrett investigates.

TECHNOSTRESSED OUT
doing. This endless cycle multiplies stress levels because were never content, always looking for something better to fill that empty abyss in our lives. And so, feeling dissatisfied, we fill it with some slick substitution. It isnt just in the home that we are affected; the majority of technology stress takes place at work. In fact, it is becoming increasingly difficult for our brains to distinguish between work and home because we are forever switched on to alert. With the invention of the smartphone we now get emails, messages, phone calls and social networking notifications delivered simultaneously to one tiny device. Being in this constant contact with our employers means that our time is never really our own. Our technology has sold our souls; its exterior too sparkly sweet for us to even catch on. Enjoying a moment of peace is now almost impossible with the pinging of a demanding phone never far away. It is this inability to disconnect from society that leaves us continually wired up. And whats more, this unhealthy addiction to your phone could be lowering your productivity levels when at work. A study conducted at the University of California discovered that workers took an average of twenty-five minutes to bounce back from phone or email interruptions. So, next time you answer that phone call, consider just how much it might be affecting you. Adversely, for some people technology actually acts as an aid to de-stress. In a recent Virgin Media study commissioned by 1000 Britons, 35% of the UK experience reduced stress levels when connected. These individuals have been defined by experts as SOSOs; those who switch on to switch off. The report claims that people feel anxiety when not connected and as psychologist Nik Simpson says, SOSOs know that, even if they wish to take some time out, the modern world will continue without them. Yet this study only reinforces the truth that we are addicted to Technology and so without it, we become anxious and surely this isnt beneficial? Psychologist Sherrie Carter from High Octane Women says that we are like junkies as we program our dealers (our electronic devices) to immediately alert us to the moment a fix (a message) arrives. So, it seems that someone can be hooked on a phone and laptop in the same way that someone can be hooked on alcohol and drugs. But, unlike drugs and alcohol, society seems to celebrate the perpetual use of technology, making it even harder for technology addicts to shut down devices. Obviously this online fixation is decreasing the amount of face-to-face contact we experience, which raises the question, are we losing our social skills because of the Internet? Now we rarely feel the need to talk to our friends and family when we can just send them a tweet, post on their Facebook wall or send them a quick text message (sometimes even if theyre in the same room as you.) Were told that contacting people this quickly and easily is good, and it is understandable that this could be seen as beneficial to relationships. However, Carter disagrees and argues that technology does more damage than good because too much contact can be suffocating. And you only have to look at Facebook to see how these sites can only worsen situations. Whether we like it or not, technological advancement is actually just becoming another sickening strain on 21st century life. As well as affecting relationships, shockingly all of that techno stuff might actually be affecting your intelligence. In a research study by the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London, researchers found that Workers distracted by e-mail and phone calls suffer a fall in IQ more than twice that found in Marijuana smokers. The leading psychologist called this Infomania and saw it as a serious problem in the workplace. And it doesnt stop there as this addiction could be causing problems for the new generation of children. Neurologist, Jordan Grafman told Time magazine that kids that are instant messaging while doing homework, playing games online and watching TV, I predict, arent going to do well in the long run. The logic being that if someone is continually multi-tasking in everyday activities they may lose the ability to concentrate on one thing, too deeply, for too long and that could certainly be a very big problem, one that isnt going to go away as technology moves forward. Naturally, techno experts have found an answer to our problems, in the form of stress-busting technology designed to make life easier. The new platform of convergence is just one of a plethora of ways to manage and share information in an easier way. TweetDeck, HootSuite and Google + all aim to soften technology use by allowing us to manage our social networking sites, but can fighting technology with technology ever work? For me, a person who has been brought up in the age of technology, it doesnt seem likely. It doesnt mean that someone wont try though. Take the I-phone app Stress Buster for example; it aims to give you a complete overhaul of how you approach the technology in your life. This would be adequate enough, but isnt it slightly hypocritical when the only way you can use the application is through technology, so isnt it just replacing technology with more technology? The cycle is endless. From a psychologists perspective it can all be explained methodically. Respected psychologist William James talked about acquired inattention which is basically the process of becoming immune to what were originally distractions. So theoretically well eventually become adjusted to the demands of technology and well no longer see them as an added weight upon our shoulders, and instead see them as an everyday part of life. Whatever happens, well never stop stressing because its ingrained in our unsatisfied culture. And lets face it, how can we not feel overloaded when adverts are forever being thrust in our faces telling us that we need that new I-phone, that revolutionizing face cream or that high-tech kettle? Whichever way it goes, heres to technology, because amongst the good and the bad theres always the choice to justSwitch off. l

The world has gone technology mad and we are insistent that the latest gadget will bring a shiny silver lining to our discontented lives. But these seemingly innocent products could be causing unnecessary stress, shortening our free time and creating a brand-new generation of technology addicts. So how can we consume this continuous supply of technology without going overboard? In a recent poll, four out of ten of the 3,000 adults polled said that their technology problems were more stressful than any other aspect of their lives, and with most areas of modern life demanding some form of technology use, the answer might be harder than we think. Undeniably, technology brings a plethora of perks to society. Chat applications such as Skype and FaceTime mean that people can talk face-to-face whilst being thousands of miles apart. Then there are the social networking sites such as Twitter and Tumblr that have allowed us to interact with people from all areas of life. All of these things give us a huge amount of opportunity in a society where the word community seems to be fading away fast and if used at all, its most likely a referral to an online community. Online groups can be beneficial to the socially stunted and it does allow confidence to grow, but do we want to sacrifice real social skills and friendship for a conversation behind a screen? Saturated in the stuff, we are unashamedly too reliant on everything that plugs in; our phone battery only has to go dead and were in complete panic. As Linda Stone from the Harvard Business Review says, Were constantly scanning for opportunities and staying on top of contacts, events and activities in an effort to miss nothing. No wonder were so burnt out. Admittedly we no longer have the stress of basic survival. In our sheltered society we dont need to worry about the threat of hungry predators or hunting for the family. However, as weve evolved, our stress has evolved too, into something much more straining than it ever has been before. Maybe this loss of hard labour is actually a bad thing. Consider machines for example, theyve taken away most of the need for strenuous work in the home. No longer do we have to dedicate whole days to washing and we can now make a meal with a press of a button. So, has technology robbed us of our sense of worth? After all, we now have a machine to perform even the simplest tasks, ones that we might be better off just

#Theres always the choice to just switch off.

