Sports Development and Co-ordination Definition/purpose How is sport developed in the UK?

? How do national organizations, like Sport England, co ordinate and develop sport? How do local councils, like BANES, encourage the development of sport in their local area? Sports development is a form of social intervention comprising sets of principles processes and practise that seek to provide opportunities designed to motivate and encourage people to take part in sport and physical activity at all levels of ability and through all stages of life cycle for a variety of personal and societal rationales. National governing bodys such as Sport England and UK Sport aim to help young people in the UK , to influence them to participate in a health lifestyle by taking part in sports projects , managed by national governing bodys. They also help promote local community sports clubs, so members of the public can join their team. For example, Playground to Podium which is managed by Sport England, this is a dedicated initiative designed to identify and nurture disabled young people and disabled adults with the potential to be elite athletes. The scheme focuses on six sports: Athletics, Boccia, Football, Swimming, Table tennis, Wheelchair basketball. The project aim to target: 3,600 teachers to be trained to recognise potential talent in young disabled people. 22,500 young disabled people will receive quality coaching in partnership clubs. 13,500 young disabled people will be recognised as having higher ability in physical education or sport. Assessment and further development will be provided to 8,500 talented young disabled people. 2,000 adults with a disability will be introduced to high quality coaching in a community setting. 5,000 disabled athletes and players will be directed to appropriate high quality coaching opportunities in performance environments.

More talented performers will move onto elite programmes and sporting success. Local citys like bath like to encourage people in the community to take part in their projects which will boost their confidence sports activities and have a better lifestyle. These projects are based around the area, these can be projects like, summer camps (health and fitness related) and sport days (try out different sports), plus there are many more projects referring to sports development which they can participate in.

Scale/Size: Sports developments have a range of agencies worldwide, such as international, national and community placed. International: UK Sport International National: Sport England Community: BANES (Bath and North East Somerset) All of these have a reasonably big impact on the whole world, as if it wasnt for these agencies sports development schemes wouldnt able to take place meaning young children wouldnt have many hobbies. Target groups Who do these organizations, focus their initiatives on and why? Are they looking to focus on a specific group of society or do they have a broader aim? These types of national governing bodies, target audiences such as young children, enthusiastic athletes and disabled athletes, the national governing bodies will give these people that support they need to raise their abilitys, confidence . But certain projects such as playground podium are targeting young disabled people, who they can help (coach) them to become elite athletes. They can find these young athletes by their partnerships with schools. Overall, all national governing bodies are aiming to target those specific audiences and by doing that they could make those certain peoples lifestyle change for a brighter future. Services offered and functions performed How do these bodies encourage the development of sport? How do they allocate resources and what do clubs or communities have to do to qualify? The national governing bodies encourage sport development by presenting these events/projects to schools and local communitys through-out the nation. Specific example I can use is athletics northern Ireland , they create a variety of event which are relating to sports development, they are , Aviva Star: Track / Sports hall / Elevating Athletics, 30,40,50 Club / 30,40 50 League,ANI Junior Cross Country Squad,ANI Fundamental Programme through Athletic Networks, Rising Stars, Youth Academy By doing this it helps the young people develop new skills and improve their development stage by stage. They would like to put their point across to young sports people that they can achieve greater thing in lives and by using these events/projects they could earn money which can be spent on new facilities for schools and for the local community. They decide to build their facilities in schools and communitys as it has the biggest impact on the young people, its placed there because it will get used recently; its not a waste of money. Impact on the local community? How has sport development changed in the local city? The sports development industry has made a big impact on young sport participators; the reason why it has a huge impact is because it has offered many services to the young people of the community. Facilities for the public to use can be, sport leisure centres and sport grounds/parks, this

gives them a place to go in their leisure time, to enjoy their self and also improve on their own abilities. For schools the they can provide new equipment such as sport balls , apparatus , sports halls , swimming pools etc. this gets children involved in sport letting them know they have a wide range of facilities and sports to offer. For bath, all young sports people also have local sports development establishments, for example there is a brand new! Sports court which has been opened in bath (whiteway), also Culverhay sport centre, both of these local facilities is developed by the BANES council. If it wasnt for BANES spending money on all of these local residences, no one in the local community would be able practice or take part in sport, during their free-time. It gives the public something to do. Examples: Chosen Initiative: Playground Podium What is the goal of the initiative? To locate young children and adults which are disabled athletes, which have the potential to be an elite athlete. The initial focus is on disabled young people with an additional pathway being designed for all disabled athletes to be given equal opportunities to nurture higher ability. Who is it focused on? Young children and adults which are interested in being an elite disabled athlete. They also want to focus on 3,600 teachers to be trained to recognise potential talent in young disabled people. Where and when will it take place? In the past, the 2011 event took place at Oxford University Sports Complex, Iffley Road, Oxford on Thursday 7th July for Swimming and Wednesday 13th July for dryside sports. And also on the 13th May 2011 over 60 young disabled athletes attended the Devon Playground to Podium event. How successful has it been? For a specific event such as the Devon playground podium, that particular event had 60 young disabled participators and attracted 120 young athletes. So for that many young athletes to attend that event, it must be quite successful across the UK. Are there any plans to develop this initiative further? The big obstacle to future success in Paralympic sport is the strength of grassroots involvement and the number of people playing sport at community level. Deloitte Parasport was created to provide a clearer pathway towards elite sport for those people with ambitions of representing Britain at a Paralympic Games. Parasport (a national governing body) is now building a larger community of active participants in disability sport across all disciplines and through this will provide an important pipeline to find the next generation of Paralympians.
