Message from our Vice-Chancellor

Prof. Bijendra Jain, Ph.D.

Deemed to be university, established under section 3 of UGC act 1956. Accredited with an A Grade by NAAC, the institute has been consistently ranked amongst the top 10 engineering institutes in the country and as the best private engineering institute by leading magazines and newspapers. Needless to say, this has not happened accidentally. Right from its inception, BITS Pilani has had a world class curriculum for its UG and PG programmes, with emphasis on developing analytical skills as also on hands- on laboratory-based experimentation and project-oriented work. BITS Pilani, with the help of MIT, was the first in India to introduce a semester based credit- based system with continuous evaluation. Admissions to UG and PG programmes at BITS Pilani are based solely on merit as determined by nation-wide on-line tests conducted by BITS Pilani. Once students undergo rigorous training, both inside

the classrooms and laboratories as well as outside, they are adequately equipped to design, develop and market products and services for the discerning consumers in India or abroad as also take on leaderships roles in later years in their careers. I would like to invite design, manufacturing and service organisation in India or abroad to visit are campuses at Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai and explore employment/placement opportunities with our students graduating in the year 2012.

History

Our flagship campus at Pilani (Rajasthan) was set up in technical collaboration with MIT (USA), under the Ford Foundation Grant and later was deemed to be a university in 1964. Over time, our footprint has spread across the nation and abroad with the opening of sister campuses at Dubai, Goa and Hyderabad. We have been accredited with the

highest grade A by the NAAC and received a combined score between all our campuses of 3.71 out of 4. Outlook Magazine has ranked us the best private engineering university and the 8th best overall. The magazine also ranked us no. 1 in terms of personality development, Industry interface and Infrastructure.

Alumni Network

The truest worth of an institute can only be gauged by the success of its alumni. On this front, our students have made us proud time and again. From top corporate executives to successful entrepreneurs, from leading researchers to renowned faculty, and leaders of Industry to leaders of the nation, our alumni have made truly remarkable

achievements in a diverse range of fields. Our vast alumni network helps us in bringing a reallife perspective to students by interacting with them regularly through meets arranged by the Alumni association, coaching and mentoring students to prepare themselves for real world challenges in industry and beyond.

04

It made your thinking very diverse. It taught you how to deal with adversity. Of course, it gave you a very great education.

In my case, absolutely at every important step BITS has been there, without that I could not have had the success I have today.

The experience at BITS Pilani was extremely helpful. Particularly, the solid grounding in technology formed the basis of my success through the years.

Meeting diverse students from virtually every Indian state had a huge impact on my inter-personal skills. Something I appreciate till date, more so on a global level now.

This (BITS experience) was unique and prepared me to face the world, to work hard and gave me certain values which I cherish even today.

Transparent Intake Process

The pursuit of excellence requires a transparent and honest approach

The pursuit of excellence requires a transparent and honest approach. At BITS Pilani, we have always believed this to be true and are one of the few top institutes in India to favour a Merit Only based admission policy. To ensure complete transparency in student intake in the undergraduate courses we have instituted BITSAT, a fully online exam. BITSAT tests students on their aptitude for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. BITSAT also has a section on English and

Logical reasoning, thus becoming a complete analysis of a candidates intelligence and capability. About one hundred and twenty thousand students from across India write BITSAT every year and the numbers have been rising rapidly. To further narrow the field and find students with a true academic bent of mind, we have additional requirements from students such as a minimum 80% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and 60% score in English, in their senior secondary board exams.

Admissions to higher degree programmes are also conducted via online exams followed by a series of interviews of shortlisted candidates. In some form or the other, our merit based policy has always been a part of our ethos and is one of the key reasons behind the drive for excellence and competitive spirit that marks all our students and alumni.

Education and Curriculum

BITS Pilani has always stood for the best in education and pedagogy. We design our courses to promote deep understanding and learning of concepts and our curriculum is constantly evolving, keeping in sync with global research. The following are some of the key components of curriculum at our campuses.

Our courses are designed to help promote overall learning of concepts

Academic Life
The programme structures for all our disciplines have been designed to challenge the brightest minds. Each academic year is divided into 2 semesters, with the following outline:

Degree Programs
We offer educational degrees at First Degree (Undergraduate), Higher Degree (Graduate) and Doctoral Levels. At the first degree level, we offer B.E (Hons), B. Pharm. (Hons.), M.Sc. (Hons.), and M. Sc. (Tech) degrees. At the Higher Degree level, we offer M.E., M.Pharm, MBA and MPH Programmes.