CALLING ALL WOmEN IN TECH

Where are all the women? Well, of course weve been here all along. Words by Beth Whitmore
Although careers for women in the digital industry have improved considerably from what they once were, its still a slow slog to equality in power, influence and money for men and women. Need proof? Whilst women make up 48% of the UKS workforce, they hold a mere 24% of jobs in science, technology engineering and maths. We must ask ourselves the reason why so few young women are interested in furthering their education in the fields of science and IT, could it be a lack of female role models for young girls to look up to? Well actually, there are a good number of inspirational women in technology, from game designers to influential CTOS, women have been making high-level careers in science and technology for the past decade,. Women such as Gina Bianchini, CEO of well-funded 120m, do-it-yourself social networking site Ning, to Sheryl Sandberg, Facebooks chief operating officer who Fortune named one of the 50 most powerful women in 2007, to Caterina Fake, a serial entrepreneur who co-founded photo-sharing site Flickr and just launched collective-intelligence, decision-making site Hunch. So whats the problem? That, as it turns out, is an incredibly complex issue with a range of reasons: Not enough women get advanced computer science degrees, much less funding goes to women-led start-ups, and some Tech CEOs dont practice gender diversity where the real power residesin top corporate jobs. The good news is us girls have the perfect opportunity to step up the mark and show the world that we are passionate about technology. We need to remind ourselves that Ada Lovelace was the worlds first computer programmer and its certainly possible that the next great Tech legend will be a woman. Now is the time to make it probable.

Id like to think that because you are one of the few women in technology that men would feel that you had chosen to be there.
Meet 3 young women at the start of exciting careers, who love their jobs as much as the technology they work with. Michaela Broscombe is a software Developer at RBS Bank of Scotland, graduating from Bristol with a degree in Engineering in 2010 An average day at work for you consists of... I am in the Markets & International Banking sector of RBS. My team build and maintain a piece of software, which has been named Caprice, that the traders use to manage the risk on their books. I am a developer on what we call the front end of the application and write codes in a programming language called NET. The perks of the job are... I have a rather small team of about 8 people. 5 are in London and we do work closely. 3 are in India and we speak to them on a daily basis. This is one difference I think with working in technology. A lot of development of the development teams are abroad and this means talking to people on a daily basis who you are likely never ever to meet bizarre but also interesting, especially little snippets you learn about their culture I do feel valued as an individual, I have only been in the team for 5 months and I have been tasked with my own projects and bug fixes which will eventually be used by real users. I am still learning off my colleagues and they invest a lot of time in me for which I am very grateful! It can be stressful when... My day can be stressful but in general it is well paced. Im not too busy to be stressed and not not busy enough that I get bored. Stressful days occur when we are close to a release - I am still learning a lot and programming involves a lot of logic - my brain hurts at the end of many of my days but I figure thats a good thing. I love my job because... It is something that interests and challenges me. Its something that I can take to many different industries whether its in an investment bank, an established software firm like miscrosoft or a start up company or simply building my own mobile apps at home. I do just enjoy computing and engineering.

We should encourage young women to take on careers in Tech, Science and IT by... There has been recent talk in the news off introducing programming to IT lessons in school - I would love for this to happen and am very interested to see if this will make girls realise at an earlier age that it is an interesting thing for girls to do and not to rule it out before reaching university. Id like to think that because you are one of the few women in technology that men would feel that you had chosen to be there - and therefore enjoyed/were good at your job. If anything, I think maybe it could be be advantageous - it has been mentioned to me before that it is a shame that there are not more females in technology. It seems as though a grip on technology is the hottest trend in town, with designers and stylists alike jumping on the bandwagon. Rhiannon Derbyshire has a front row ticket for the new it thing - the fashionable gadget.
Fashion week. A duvet, a laptop balancing on my thighs and a piping hot cup of tea served exclusively in my chipped old Cath Kidston mug. Not exactly the scene were painted of the wonderful world of fashion. The truth of the matter is that the act of live streaming catwalk shows around the globe mean that most of the people watching these shows arent dressed head to toe in the designers label. Most, like me - are sat in our house clothes. Were rocking greasy hair, and instead of Louboutins weve slipped into bed socks, which are so stylishly tucked into our pyjama bottoms. If Stylehunter saw us he would be all over it. So much has changed in the wonderful world of fashion. What used to be a painfully exclusive, niche world has been transformed by the advancements in technology and live streaming media. So now, instead of begging for a seat, the lovers of fashion who dont necessarily have the right contacts or jobs can really be there. As long as they have a computer with a decent wi-fi connection, that is. But, as always, the elite fashion industry have taken things to an exclusive level. Chloe, the Parisian design house showed their Autumn/Winter 12 collection for their See by Chloe concession exclusively online. Their previous collections showed at tiny appointments, but this time a password was issued, only allowing a select audience access to their website. Their main collection for Chloe, though will still be showing as a major Paris Fashion week show and therefore balanced in laptops on knees all over the world. President of Chloe, Geoffroy de la Bourdonnaye said we needed to think of new ways to communicate out message. This platform allows us to do that and signals a significant change in the way in which See by Chloe is heading. The idea of online-only shows could prove to be a huge hit, seeing as the average cost of staging a collection during fashion week is around 100,000 - obviously a huge financial strain during this tough economic climate. Not everyone will be jumping on the technological bandwagon though, Henry Holland, who shows his House of Holland collection at London Fashion Week has said that ...the business of fashion is about creating dreams - something which will never be entirely possible in a virtual format. This idea was proven to be true at London Fashion Weeks Burberry Prorsum show. Walking out to encore their latest collection, the sound of splitting clouds and pouring rainfall flooded the room. The sunglassed lovies looked up to the ceiling to find the glass was drizzled with rainfall. Que the models swanning out from backstage with their umbrellas up, being showered by a cloud of confetti. The rain sensation was so real that Clemence Posey and Rosie Huntington-Whitely looked around to figure out how they were going to manage with the rainfall on their perfectly coiffured and blow-dried hair. Just the perfect scene. So classic, so encapsulating of the Burberry brand, trench coats and all. Of course we watched in awe from our laptops, but this will never ever live up to being there, in the room, worried about our dry-clean only coat. Bloggers have also transformed the way in which the fashion industry operates, a few years ago, to see a designers collection youd either have to attend the show, or wait a few weeks for them to be featured in a magazine. Now, the images are instantly uploaded online, and you can read a detailed analysis of the collection within an hour of the designer taking their bow. We also now have countless style blogs of ordinary women uploading pictures of their everyday outfits, inspiring a whole new generation of tech-savvy fashion icons. Karl Lagerfeld hopped right on to the technological bandwagon during the launch of his fusion line at Net-aPorter. To mark the occasion, a Karl Me app was launched. Freem but only available on the iPhone, it allowed the owner to transform themselves into the geriatric German, by simply adding his trademark collar and sunglasses to an image of them. These technological advancements arent just confined in the world of apps and computer screens, the highest levels of technology are being used directly in the fashion world. Katy Perry set the world alight in a LED light-up dress at last years Costume Institute gala in New York. Made by Londonbased company CuteCircuit, Perry helped design the gown alongside creative director Francesca Rosealla. They chose the fabrics, the cut, and even the design of the multicoloured lights, which Perry demonstrated using an on/off switch hidden in her bra. CuteCircuit founders Francesca Rosella and Ryan Genz both hold Masters in Interaction Design, their company combines the technologically advance with the hottest in couture. In 2006 their Hug Shirt (which allows you to send hugs all over the world by programming your heartbeat rate and the warmth of your skin into sensors within the fabric in order to ...recreate the sense of touch, warmth and emotion of the hig to the shirt of a distant loved one.) was named one of the Best Inventions of the Year by Time Magazine. Perrys dress was a more wearable version of the design duos Galaxy dress - a hi-tech gown embroidered with 24,000 tiny LED bulbs, which is now on display in an American museum. The LED bulbs consume only a small amount of electricity, so can be powered by a number of small iPod batteries inside the skirt, with no danger of overheating. The designers use the smallest full-colour LEDs available. These are really flat and measure only 2mm in length. The circuits are extra-thin and flexible and hand-embroidered on to a layer of silk to allow them to stretch. Speaking about her look, the singer said, fashion can be a little stuffy, so I wanted to lighten up. If youre lit up by the idea of wearable technology, youre in luck: the company have just launched a more affordable line, including a minidress that displays a variety of colours and graphics cued by the wearers movements. Prices start from 65. Also, PC world, of all places have commissioned a dress by designer Craig Lawrence, whose previous designs have been worn by Daisy Lowe and Lady Gaga. So far, so weird. Lawrence has created the dress from half a kilometer of cable in order to highlight how much cable is lying around in the average home connected to electrical devices. The frock features the stores Sandstrom cables, and was unveiled last month. Lawrence said, this has been a challenging but enjoyable project to work on...the Sandstrom cables used to create this piece have really given the dress its natural, voluminous, structural form. Its texturised, multi-faceted exterior allows the finished piece to capture light in a way that isnt too dissimilar to the reflective surface of sequins, while the multi-coloured wires encased in the cabling itself have been split up to add colour and depth to the overall dress. Andrea Silver, Currys and PC World marketing director, said: This is a very unique and unusual collaboration for us, and we are incredibly excited about unveiling the finished dress ahead of London Fashion Week. The dress was displayed in the Currys and PC World Tottenham Road store for a week before touring Currys and PC World stores, including Westfield Stratford, Birmingham, Manchester Trafford Centre and Bristol, before being exhibited at Londons Fashion and Textile Museum in August. Havent got a crazy budget? Inspired by Loulou de la falaise, (the model muse for YSLs le smoking tuxedo), Hudsons latest jeans feature phosphorescent tux-style stripes. Sure to cause a scene and (quite literally) grab the spotlight on a night out. Just imagine how much easier itll be to flag down a cab! Available at Selfridges Online from 250. So, with all of this in mind, what does the future hold for the fashion industry? Will we be walking down the street in five years time under the glow of fluorescent LED clobber? Will street lights become obsolete? Or is this another one of those faddy trends, in which well look back in 10 years and wince? At this point in time its difficult to tell, but as always, well have a lot of fun sussing it out. l