Dual Degree
Under this programme structure, students work concurrently towards earning 2 degrees within a set time frame. Students undertaking dual degrees, complete all the compulsory classes for both the degrees that they are enrolled in. The dual degree course is one of the most popular options from amongst the various flexibilities offered under our curriculum.

Thesis Programme
In lieu of the Practice School, students can also opt for the Thesis Programme (Dissertation for higher degree). Under this programme, students choose a topic of research and a supervisor in line with their preferences and research goals. At the end of the semester students present their thesis work to a panel of faculty. The thesis programme is an integral part of our academic structure and gives students a chance to understand the challenges of working in a research setting.

Note: 1)Admission to all first degrees is after 10+2 through BITSAT 2)All first degrees typically take 4-years to complete 3)Admissions to higher degrees is after the student has completed a first degree (undergraduate degree)

Semester 02

Students are introduced to a wide range of common courses that set the foundation for the more branch-intensive courses to come. The end of the year sees students take a long summer break of two and a half months that they may utilise by taking up independent internships or NGO work.

This year brings with it a diversification in terms of courses. Students are exposed to extensive courses in their branch of study. Laboratory courses are introduced to ensure that students can find a practical link between what is taught in the classroom and its real-world applications. At the end of the year, students have the option of joining the 2 months Practice School Programme which provides them their first real-life exposure to corporate or industrial environment.

The third year is academically the most concentrated & rigorous. Students are taught their Compulsory Disciplinary Courses which go in depth and explore the finer points of the branch of their choice. Laboratory courses are more intensive than ever with numerous evaluative components to complement lecture classes. Projects and design assignments test the application skills of each student.

Semester 02

The first semester of the fourth year sees half the students working off campus for the second phase of Practice School, while the other half of students remain on campus and take a number of elective courses. With the flexibility of taking courses from across branches, these courses allow students to explore their interests. During the second semester this half goes out to complete their PS 2 while the first half comes back to campus to complete their degree.

Campus Life

Enriching Campus Life An enriching campus life for students has always been our major focus

Providing an enriching campus life for students has always been our major focus. Numerous activity and hobby clubs are active in all our campuses. Run completely by the students, the clubs are purely talent and interest based. Recruitments for clubs are conducted at the beginning of each semester. In addition to the clubs, a number of departments are responsible for the functioning of the various festivals

that are organised by the different campuses. Different departments work in concert for the successful execution of the festivals. Students are completely responsible for the functioning of the departments, and thus, of the festivals. It is a great exercise in working in groups and exposes students to a completely different aspect of problem solving from the one that they learn in the regular course of academics.

Practice School

10

Practice School programme is our link to industry that helps students discover and overcome real-life challenges

Imparting relevant real-life skills to students has always been one of the key focus points of our educational policy. In addition to sponsored projects and collaborative research, our unique Practice School programme is our link to industry that helps students discover the real challenges of working in the field. The Practice School Programme provides students the unique opportunity to undergo seven and a half months (spread across two phases of two months

and five and a half months) of intensive, on the job training. This programme has been enthusiastically supported by industry. Our students undergo the Practice School Programme in over two hundred companies in India and abroad cutting across sectors. The academic structure, intensity & rigour of the Practice School Programme makes our students stand apart from the crowd. Companies that come to recruit from BITS Pilani, find trained professionals & leaders ready to take on work challenges.

Process Driven Placement System

Most of our students have their career paths charted much before graduation

The placement scenario at all our campuses has always been extremely positive. Most of our students have their career paths charted much before graduation. Almost 500 students from the Pilani campus, 300 from K K Birla Goa Campus and 300 from the Hyderabad campus are available for placements every semester. Almost 100% succeed in securing a job of their choice. Over 160 reputed companies visited our campuses in the previous placement season 2010 -2011, a number of whom were repeat visitors.

Over time, our placement process has been refined to make recruitment as simple as possible for students and companies alike. Some of the key features are: No registration charges Rooms with LCD projectors and computers are provided for conducting pre-placement talks Rooms for aptitude tests, group discussions and interviews are also made available A team of dedicated placement committee volunteers work to ensure simpler logistics and all other related issues regarding campus placements.

Two Phased Placement Season

A distinguishing factor in our placement season is the fact that it occurs in 2 separate phases. This is because of the Practice School Programme in the final year due to which only half of the final year students may be present in campus at a given point of time. The phases are illustrated in the subsequent pages.