IT'S THE HARD BLOG LIFE

For some women blogging isnt just a hobby; its a runway to success, reports Maddison Barrett.
Journalists might ridicule them for not being proper news and others might praise them for giving a voice to the voiceless. Either way, in our technology-fueled society, blogging has become a major topic, especially in the world of fashion. Women have long been labeled gossips but here at StyleByte we believe in a healthy dose of curiosity. Now not only can we see what Lana Del Rey was wearing last week, we can also see the style choices of your everyday woman. Rivaling magazines, fashion blogs deliver a personal voice, style innovation and instant news straight from the grassroots of society. What was at first a hobby can soon open up a world full of sparkling opportunity. Take San Francisco bred Rumi Neely who started her fashion blog Fashion Toast in 2008. Her success landed her a job as a Fashion Assistant and since then her career has exploded. Her website gains well over 35,000 hits a day, she travels the world for modeling campaigns and youre likely to find her at the most coveted fashion shows. London born Susanna Lau of Style Bubble has also had remarkable success in the blogging sphere since she began her fashion-focused blog in 2006. All those years of tapping away at the keyboard paid off and she recently won the award for Best Fashion Insider at the Company 2012 style blogger awards. But what is it thats so attractive about this online world? Neely says the appeal of perpetual fresh content and the power of the ability to connect with so many readers is undeniable. For Lau, blogging shouldnt be a claim to fame, people should blog for the love of it and not have any motives behind it. Then theres Vlogging;YouTube beauty gurus are revolutionising the concept of professional beauty. You only have to look at American sisters Blair and Elle Fowler to see just how far it can go. Elle was just a student when she started up her beauty channel and she now has nearly 707,000 followers. As for nineteen year old Blair, she recently starred in Disneys new teen movie, Prom .The savvy sisters have sky-rocketed to celebrity status through their beauty-based tutorials and have appeared on American breakfast shows, reported at big fashion events and even have their own website that discusses all things fashion, beauty and well, them. Then theres English beauty guru Fleur of YouTube channel Fleur De Force. At only twenty-three years of age, she has over 247,000 dedicated YouTube followers as well as her own website. Its definitely a world where fashion fairytales do come true. Well, if your fairytales consist of free products, beautiful clothes and tickets to amazing events (mine do). Ultimately, blogging creates opportunity like never before. Keep at it and you can become successful without having to be connected. According to recent figures, there are over 156 million public blogs in existence. So fire up your laptops girls, because these bloggers have something to say and you dont want to miss it. l

Samantha Hayes explores the sudden influx in science based cosmetics and asks the question, why the need for change?

BEAUTY GETS A FACELIFT

Cosmetic surgery is beginning to face some tough competition, as there has been a recent change in the beauty industry. Now instead of opting for the rather expensive but regularly deemed easy option to fix your flaws we now have an endless array of home beauty products that claim to achieve the same effects. No longer is a simple routine of moisturiser and make-up acceptable, we are now forced to believe this is not enough, we need our faces filling, sculpting and lifting, our skin filled and refined and our lips plumped to the max, and theyre trying to make it easier for us. Instead of needing Botox or other forms of cosmetic surgery to rid those dreaded wrinkles and facial flaws, there are now multiple drug store products available that claim to achieve what has only previously been created through invasive surgery. But why has beauty suddenly gone hi-tech? The world has gone technology crazy, we obsess over our phones, laptops and the latest gadgets so its only right that every part of our lives are infused with technology, even our beauty products. The beauty industry has heard our cries and is trying desperately to keep up with our techy fuelled world by creating the latest innovative skin products that use the latest in science technology to banish those blemishes and re fill our faces.

One brand which has is leading the way in the techno beauty revolution is LOreal Paris. The Science of Genes is a new project from LOreal; its collaboration between them-a global leader in beauty and skincare and independent scientists to carry out a study of our skins behavior and how it is affected by age. They used their research and a nationwide survey to create brand new ingredients to formulate into their winning products to make a new innovative skincare range, now known as the Youth Code. The geniuses behind the products claim, Whilst working with our team of scientists we have determined when put under stress, certain skin genes linked to epidermal recovery are activated. This activation is knows as gene expression. This helped us identify and develop new care ingredients to improve the efficiency of skins epidermal recovery process. The creams claim to give excessive antiageing ingredients that restore skins youthful elasticity and bring back that healthy glow. So ladies, if you would like your face to look 10 years younger then grab yourself one, available at any high street drug stores LOreal claim Youth Code is an anti-ageing facelift in a bottle, and at around 10-25 it will certainly leave less of a dent in your bank account than choosing the cosmetic surgery option. l

CUT AND pASTE +

Face Lifts, Botox and Tummy Tucks are a thing of the past. With the advances of technology it's not just Collagen on everyone's lips, reports Stacey-Anne Hodgson.
Cosmetic surgery is on everyones mind right now. From the recent Polly Implant Prothse (PIP) breast implant scandal to the growing trend for women to pay for procedures on credit, cosmetic surgery is becoming available to the everyday women, through payment plans and quick, affordable lunchtime fixes. Billions of pounds are spent on cosmetic surgery around the world each year. Ive had Botox used to be the phrase that was whispered into your closest friends ear as a guilty secret, but now celebrities, friends and even work colleagues openly admit it. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), 43,069 procedures were carried out in 2011. However this only refers to those carried out by their members of the association. The overall total outcome in Britain is estimated at 100,000. Today some people are as relaxed about having surgery as they are about buying clothes but when choosing to have cosmetic surgery you need to know what works and what doesnt. From the classic procedures we all know of, to the newest wave of technology innovations; today cosmetic surgery has become commonplace, and its time we all learned about the procedures that are changing our appearance. Major technology advances have made cosmetic surgery better, quicker and more effective. Every year new procedures surface and the newest surgeries are becoming increasingly popular. The extent of what a surgeon can do is forever growing, from rejuvenating your face, slimming your legs, erasing those stretch marks and now even getting rid of your crow hands. At STYLEBYTE we always recommend a good skin routine, however if your one that wants to take it a little bit further and requires a more deep cleanse then the top three surgeries for you are the Clear + Brilliant Skin Enhancement Laser, The Liquid Facelift and Plasma Skin Rejuvenation. Clear + brilliant Skin Enhancement Laser Clear + Brilliant is a gentle laser that refreshes your skin from the inside out. The laser energy creates millions of microscopic treatment zones in your skin, replacing damaged skin with healthy, younger looking tissue. The number of treatments is tailored to your concerns and skin care desires. In recent studies, consumers reported visible improvements after 4-6 treatments. The Liquid Facelift A Liquid Face Lift involves the use of advanced dermal fillers, usually in combination with BOTOX or Dysport. Each of these facial fillers has unique attributes that can be used to rejuvenate specific areas of the face by a highly qualified plastic surgeon or dermatologist. According to the Liquid Facelift Association, In general, dermal fillers replace lost volume in the face or help the body regenerate its own collagen to accomplish any of the following: * Gentle lift of individual (or overall) facial features. * Reduced wrinkles, creases, line or folds. * Restoration of natural, curved facial contours. * A more rested, energetic look. Plasma Skin Rejuvenation Portrait Plasma Skin Rejuvenation is the newest weapon in the battle against wrinkles. Portrait Plasma has been FDA cleared for the fullface treatment of fine to deep wrinkles, superficial skin lesions and pre-cancerous skin growth. It can reduce or eliminate brown spots and wrinkling caused by the sin and repair hyper pigmentation. Instead of employing a light laser, light treatment or injection, Portrait Plasma works by delivering millisecond pulses of nitrogen plasma energy to the skins resurface via a special hand piece that stimulates and produces new collagen, the building blocks for skin regeneration. The hand piece transfers plasma energy onto the skin without any direct contact. This heats up the tissue with no burning. A full-face treatment usually takes less than 45 minutes. Whereas; a regional treatment can be as short as 5 10 minutes. Its energy-transferring mechanism initiates regeneration deep below the skins surface, remodelling the skins architecture to create results that improve over time as the new architecture progressively replaces the old. Invasive surgery can be an intimidating subject; some of us are not brave enough to go under the knife. But now thankfully Scientists have come to our rescue for our unwanted wobbly bits. CoolSculpting is the new liposuction. CoolSculpting This procedure involves freezing fat cells without damaging the skin. There are no knives and no needles. A precisely controlled, FDA-cleared, patented process that simply

targets, cools, and eliminates fat cells without damage to your skin. After one treatment, your body does the rest as the crystallized fat cells break down and are naturally eliminated. Now you have the perfect skin, all unwanted additions of fat to your legs, tummy and arms have vanished. You are just left with the scars of your past. The envy of all. Stretch Marks. We can fix them too, The Harley Medical Group now offer stretch mark and scar removal procedures. Stretch Mark and Scar Removal This new treatment is suitable for most skin types and colours. This Procedure effectively treats the area using fractional laser technology permanently reducing the appearance of the stretch mark or scar. Fractional pulses of laser light breaks down scar tissue to generate new healthy tissue. The result is smoother skin, more even in texture and lighter in colour thus reducing the appearance of the scar or stretch mark. This treatment pioneered in the USA is new to The Harley Medical Group in the UK. The treatment is the first and only fractional laser treatment clinically proven to improve the appearance of stretch marks and scars. This ef-

fective laser treatment has been extensively researched and is the only treatment approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of Stretch Marks and Scars. No matter how smooth and young your face looks, your hands can give your age away. Older hands are characterised by wrinkles, visible veins, prominent joints, thin skin and age spots. As much as we would all want to be as flexible as Madonna. No one wants to take on those hands, now you dont have to. Skin Revitalisation Skin revitalization helps to rehydrate the skin by injecting tiny amounts of hyaluronic acid with an extra fine needle. You can have a skin revitalisation treatment on your face, neck, dcolletage and the backs of your hands. There is no doubt that advances in technology have made the ability for us to be forever young and supple a possibility. However before making a final decision, find out everything you can about the risks and possible outcomes. From all of the team at STYLEBYTE, stay safe.. l

SmOOTH OpERATOR

Here at STYLEBYTE we know that hair removal is just another part of every womans beauty regime, but we all have our little tips and tricks to make the morning easier. So were here to help the laborious task of de-fuzzing run just a bit, well, smoother.

Gillette Venus Vibrance The Pros: For those of us with limited time in the mornings, razors are still the best option. The Vibrance is the first female razor that is battery powered. The battery creates a vibration designed to make your hairs stand up, which combined with the four blade head makes for a very close shave. The results last longer than a standard razor, and it leaves your legs incredibly smooth on the day of use. The Cons: If your grip isnt up there with an Olympic javelin thrower then Id steer clear especially when it comes to those intimate areas. One slip of the hand and the razor doubles the impact, so if you tend to be a little bit shaky and haphazard, Id recommend having a bumper pack of plasters on hand soon after.

Veet Easywax Electrical Roll-On The Pros: Finally waxing at home made simple! This handheld device once charged keeps the wax at the perfect temperature meaning the days of friction burn from self heat strips are long gone. The results are almost flawless and lasted just over a week, without a single burn mark or a sizeable dent in the bank account. The Cons: Like all waxing products and procedures, it is painful, with DIY waxing even more so than at the salon. The only other downside to the device is its ability to time consume. Although the packet says it only takes 20 minutes, be prepared to spend an hour on both legs the first time around, getting used to the application can be a little fiddly.

Braun silk-pil 7 The Pros: This will keep your legs so smooth its no wonder they named it after silk.Youll remain mini-skirt ready for over two weeks. The innovative wet usage capabilities mean that you dont have to section off half a day like with the older models, and it effectively holds its charge for two to three uses. The Silk Epil 7 comes with interchangeable heads for all areas of the body including facial hair, and with the Venus collaboration, incorporating three razor blades on the pivoting head, no hair gets left behind. The Cons: Out of the shower expect tears. With the soothing sensation of warm water, the rotating mini tweezers dont sting too much, in the open air however, you can feel every tug and pull. The smart light on the head, whilst helpful for catching shorter hairs, can prove to be a bit of surprise when you catch the switch accidentally.

FEEL THE VIBE

From iPads to dishwashers technology has revolutionised the way we live and now more than ever its making its way into the bedroom too. In the last decade, men and women have tapped into their love of technology and devices to facilitate more pleasure, reports Stacey-Anne Hodgson.
A recent study by Statistic Brain shows that 44% of women between the ages of 18-60 have used a sex toy. 78% of these women are in relationships, which disproves the stereotype of the frisky single woman.High performance motors, memory capacity and wireless microphones, you name it, its out there built into a cleverly designed toy. If you think vibrators are made in a run down warehouse or even a dingy shed in the back of a middle aged mans garden - you would be wrong. New start up company Revel Body are spending over 500,000 to develop new high performance vibration motors. Code-named the Orb, the device was inspired by the Sonicare toothbrush and is designed to provide more powerful vibration for better stimulation. Founder Robin Elenga said, the goal is to develop a new line of consumer devices based on the motors, which in addition to providing more vibration power also offers 66% less noise than traditional rotary-based motors. Revel body hopes to have their first devices on the market later this year. The development of disguising sex toys has progressed in the past years, from small bullet shaped toys, to vibrators disguised as a lipstick, so you can just pop in into your handbag when your on the go. However the next attempt of concealing your toy has a lot of people questioning the design. The Duet is a discreet vibrator for women that is powered by the USB port in your computer. However, it can also store up to 16GB of data. The device is made from body-safe silicone and metal with dual motors that are virtually silent but provide five power levels. However a sex toy disguised as a USB, great idea, but the thought of pulling it out of your bag in a work meeting to open your presentation while knowing what its been used for. Not quite. Undoubtedly we have all at one time listened or brought music into the bedroom to heighten our senses. But bringing it with you to a club. Well thats up to you. OhMiBod is a sex toy company with the tagline feel the music. They specialise in developing sex toys that combine pleasure and music. Their latest wireless toy to hit the market is the Club Vibe 2.OH. The toy has a velvety finish and vibrates and pulses to club music, concerts or even to your lovers voice. The microphone is built into the wireless remote control. The remote control has a range of 15-20 feet and 5 intensity levels for club (ambient) mode. The remote allows you to switch the vibe from ambient to manual mode and cycle through 5 patterns with a push of a button. While the sex industry is forever expanding there is always room for development. Nothing is being offered to us in 3D (yet), but with advanced electronics, iPod accessories and even toys with memory capacity. This highlights why its so good to live in the 21st century. After all, technology is meant to make us feel good. l

THE TWO FACES OF ONLINE DATING

Even with the good, the bad, and the downright weird publishing an online dating profile, Rachael Woodard explores the dangers of faceless communication and how to find Mr Right.
Youve spent hours coifing your hair into the ultimate up-do, your make-up is understated but gorgeous, the outfit youve spent days agonising over looks perfect. All this can only be for one reason, its date night. But what happens when the butterflies waiting for that handsome man you met at that bar last weekend, turns into anticipation for text to appear on a screen? The use of faceless communication is now higher than ever, and with online dating sites such as Match, E-Harmony and POF requiring little to no official verification of who is signing up; how do you know that who youre communicating with (or worse, starting a relationship with) is who they appear to be? I have been flitting in and out of a variety of dating sites over the past year, never really knowing what I was looking for, and never really putting my heart into it. But 3 months ago saw a messy end to an even messier relationship. With that, the start of a dedicated membership to Plenty of Fish, or POF for short, began.

STAY
I have to enforce that what happened was consensual, but not sensible. I was at no point saying no, but I was neither saying yes. Whether the act was illegal however, is irrelevant to how it made me feel. Waking up to find Liam gone, and when texting received no reply and calls were unanswered I realised that Liams online profile was just a way for him to take advantage of women like myself, looking for relationships, to get his kicks. I was completely appalled. With incidents like this escalating across Britain, caution has to be taken when communicating online. Gemma Barker was jailed for two and a half years earlier this month for adopting a false identity as a man, and using it to sexually assault two girls between the ages of 15 and 16. Barker spent hours as her female self befriending one of her victims Jessica Sayers, then used the information to create online profiles on social networks as her alter ego Aaron Lampard, to attempt to start a relationship with her. This is just another story in a string of concerns about the safety of online communications, but being aware and sensible is the key to staying safe when it comes to meeting someone online. The majority of the time, the worst that will happen will be your date turning up with a ventriloquist dummy. Events like these are rare, and dont be put off. The good does often out weigh the bad, especially when you approach with caution.

1 New Message
Liam* was the first man I messaged. His profile led me to believe he was honest, intelligent and funny. His pictures showed his style and his wayfarer glasses were quirky enough to make him stand out from the crowd. When his Looking For said he wanted a relationship, I was happy as can be. Conversation flowed, once the awkward icebreaker on my part was swiftly overlooked, and after a few emails we swapped details. A week later our texts and calls were becoming increasingly intimate, sharing details about our pasts and our ambitions, which I never thought I could tell anyone about. But looking back, maybe it was easier to share because I didnt have to see a reaction. Sending a text worded exactly how you want it to sound, is very different to bearing your soul to someone you love. One week rolled into two, then three, and my suspicion for why Liam never wanted to meet me was growing. The only time it was ever suggested was when he knew I was going out for the evening, to see if I wanted picking up. Thinking it was simply a sweet gesture, I never thought to question his motives.

l Meet away from your homes. Giving someone youve never met permission to enter your house is asking for trouble. Meet somewhere public, with a simple and safe route home. l Always let someone know where you are going and who you are meeting. Even precautions like giving a friend the name and number of your date, makes you feel a lot safer. l Leave if you feel uncomfortable. Agreeing to go on a date does not mean putting yourself in danger, organise a time for a friend to call as an excuse to leave if necessary. l Make sure you know where you are going. A walk in the country may sound romantic, but knowing where you are is important. l Trust your instincts. If something doesnt feel right it probably isnt. Dont stand by your manners, and speak up. l Dont get drunk. Your inhabitations may disappear, but so will your judgement. Even if your date isnt a threat, nobody wants to spend their first date putting their drunken company into a cab at 9pm.

About Me
Writing my profile was odd, having only put together a CV or a Facebook page to describe myself, coming up with a four line minimum to try and make someone fall in love with me, was to say the least, difficult. Rallying family and friends to come up with at least one quality or habit of mine led to a ray of light. You always cry at that bloody Florence and the Machine song from holiday, was a reply from an old travelling companion. My best friend from high school got in touch saying You moan about how people get fashion and clothes confused. She was right, so that went in too. My Mothers reply was the best Youre stubborn as hell, was rephrased to When I decide I want something, no one is going to change my mind. All of these titbits joined my brief description, along with how I take my tea. Within minutes my inbox was overflowing with messages, anything from poems, to a simple hello. My first day online led to three hours replying to monotonous, bland and quite obviously copied-and-pasted emails. I soon picked up that being cut throat was part and parcel of how to survive the online dating community and when all the profiles that caught my eye werent messaging me, I also learnt that making the first move was perfectly acceptable.

That was until one fateful Friday night. Having been out for a friends birthday, the drinks had been flowing a little too heavily. Making our way home, I made the ill-informed decision to call Liam. My feelings of neglect came gushing down the telephone. Amazingly a few beverages turned a sensible, sophisticated woman into a drivelling fool. Thinking my stuttering way with words had persuaded my white knight to come and rescue me from my ensuing drunken slumber, Liam set off from his house. When he turned up I was slumped in the bathroom in a state of undress, awoken by a bang at the front door, I stumbled to answer it remembering I had invited Liam over, I was slightly confused by who I was faced with. This definitely wasnt who I had pictured. Shorter than his profile stated and definitely not as handsome or even of the build his pictures portrayed. In my drunken haze I failed to articulate these concerns and before I knew it Liam was inside the door and kissing me. A sober, intelligent me would have been saying no, but the intoxicated, idiotic me let this stranger carry on.

My Matches
I nearly never met Daniel*. We had briefly emailed and texted towards the end of my involvement with Liam, and my experience had shaken me badly. On our second date he told me he had nearly given up hope on ever getting me out on a date, considering I had cancelled twice before. But turning up for dinner in South London to find a handsome man who was attentive and gentlemanly made me question giving up hope on POF. He was even better than his profile let on, I was crying with laughter after about 5 minutes, and hearing about his work and hobbies made our compatibility soar sky high. Just over a month down the line, and a fair few dates under our belt, Daniel and I are heading towards a future that doesnt depend on seedy alcohol fuelled encounters. I still keep an eye on POF, you never know what fish might be swimming around. But for the moment, Im happy with my haul. l

WII FIT
How the console is leaving homeowners with a 20millon bill
As the worlds bestselling games console, the Wii Fit has helped to revolutionise the way we work out. Leaving behind those 6am runs in the freezing cold and the need to purchase the latest gym clothes in order to keep up with that uber-fit gym-bunny you always seem to land next to on the treadmill, Nintendos console allows you to balance, hula-hoop and Zumba your way to a better body from the comfort of your lounge - and your oldest sweat pants. And with such impressive USPs theres little wonder sales have surpassed 30 million units in Europe alone, since the consoles 2008 launch. But whilst it may be doing wonders for our figures, the vigorous exercises are wreaking havoc with our homes as plant pots, vases and even the TV sets are sent flying amid a flurry of high-kicks and Latin inspired dance moves. According to a recent survey* over 20 million pounds worth of damage is done to homes each year, as a result of our over vigorous exercising; now thats an awful lot of smashed vases. With nearly a fifth of Wii Fit owners admitting to having an accident whilst working out at home, and a shocking two percent saying they have inadvertently sent the remote itself flying into the TV during a mid-workout frenzy, it would be all too easy to give up on home exercise and enroll yourself back at the gym. But here at Stylebyte we think a couple of smashed plant-pots is a small price to pay for the chance to exercise and shape-up in the comfort of your own lounge, and really who can blame you for getting a tad over excited - but please, do at least try and move your laptop out of harms way. l *2011 survey conducted by UK insurance company Sheilas Wheels.

Ever wondered what your home will look like 10 years from now? Samantha Hayes takes a look into the new innovations in technology that may change our homes forever.

HOmE OF THE FUTURE

With constant advances in technology the way we live is ever changing and its only about to get even more hitech. The world has gone technology crazy and our homes are next on the rejuvenation list, in the next 10 years our homes are set to have a major face-lift.Your mirrors will become interactive, the beds are magnetic, your house can only be opened with the latest finger print technology and when youre finished with dinner your dining table and chairs fold themselves away. Do you like the sound of these products? Well you may as well familiarise yourself with them as the foreseeable future sees every household evolving into a hitech emporium. The emergence of these new products have sparked desires for people to catch a glimpse of what their homes may end up looking like. Last month Channel 4 decided to try and give us a little insight by creating a documentary called Home of the future, in which a modern Sheffield families home was transformed into a blueprint of what our homes will one day look like. Filling their humble abode with futuristic technology and cutting edge gadgets, the series aimed to look at the effects of a modern family adjusting to life in a multi-generational household. The five part series sees a normal Yorkshire family exploring how we may work, rest, eat, travel, stay healthy and power our futuristic homes, and makes for a very intriguing watch. Chris Sanderson was the expert overseeing the experiment, a co-founder of a consultancy called The Future Laboratory he described how I spend my time hypothesizing about the future so it was fascinating to test it with a modern family, to see how quickly they adjust and how different generations adapt to the new technologies But Channel 4 is not the first to do this, in 1991 architects Frank Belien and Peter Bongers created Living Tomorrow. A technology filled showroom open to the public representing and displaying all the latest gadgets in a futuristic style home layout. Their mission was to create a platform on which several companies could display their ideas and test their products on the modern public. If the visitors deemed the products popular then they were commissioned and sent into production. One of the biggest changes and most eagerly awaited advances is home security. Long gone will be the dilemmas of misplacing your house keys and those dreaded burglaries, with state of the art CCTV and the new Bio

Locks. These innovative finger print security systems are specifically catered to each home and those who live there. It has a state of the art finger print scanner, which also reads your pulse rate. The creators of Biometrics describe their products as innovative and an extremely smart finger print recognition system, the Biometric security device takes users finger print ridge patterns and pulse rate to create a binory number that represents certain points in the pattern, one if the most radical aspects of the device is the pulse rate monitor, as grim as it sounds this means that if a burglar chopped your thumb of to gain entry to your home it wouldnt work. So ditch those endless collections of useless keys and tacky key rings, all you need is a beating heart and your trusty fingerprint. Now lets take a look inside the home, every detail is getting a techno makeover, even those little accessories and appliances that you may not have expected. Designer by James Law has created the Cybertecture Mirror; this is a brand new state of the art interactive mirror. Set to be a must have in every single futuristic gadget ridden home, the Cybertecture is designed to perfection, waterproof, wire less and controlled by a remote, your smartphone or laptop. Whilst brushing your teeth your new mirror will allow you to send e-mails, listen to music, watch TV, check the weather and even have a quick nosey at your Facebook account all whilst getting ready in the morning and throughout the day. The mirror is seamlessly connected with the Internet via wireless communications, and can be customised to every day present you with your typical morning functions. Each user can create an account using a computer or laptop, they can set preferences and programmes of what they would like their interactive mirror to do every morning. Each account can be set with a password so every family member can log on to his or her own mirror experience. According to the makers Cybertecture Mirror interacts with users by delivering useful information as well as monitoring your health via its peripheral sensor pad and communicates with your computer and mobile phone to enhance your daily life, whilst remaining as an everyday reflective mirror. So would you want this exciting and very intriguing appliance built into your home? But lets not ignore the most important room in every house, the Kitchen. For your brand new exciting kitchen there is the Ashley Legg Smart Fridge, the concept is simple,

a fridge that is intelligent enough to come up with a recipe for you based upon what ingredients you have left inside. At the touch of a button you can get your Smart Fridge to vocalise the cooking instructions to you so you can easily listen whilst starting to whip up the recipe. But thats not all, to add to its amazingness using an electro-chromic window and a touch sensor you can transform your standard opaque fridge door into a transparent window, allowing you an easy glimpse of all the goodies inside. The perfect lazy ladies way to check if there is any chocolate or wine left. Another new future creation to help modernise our homes is the Home Automation System. These will be fitted in every single home as they act as the control panel for all your technology. Its an intelligent touchscreen system, which can control anything in your household from the lights, TV, heating to security and appliances. The main aim of the Automation Systems like most of these products we are going to be seeing more regularly in the future, aim to make life easier, safer and more simple.Your Home Automation system can turn all lights off around the house, open or close remote controlled blinds, sets timers to control kitchen or bathroom appliances and gives you access to the built in CCTV that is placed around your home. The system can also easily access the internet to order shopping or add items to your already

existing shopping list and can turn all televisions and computers off from any of the automation panels. You can control every part of your home from one simple touchscreen square, perfect right? I think out of all the technologies that are predicted to be popular this one makes the most sense, I think this is the one device that everyone will want and will deem necessary because of its endless capabilities. Its also a great invention to help bring down those energy bills and soften your carbon footprint, as with one press of your finger all lights and electronics can be turned off for the night, no more walking in from work ad realising your TV has been left on standby all day. The idea of this new modern and futuristic home is all about making your household efficient and more comfortable to live in, and I think this will definitely be positively warmed into the homes of the world. So whether youre a busy bachelorette with a love for the latest luxuries, or a housewife with five children to look after, we will all soon be united. Joined together by our homes. Our new, eco friendly, technology filled efficient homes, where keys dont exist, touchscreen is the only kind of screen available and well finally be able to look in the mirror and enjoy our morning routines. All hail the technology revolution. l

WEIRD AND WONDERFUL

WTF?!

OF THE mONTH
Whilst we love advancements in technology, one or two oddities had us raising our eyebrows, saying What is the POINT of that?!. Whilst its true that most good ideas start off as ridiculous pipe-dreams, we cant really see these particular things setting the world on fire. Here are our favourites...
Chubby Cheek Checker This is the facial lift At once toner, which, when worn give you lips Pete Burns would die for. Its inventors claim that popping this, erm contraption over your lips and moving your mouth around helps tone your face. All you do is put on the mouth cover, pop it in your mouth and it does the hard work for you!, the website exclaim.. So, simply move your mouth around to tone your chubby cheeks. The lip movements ironically reminds us of the chewing movement when eating a particularly large sandwich, and wed much rather do that if were honest. Were not convinced, but if you are you can buy them at www.japantrendshop.com, a snip at just 53 The Cupcake Cashpoint LA-based bakery Sprinkles cupcakes have launched an ATMstyle machine, but instead of dispensing cash it dolls out cupcakes. The company promises that the ATM will be continuously restocked throughout the day and night with a choice of eight cupcake flavours at any one time, priced at $4 each. Yes, an excellent, delicious idea. But deadly - this would mean you can indulge on you favourite sweet treat 24 hours a day! We can only imagine the carnage at 4am when all the kebab shops have snaked queues and you just really fancy some icing (www.sprinkles.com) The Solar Powered Bikini How many times have you been soaking up the sun on a tropical beach only to have your vibe instantly killed by an ipod thats run out of juice? Not a problem with this handy Solar Bikini. It uses photovoltaic fillm strips and a 5-volt regulator to manage the electrical output. Apparently the designer, Andrew Schneider is working on a male version called the iDrink that will produce enough power to cool down a beer. Unfoturtunately, neither of these are available to buy as of yet.
